For Kapitaen zur See and Fuehrer der U-boote Karl Doenitz the outbreak of war between Germany and the United Kingdom in September 1939 found the submarine arm of the Kriegsmarine unready for conflict. Nevertheless, Doenitz’s ‘Grey Wolves’ were still able to inflict substantial losses on vessels carrying Britain’s lifeblood. The conflict widened after the occupation of France and its ports gave the submarines direct access to the Atlantic shipping lanes, which in turn led later to a larger arena. This program depicts the course of the U-boat war in its initial phase in vivid images captured primarily by German cameramen with much being presented to the viewer for the first time.

During WW2, the need for capable and qualified crewmen to work with and maintain the equipment became vital. In order to keep up with the demands of warfare, soldiers and engineers were educated partly with training films. This programme shows footage of the Tiger tanks during Operation Citadel, as well as edited highlights of two German Army training films from late 1943 and mid 1944. Including two major military productions, the first of these films was produced to show how to convert the Panther tank, allowing it to successfully deal with the extensive Soviet defences like those it encountered at its debut in Kursk. The second film from 1944, made for the benefit of personnel serving in Sdkfz 251 D’s and the Panzerjaeger IV, may well be the only footage of this type to survive the war. Finally there are sequences showing such machines as the late Model Brummbaer which round off this fascinating assemblage of unique footage of German armoured fighting vehicles from the latter part of WW2.

It is one of the enduring myths of the Second World War, that the German ‘Blitzkrieg’ victories of the early years of the conflict were achieved by their employment of a numerically and technologically superior tank force. In reality, the defeat of Poland and France, Yugoslavia and Greece and the remarkable victories in the opening stages of the Russian campaign and in North Africa, were wrought by German tank divisions equipped, in the main, with light tanks. The Panzer I weighed less than six tons, and was armed with two machine guns and armour barely able to withstand the impact of such weapons itself. It was with these light-weight workhorses, rather than their heavier and more glamorous stable mates, that the Blitzkrieg legend was forged.

There can be few people who have never heard of the Tiger Tank - indeed, it has come to be seen as one of the most potent symbols of German military power in the Second World War. First committed to combat on the Eastern front 1942, the Tiger and its more formidable successor - the Tiger II, ‘Kingtiger’ - had, by the time of the defeat of Nazi Germany, generated an awesome reputation that far belied the very small production run of fewer than the 2000 built. The history of this legendary tank is told with particular emphasis placed on combat footage of the Tiger in action, as well as footage of the Ferdinand/Elefant on the Eastern front and the Sturmtiger in action in the Warsaw Uprising of 1944.

The Green Devils were the ‘fallschirmjaeger’ (paratrooper) arm of the Luftwaffe and were to see extensive service in both air-dropped and ground roles, through to the war’s end in 1945. However, by 1942, fated by Hitler’s judgement that the days of large paratrooper operations had already passed, the Green Devils were to see out the rest of the war serving primarily as elite ground troops. This programme shows their operations in North Africa through to East Prussia and the borders of Germany in 1944-45, as well as in the theatres of Italy and Normandy. It also includes operations by paratroopers in the East where they are seen taking on Soviet T-34s using Panzerschreck anti-tank weapons and on the borders of Germany in the opening months of 1945.

First seeing action during ‘Operation Weseruburg’ - the invasion of Denmark and Norway in April, 1940 - the Green Devils were the ‘fallschirmjaeger’ (paratrooper) arm of the Luftwaffe and were to see extensive service in both air-drop and ground roles, through to the war’s end in 1945. The first paratrooper unit was raised in 1935 following the profound impression made upon the Germans by the early experiments with this new form of warfare conducted by the Soviets. This programme deals with the evolution of the paratrooper arm, and goes into depth about their important role in the invasion of the west in 1940. It also offers extensive coverage of the victorious operation that will remain forever linked with the fallschirmjaeger ‘Operation Merkur’ - the invasion of Crete in 1941.

For the day fighters of the Luftwaffe, the dominant reality in the period 1943-1945 was the massive growth in the daylight bombing raids of Germany by the United States. While other theatres did have a call on the fighter wings, by far and away the bulk of German day fighters in this period was employed in the air defence of Germany. The core of the day fighter units continued to be built around later variants of the Bf-109 and the Fw-190, which were being continually modified and upgraded with new armament combinations and employing new tactics to force down the U.S. heavy bombers. The reality of the air-war over Germany is demonstrated in this programme, illustrating the battles fought by the Luftwaffe day fighter squadrons in their attempts to frustrate ever growing U.S. and allied bomber raids.

The German Luftwaffe entered World War II in September 1939, employing as its main day fighter the Messerschmitt Bf-109, one of the classic fighter aircraft designs of all time. When war broke out, it was already riding high on a reputation derived from its successful blooding in the Spanish Civil War. 1941 saw the introduction of the Focke Wolf Fw-190 over the English Channel. Its superiority over the Spitfire Mk. V saw it rapidly become the Luftwaffe fighter arm’s ‘second iron’ and was to play a major role in the widening conflict from 1941 onwards. This programme covers the operations of the Bf-109 in its role on all fronts, to 1942 and the early missions by the Fw-190 over France and the English Channel.

Alexander the Great forged an empire covering most of the then known world, defeating innumerable enemies and stamping forever his military genius on the annals of history. Yet even a man of his outstanding ability could not deal with one of Mother Nature’s most potent weapons - heat, and under a blistering Indian sun Alexander exhausted his men, his mission and came to the turning point of his career. Clad in heavy armour and chainmail suits, the Crusaders of the 11th and 12th centuries were hardly dressed for the burning heat of the desert sun, and sure enough many soon succumbed to the twin devils of de- hydration and disease. Thousands of men and horses were lost to relentless thirst and the effects of malaria, dysentery and sandfly fever. Hundreds of years later World War Two saw the armies of Rommel and Montgomery clash in the searing heat of North Africa. It was to be one of the most crucial theatres of war, and one of the harshest as every move was prey to the vagaries of the weather. Sandstorms rendered tanks and trucks inoperable and there was never enough water for troops to drink, let alone enough to keep red-hot machinery cool.
