“So long as the English tongue survives, the word ‘Dunkerque’ will be spoken with reverence”…The glowing language with which the New York Times greeted the extraordinary rescue of the beleaguered British Expeditionary Force from otherwise certain defeat and captivity on the continent, was in many ways typical of the time. In Britain, despite Churchill’s stern reminder that “wars are not won by evacuations”, a tangle of myths quickly sprung up around Dunkirk, which came to be regarded almost as a major victory. A major victory it certainly was not. Dunkirk was a brilliantly executed withdrawal of land forces - minus all their equipment - across the Channel, following a series of unparallel military disasters. Indeed, to the Germans, Dunkirk was virtually a sideshow. Intent on completing the conquest of France, they no longer regarded the small British army as posing any significant threat.

For the French, Dunkirk became a bitter symbol of British betrayal. Quarrels and misunderstandings had beset the Alliance, and at one stage the British were near to systematically deceiving their partner. Yet the evacuation owed much to the unstinting bravery of the French troops fighting at the Dunkirk perimeter or beyond, and gratitude was not wanting.

The visions conjured up of a ragged fleet of fishing boats, yachts and dinghies sailing the Channel, their pilots risking life and limb to save our soldiers from certain defeat and captivity, is vividly realised using very rare footage only recently obtained and painstakingly reassembled.

Named after the “divine wind” which had twice intervened to prevent invasion by the armies of Kublai Kahn in the 13th Century, the Kamikaze pilots symbolised the extreme lengths the Japanese Imperial forces were prepared to go when faced with defeat. Opposed by the might of the American fleet, rebuilt after the surprise attack at Pearl Harbour, the Imperial seal of approval was given to suicide air attacks on the enemy stalking them in the Pacific.

Honoured for its purity, suicide was shrouded in ceremony and mysticism, capturing the Samurai spirit. It took several military forms when Japan withdrew from the League of Nations after occupying Manchuria in 1931. Ramming techniques were perfected alongside the development of human bombs, bullets and torpedoes, as the suicide tactics struck terror into the hearts of men trying to survive – by men wishing to die. It was the suicide pilots, dubbed “black edged cherry blossoms” who were the most feared in this savage arena.

Captured within this rare archive footage is the nightmare chaos of the Pacific War, the air thick with tracer bullets and belching smoke as the sea foamed with devastating destruction. Although the Banzai tactics eventually led to mass suicide amongst the Japanese and the gradual depletion of men and machines resulted in defeat – the American navy had been forced into retreat by the horrific onslaught. They and the rest of the world had witnessed the Samurai mentality, where a whole nation, from the Emperor downwards was honoured to die for their cause.

In 1915 the armies of the Great War were locked in a stalemate of the trenches but a new form of combat would soon put an end to stationary battles - the aerial duel. Almost from its conception air-warfare captured the popular imagination, turning men into heroes, pilots into Fighter Aces. High above the trenches the courage and skill of men such as Baron Von Richthofen, Oswald Boelcke, Edward ‘Mick’ Mannock, Billy Bishop and Hermann Goering would make them legends in their own lifetime. During the Spanish Civil War a new generation of German Aces won its spurs, with the tactics and machines being perfected for the forthcoming “Blitzkrieg”. Throughout the Battle of Britain the hastily trained fighter pilots of the RAF learnt tactics “on the wing” against the Luftwaffe veterans of Spain. The heroisms and determination of the RAF Aces such as Joseph Frantichek and Ginger Lacey were all that stood between Britain and invasion.

In Europe and North Africa the flying skills and tactical genius of men like Werner Moelders, Adolf Galland and Hans Marseilles won the respect of friend and foe alike. On the Eastern Front Erich Hartmann, the Ace of Aces won 352 victories, an astonishing achievement never equalled in the history of aerial combat. This DVD charts the history of aerial combat from the Great War to the dawn of the jet age using rare archive footage, much of which has been unavailable in the West since World War Two.

The Largest Amphibious Force In History Assembled To Break Hitler’s Supposedly Invincible Line Of Defence.

Early in the morning of 6th June 1944, a vast and bizarre armada ploughed steadily against stiff head-winds through the rough waters of the English Channel, heading for the Normandy coast. Amongst the 5,000 vessels were many of the best British and American warships of stupendous collective firepower, also ancient battleships and tankers on their last voyage, destined to be sunk to provide breakwaters. Thousands of the craft had been built to make one journey only and that a short one; to ferry the invading allied forces together with their immense diversity of equipment on the last difficult, dangerous stretch from the transports to the shore of enemy occupied France.

It was D-Day. Conceived almost on the shores of Dunkirk, four years in the planning, two in the organising and one day in execution, the landing in Normandy was easily the largest and most extraordinary combined military operation ever attempted. It was also a crucial one. By 1944 it was becoming clear that Germany would lose the war in Europe, who would win it was another matter. Had D-Day failed and at times it came close to it, the western allies would have found it impossible to launch another operation for at least a year, perhaps more and today`s map of Europe might have been very different.

One of the millions taking part in the landings, Admiral Ramsay, was famous for his dislike of even the mildest exaggeration, as Overlord got under way, he told his officers “Gentlemen, I am sorry about all the superlatives, today they happen to be true.”

At 7.30am on July 1st 1916 the proud and eager young men of Kitchener’s Army went “over the top” for the first time; the Battle of the Somme had begun. By the end of that first terrible day almost 60,000 of their numbers had become casualties, and one of military history’s greatest disasters had unfolded before the disbelieving eyes of the Allied High Command.

The Battle of the Somme has come to epitomise the horror and waste of the Great War. Featuring newsreel footage and haunting photographs, this tells the tragic story of an army “two years in the making - ten minutes in the destroying”. It also features atmospheric reconstructions, dramatised “eye- witness” accounts and computer-generated mapping.

Whilst the Royal Air Force concentrated on bombing Germany by night, the United States Air Force carried out a dangerous strategic bombing campaign against Nazi Germany during daylight hours. On every raid some bombers suffered damage, exploding in mid-air, falling from the sky in pieces or in tears of flames. Operating from airfields in rural England, the Flying Fortresses and Liberator Bombers of the Eighth Air Force, and later the Ninth Air Force, escorted by Thunderbolt and Mustang fighters, learnt hard lesson in the skies over Europe. Daylight bombing was not exclusive to Europe and our programmes ends with a brief look at the Pacific theatre of war and Hiroshima.
