The small British Expeditionary Force, moving up into Belgium on the left flank of the French 5th Army, met with the full weight of the German 1st Army advancing towards Paris under the Schlieffen Plan. A short but intense fire fight - where the British caused heavy casualties to the thick masses of enemy infantry - was followed by a British withdrawal out of the canal salient. This manoeuvre was made more urgent by news that the French Army on the right flank was in retreat.

The story of the Arab-Israeli War of 1967, the echoes of which are still heard today in the middle east. In May of that year, Egypt, under President Nasser, blocked the Tiran Straits to Israeli shipping and began to gather huge numbers of troops in the Sinai Peninsula. At the same time King Hussein’s Jordan allowed Iraqi troops across her border. Israel was swift to respond to this turn of events and there was a devastating pre-emptive air strike against the Egyptian airforce. Jordanian and Syrian attacks were halted and repelled, after only six short days Israel had captured East Jerusalem, the Golan Heights, the West Bank and Sinai itself.

Although Sinai was returned to Egyptian control in 1979, Israel held on to her other prizes and it is these ‘occupied territories’ which are so much a part of the troubles that blight the region to this very day.

Truk Lagoon in the Western Pacific Ocean is one of the most attractive places on earth. Formed by a coral reef 140 miles long, its warm, shallow waters teem with marine life. Many visitors to Truk are divers attracted by a seemingly unspoilt world of natural beauty and peace. But there is another reason why divers are attracted to Truk Lagoon, a reason from the pages of history. In February 1944, this Micronesian paradise was visited by the full force of war, an air attack by the United States on the occupying Japanese forces. It was a massive aerial assault, and its consequences can still be seen today. Below the water surface of the lagoon are the preserved remains of ships, aircraft and other military material. It was warplanes launched from American carriers that created this underwater graveyard during the two days of Operation Hailstone.

As the Industrial Revolution clunked and hissed its way into life in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the possibilities new technologies brought were swiftly utilised by the armed forces of nations across the globe, in particular the opportunity for new ship design. Though not famous for being a naval conflict, the American Civil War was the first major battle of the Industrial Age and as such played host to what many naval analysts believe to be the most significant naval engagement in history - the battle between the Confederates’ vessel Merrimack and the Union ship, the Monitor. While the battle itself was inconclusive, the technology deployed would influence ship design from that time onwards - the day of the mighty wooden man-of-war was over and the age of the Ironclad was dawning. This programme goes aboard one of these new breed of ships, the HMS Warrior - a ship so feared and respected that its mere presence in British waters was sufficient deterrent to all potential enemies, so much so she has never fired a shot in anger.
