The infamous Japanese attack on the US naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii was one of the most significant events of World War II. The Battle of the Mediterranean was the name given to the naval campaign fought in the Mediterranean Sea during World War II, from 10 June 1940 to 2 May 1945. For the most part, the campaign was fought between the Italian Royal Navy (Regia Marina), supported by other Axis naval and air forces, and the British Royal Navy, supported by other Allied naval forces, such as Australia, Netherlands, Poland and Greece. US naval and air units joined the Allied side in 1942.

The Siege of Leningrad, also known as the Leningrad Blockade (Russian: блокада Ленинграда, transliteration: blokada Leningrada) was a prolonged military operation by the German Army Group North and the Finnish Defence Forces to capture Leningrad in the Eastern Front theatre. It started on 8 September 1941, when the last land connection to the city was severed. Although the Soviets managed to open a narrow land corridor to the city on 18 January 1943, the total lifting took place on 27 January 1944, 872 days after it began. It was one of the longest and most destructive sieges in history and the most costly in terms of casualties

After the calamitous defeat at Dunkirk during 1940, there were less than 100 tanks left in Britain. The Vauxhall Company were given just one year to design, develop and manufacture a replacement for the Matilda II. Rushed into service by a desperate military, the Churchill had many teething troubles and its operational debut at Dieppe in August 1942 was an unmitigated disaster, but the tanks went on to play an important role in major combat theatres throughout the war.

At the outbreak of World War II, German forces were recognised as the best equipped and most efficient in the world. The early successes of the Blitzkrieg campaign, however, disguised some fundamental deficiencies, especially in the Luftwaffe. Throughout the conflict, the Third Reich lacked an effective bomber and by the time this flaw was addressed, it was too late. The price Germany and Hitler would pay for not investing in four-engine long range bombers would be enormous, and a major contributing factor in the outcome of World War II.

Hitler promised his naval commanders that there would be no war in Europe before 1942. Accordingly, plans were laid for the best naval force in the world. So when Hitler precipitated the Second World War in 1939, only a fraction of the planned naval power was available and Germany did not even possess one aircraft carrier and despite having the battleships Bismarck and Tirpitz, the Kriegsmarine was always on the back foot, crippled by superior opponents and strangled by bureaucratic neglect at home.

In many theatres of operation during World War Two, men did battle from afar. Bombs dropped from the skies, torpedoes fizzed from submarines, long - range artillery rained shells, tanks blasted through cities. Many battles, however, were fought at close quarters and it was here that the infantry looked to the power of small arm fire to gain the upper hand. This episode compares and contrasts some of these weapons, highlighting their development and use by all armies involved in the war. The weapons under review include Mortars, Landmines, Bazookas and Hand Grenades - some of the most feared instruments of war ever invented. 3D graphics and animation is featured to illustrate the workings and capabilities of the weapons and there are interviews with historians and military authorities.

For a hundred years since the first semi-successful attempts during the American Civil War, submarine warfare had been fraught with difficulties and failure. The Second World War showed the first widespread use of these underwater vessels and their major advantages.
