On 20th June 1914 the assassination of the heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire at Sarajevo set the stage for the global conflict diplomats and dynasties alike had said would never happen. But the holocaust that followed was all too real. Within weeks of Archduke Ferdinand’s death, Europe was mobilising to fight the war to end all wars - a war that would leave nine million dead and change the face of the globe. The tinder suspicion, smouldering for decades, was fanned into violent life by German ambition: the union of 35 states forged in the 1870 Franco-Prussian war was ready to test its strength, and three decades of covert construction saw them in a position to enter the superpower stage on more than equal terms. On August 1914, the German s rampaged through neutral Belgium, but lost their momentum: in the Flanders fields, Howitzers carved out a blighted wasteland strewn with the dead of both sides. The air was in its infancy, and cavalry gave way to tanks, but this was a war fought hand-to-hand in trenches: Verdun, the Somme and Passchendaele were names that passed into the language as symbolic of the massive waste of life. Verdun survived a ten-month German bombardment the longest ever in the history of warfare- but at the cost of 700,000 lives overall, while British losses at Somme were the greatest of any wartime army to date. As soldiers faced their third winter, they bitterly recalled the promise made in 1914 that they’d be ‘home by Christmas’. They were not told which one… The slaughter on the battlefields of Europe still had far to go, as the entrenched armies of Germany and the Allies wiped out a whole generation of young men to control a few yards of mud. But the utter exhaustion of men and nations was relieved by the new theatre of conflict in the skies with air supremacy becoming a key factor in the war, and a symbol of a new era of glamorous warfare.

The SS had its beginnings in the turbulent street politics of the Weimar Republic. It became Heinrich Himmler’s personal powerbase and under him the SS grew into a vast private army and state-within-the-state. It was a chaotic, corrupt and often grossly inefficient organisation. But one part of it-the “Waffen” or “Armed” SS, formed initially as a fighting force- achieved worldwide fame and notoriety. The Waffen-SS won a unique reputation for daring élan and unfailing professionalism in combat. Yet if their courage was unquestioned, so too was the fear and loathing which they elicited-even, eventually, amongst their own people, and in the regular soldiers alongside whom they fought. In many of the most signal triumphs of German arms they played a conspicuous role, one far disproportionate to their numbers. In the long period of decline and retreat, as the Germans were steadily pushed back from east to west, despite repeatedly sustaining horrendous casualties, their discipline remained unbroken, their fighting ardour unimpaired, almost to the very end. After the war, the Waffen-SS were burned with the near exclusive blame for the most hideous crimes of the Nazi regime. It was only unfair insofar as many others were involved as well: and for all their matchless undoubted bravery, the Waffen-SS bears a reputation which will remain forever stained with infamy.

One of the most potent weapons used by the German army during the first two years of the war was the use of the infamous ‘Stormtrooper’. Soldiers who were sent in advance of the main thrust of the attack - taking their targets by complete surprise - in a quick, but immensely effective, short outburst of heavy force. Italy’s entry into the war in June 1940 posed a serious threat to Britain’s strategic positions in the Mediterranean, Egypt and Palestine. It also jeopardised the supplies of oil from the Middle East and the line of communication with India and the Far East through the Suez Canal. By February 1941, the allies had crushed the Italians; the resulting euphoria was short- lived - as General Rommel and the Afrika Korps entered the theatre of desert war.
