剧情简介
This History Channel series takes a fascinating look at the rise and decline of one of the most powerful fleets the world has ever known The Royal Navy.

分集介绍
The King’s Ships 1500 - 1599
In an exciting miniseries exploring the dramatic rise and decline of English naval power, host Prince Andrew, Duke of York, examines Britannia’s rule of the seas in 16th century. The story begins with the creation of a Royal Navy under orders of the powerful King Henry VIII with ships such as GREAT HARRY and the MARY ROSE. We follow the daring exploits of Sir Francis Drake’s GOLDEN HINDE and the revolutionary innovations of John Hawkins’ race-built Galleons - the backbone of Elizabethan naval power during the Age of Discovery. Finally the climatic showdown with Spain’s Invincible Armada in 1588 laid the groundwork for the dramatic rise of English naval power and Britannia’s Rule of the Seas in the years to come.

Wooden Walls 1600 - 1805
During the 17th century, the Royal Navy’s war efforts were aided immeasurably by Samuel Pepys’ visionary reforms of the Admiralty and the codification of naval tactics in “The Fighting Instructions” which transformed naval battles from uncontrollable melees into linear chess games on water. Led by Admirals Robert Blake, George Monck and others the Royal Navy’s MIGHTY WOODEN WALLS confronted the great Dutch Admirals, such as Maarten Tromp, in decisive battles that sustained Britain’s naval might. However, reforms initiated by France’s brilliant Minister of Marine, Jean-Baptiste Colbert, begin to bear fruit. The French built better designed, faster ships and trained their sailors more effectively than the British.

During the American War for Independence, Admirals such as Francois de Grasse and Pierre Suffren won astonishing victories over the Royal Navy that, ultimately, helped free America and threatened to topple England from the pinnacle of naval power. However, a little-known Scottish landlubber named John Clerk, stimulated a revolution in naval tactics and when the incomparable naval leader, Admiral Horatio Nelson, took the helm of HMS VICTORY at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, Britain’s mastery of the waves was re- established.

Steam, Steel and Dreadnoughts 1806 - 1918
With the exception of the surprising setbacks inflicted by America’s fledgling navy during the War of 1812, the 19th century was a time of unchallenged mastery for the Royal Navy. Nevertheless, technical innovations developed at an unprecedented rate and forever changed the face of the navy. Muzzle-loading cannon fired in broadsides were replaced by powerful breech-loaders mounted in revolving armoured turrets. Mighty Wooden Walls were shattered and replaced by iron and steel as sail gave way to steam power.

Finally, in an extraordinary leap forward in naval design and construction, a super-ship named the DREADNOUGHT was launched in 1906. She was the brainchild of the British admiral Sir John “Jacky” Fisher and, under the first Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill, sparked a naval arms race with Germany that culminated with the gigantic showdown at Jutland during WWI. Ironically, the very expense and complexity of the Dreadnought, which had kept the Royal Navy in the lead over its rivals, led to Britain’s ultimate naval downfall. The Washington Naval treaties of the 1920’s and 30’s saw Britain finally give up what no rival has been able to take from her in battle - absolute rule of the seas.

The Sun Never Sets 1919 - Present
The beginning of WWII found Winston Churchill standing alone and paying the price of the Naval Treaty limitations which allowed Germany and Japan to secretly build larger and more powerful ships. The loss of England’s superiority was devastatingly clear with the quick and deadly sinking of HMS HOOD and other powerful ships by Germany’s mighty monster, the BISMARCK, and deadly raider, the GRAF SPEE.

Alone in the Battle of the Atlantic among deadly submarine Wolfpacks, Admirals such as Sir Max Horten awakened the shocked British Admiralty and began the long fight back. With the rallying cry, “Sink The Bismarck!” and the successful pursuit of the GRAF SPEE, the Royal Navy began to turn the tide of the Navy. After WWII, the downsizing of the armed s and decline of the British Empire, signaled the end of the Royal Navy as a world . However, The Falklands War in 1982, and the sinking of the Argentine cruiser BELGRANO by a British nuclear submarine, once again demonstrated the continuing resolve and effectiveness of the Royal navy. Today, with her nuclear missile submarines and jump-jet carriers, the Royal Navy remains a decisive in NATO and a powerful reminder of the extraordinary centuries when Britannia ruled the waves.

HMS Victory
It was at the centre of one of the most famous naval conflicts of all time, the battle of Trafalgar. From its decks, Admiral Nelson oversaw the destruction of the combined Spanish and French fleets - even as he met his own death. The HMS Victory remains in the service of the Royal Navy some 200 years after its moment of glory. ENGLAND’S ROYAL WARSHIPS takes us aboard the legendary ship. From this unrivalled historical backdrop, we paint a picture of what it was like to serve on one of these “Wooden Worlds” 200 years ago.

Dramatic reconstructions take us into the heat of the fierce battles of the age of sail, showing just how these epic conflicts were fought and what life was like for the sailors of that day. Then, see how much has changed in two centuries with a tour of the HMS Manchester, one of Britain’s most modern warships. Follow the crew and feel the excitement and drama as they take their “action stations.” From the most famous warship in British history to the vessels that will carry the navy into the future, this is a fascinating look at ENGLAND’S ROYAL WARSHIPS.

HMS Dasher
It came without any warning. On Saturday, March 27th, 1943, the HMS Dasher, a British craft carrier, had completed two days of take off and landing exercises and was steaming to port just an hour and a half away.Suddenly, there was a terrific explosion, shaking the ship and propelling the two-ton landing crane 60 feet into the . Within minutes, the Dasher was sinking rapidly at the stern and the crew of 528 men were struggling to survive. The fate of the carrier has been shrouded in secrecy for over half a century and, even today, many of the families of the 379 men who perished do not know what happened. What is clear is that the survivors, floating in the cold water awaiting rescue from the many ships steaming toward them, were engulfed in flames as the sea, coated in diesel and aviation fuel, caught fire, killing most men and complicating the rescue. Drawing on the memories of survivors and evidence from the wreck, DISASTER AT SEA challenges the official reports and exposes schemes of secrecy.

History of the Royal Navy 1900 - 1943
In 1900, the role of the Royal Navy was to defend the Empire which spanned the globe. It had the largest and most powerful navy in the world and her fleet of 36 Battleships was more than all her potential enemies put together. The development and launch of the super-ship named the Dreadnought in 1906, made all other battleships obsolete. Her superior speed and armament was unprecedented and, under the first Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill, sparked a naval arms race with Germany culminating with the gigantic showdown at Jutland during WWI. The early part of the century also saw the development of the craft carrier and the introduction of naval aviation.

Germany chose to ignore its potential but, by 1939, the carrier was an essential arm to the Royal Navy’s fleet. Hitler’s bombarded of Danzig in 1939 was the start of six years of Naval conflict. The scuttling of the Sraff Spee off Montivideo was a dramatic coo for the Allies and, at the Norway Campaign in 1940, many lessons were learnt about the need for specialist landing vehicles. The miraculous evacuation of the British Expeditionary at Dunkirk in1940 was a carefully planned operation where the Navy turned a tactical defeat into a strategic victory. By the end of the operation a staggering 338,000 men were rescued. When the battlecruiser, HMS Hood, was sunk in May 1941, Churchill’s subsequent order was to “Sink the Bismarck”. After a relentless pursuit by the Royal Navy lasting three days, Germany’s flagship was sunk. It was a great victory to the Royal Navy.

History of the Royal Navy 1943 - 2000
After the fiasco of The Dieppe Raid in 1942, where 1,000 men were killed, the lessons learnt in amphibious warfare were put to good use on D-Day in June 1944. The Naval operation was called Naptune and its outcome turned the tide of the war. After WWII, the downsizing of the armed s and decline of the British Empire signaled the end of the Royal Navy as a world . However, the advent of the jet age saw the development of strike craft such as the Attacker, Scimitar, Buccaneer and the Harrier which helped bring the Royal Navy back to the forefront of world power. The Falklands War in 1982 and the sinking of the Argentine cruiser BELGRANO by a British nuclear ubmarine, once again demonstrated the continuing resolve of the Royal navy. At the end of the 20th Century, the Royal Navy is a slimmed-down but its craft carriers and fleet of Trident submarines patrol of world’s seas fulfilling the combined roles of war, peacekeeping and humanitarian relief, either alone or with its allies.

剧情简介
DSV Skandi Arctic is the biggest and newest saturation dive support ship, the mother ship for aquanauts working hundreds of metres below the surface in some of the world’s most dangerous jobs; see her in action on a gas pipeline repair in the North Sea.

On the frontline of exploring Earth’s final frontier, the sea floor, is a new breed of ship… the saturation dive support ship. The biggest, best and newest is Skandi Arctic. She’s the mother ship for aquanauts who work hundreds of meters below the surface on jobs considered, at least on this planet, the most dangerous in the world. Christened in 2009, Skandi is 157 meters long and the saturation dive habitat that sits on her stern is both state of the art and borderline science fiction.

Saturation divers are risk takers… adrenaline junkies… the pinnacle of the dive community. For 30 days straight, 24 divers live in the pressurized habitat that’s better suited for life on Mars and dive twice a day using diving bells to work deep below the surface. Each time they dive they put their lives at risk. If they lose air, pressure, or heat in their suits, they’re dead in seconds. On deck, the job of Skandi’s 90+crew is to support the divers to get the job done… hence the name, saturation dive support ship. For both the divers and the ship’s crew the stakes are high, the job dangerous, the technology space age and the potential for disaster omnipresent 24/7.

In September, 2010, Skandi Arctic travels into the cold, volatile, unpredictable North Sea to repair a gas pipeline off the north coast of Scotland. Mighty Ships will be there to live and breathe the dangerous lives of saturation divers on and below Skandi Arctic.

剧情简介
The US Marine Corps is the world’s most formidable fighting force, but as one Navy man aboard USS New York says, the Marines may have “20 million ways to kill us but only on the beach. That’s why they have us.” This ship is built to launch up to 800 Marines and their fierce battle hardware ashore. Her massive well-deck floods to unleash hovercrafts that fly across the seas at a speed of up to 40 knots, along with floating tanks that swim ashore and then rumble along the beach. 剧情简介
Grand Designs Indoors is a lesser known spin-off, with the same format. As the name suggests the series concentrated on the interior transformation of these properties. Only containing six episodes, this series was broadcast in 2001. Each episode Kevin McCloud follows different couples / families who are trying to build / improve a property. They can go from the downright stupid to the most high class and dignified properties. Grand Designs is a British television series produced by Talkback Thames and broadcast on Channel 4 which features unusual and often elaborate architectural home-building projects. The programme has been presented by Kevin McCloud since it first aired in April 1999, and 124 episodes have been broadcast in eleven series.

All episodes generally follow a regular format, with small variations depending on the progress of the build. At the beginning of an episode, McCloud meets the clients embarking on the project; he visits the site with them, and discusses the plans for the building. A computer visualisation or computer-aided design view of the intended project is shown. Once ground work commences, he visits the site periodically, following the build progress, noting any changes, hitches or delays; the build frequently runs over budget and completes later than scheduled. McCloud will often do a piece to camera concentrating on any unique materials or features in the house. He visits again once the building is then made watertight, and the first and second fixes have commenced. He makes a final visit to the site in its finished or near-finished state, once the occupants have moved in. A tour of the house is then given; McCloud brings the episode to a close summarising the house, its construction, and his opinions.

If a house is unlikely to be completed before filming finishes, it will often be revisited in a later episode. In more recent series, McCloud revisits past unfinished builds once they have been completed and may stay overnight.

The properties featured in Grand Designs are hugely varied in style and design, from underground homes to converted water towers to buildings constructed in methods of sustainable architecture; the only common factor is that they are all unusual or extravagant.

分集介绍
The Former Electricity Sub-Station
Anne and Richard Curtis have found a disused electricity substation in Sunderland. And set about converting it into a large four bedroom family home on a tight budget. Never having been to Morocco, but are taking inspiration from a Moroccan Interiors book. Trying to keep costs down Richard does most of the work himself while trying to hold down a day job as a Policeman.

The Barbican Flat
Financial Analyst Yuen-Wei Chew commissions Paul Daly, top nightclub designer, (this was his first time doing a domestic interior) to redesign the interior of his fifth floor, 1 bedroom 750sq ft, Barbican flat. As a vision of contemporary living with a fusion of two strong design elements, Zen meets Pop. With an initial budget of around £20,000, but with bespoke elements such as a walk-in wardrobe costing £6,000 and window blinds costing £9,000, things soon go out of control with the total being closer to £115,000.

The Dilapidated Georgian House
Featuring Tony and Sharon Relph, a couple restoring a dilapidated 200 year old Georgian house in London, to its former glory. They have very little money and plan to do most of the work themselves. If they manage to restore the grade two listed house in the Georgian style, the council will allow them to live there rent free for a period of their lease. They peel back layers of wallpaper to find a historical scrapbook of finishes which is donated to The English National Heritage. A modern interpretation of a period home with close attention to detail and sensitive repair, this is a true labour of love.

The Half-Timbered Cottage
Kathryn and Charlie Raywood set about renovating a farmhouse cottage. The couple draw inspiration from Sainte Chapelle, Shakespeare’s birthplace and Gwidyr Castle. They start to strip the place back to its medieval roots. But with a meagre budget of just £10,000 the basic structural work to the house eats up 80% of the budget, leaving a mere £2,000 for all decoration including a new kitchen, bathroom, lavish fabrics, tapestries and medieval furniture. They resort to enlisting family and friends to get things back on track. They buy Asian antiques which resemble medieval originals at a fraction of the price and up their overdraft in an attempt to get the project completed.

The Shaker Style Summer House and Thames Houseboat
Featuring renowned artist Damien Hirst and his wife Maia Norman, a couple who are pursuing the ultimate dream – a personally designed, secluded Shaker style summer house in the grounds of his country home (in Devon), as a retreat from the big bad world. Designer Mike Rundell, whom he worked with to create the Pharmacy restaurant in West London, to help him with his challenge. Maia is getting to work on their new houseboat in Chelsea (overall budget of £300,000 including the purchase of the boat), with the hope of turning it into the perfect London hang-out.

The Regency Home
Hayley and Pedro Castle have lived in Brighton for 5 years in a small regency style cottage near the seafront. They want to clear out their place and start again. Using the ‘St Martins’ Lane Hotel’ as inspiration, they plan to modernise their home into a light, airy and totally modern space. The planned budget is just £23,000. As the work starts, all does not run smoothly, tensions run high as they fall out with the main contractor, after the property is plagued with structural problems, damp and leaks. Despite all of these nightmares, delays and overspending, the results in the end are very glamorous.

Modernist Villa
Gil Briffa, an architect, and his wife Hilary, from St Albans, Herts, wanted a house they could retire to in southern Spain, but not just any old place would do. High in the Andalucian hills, 30 minutes form Malaga on Spain’s Costa de Sol, the Briffa’s heart’s desire was a ruthlessly modernist construction of glass and light, far removed from the whitewashed fincas (farmhouses) that dot the local countryside.

House from Straw
Mark and Deborah (Debbie) Sampson and daughter, Tilley, like to practice an ecologically sound way of life. Together, the family’s over-riding desire is to make a statement about who they are and how they choose to live their life, and to be accepted for the way they are by the local people.

Masseria Impisi: An Artists’ Retreat
Puglia, in Italy’s deep south, where the country’s heel rounds to the foot’s arch, is a land of shimmering heat, olive groves and artists’ dreams. It is also the place where artists, like David Westby and Leone (Leo) Witton, became hard-working artisans to turn a derelict olive farm into a Roman country estate – despite the worst obstructions of Italian bureaucracy and with very little money.

19th Century Manor House
Denise (Deni) Daniel and Doug Ibbs don’t hang around. The couple, in their mid-50s and from Dorset, bought a 19th century manor house in Creuse, Limousin – in central France – on a Sunday, having seen it for the first time ever on the previous Tuesday on the Internet and visited it on the Thursday. They don’t mind hard work too, which is even better news because the house was a wreck.

Church Conversion
A chance encounter, childhood memories and a desire to split their time between Dublin and County Mayo was all the inspiration Andrew and Jackie Lohan required to go about buying and restoring a derelict church. Built in 1835 and abandoned for 101 years, since it was struck by lightning and burned to the ground in 1902, the church was in a dreadful state of disrepair when the Lohans and their two children stumbled across it on a family holiday to the area in the west of Ireland in 1998.

The Tuscan Castle
This week Kevin meets a couple, Janne Hoff-Tilley and Howard Smythe, who bought a ruin and moved to Italy in 1999, hoping to start work building their dream home in Tuscany. Since then they’ve spent all their time trying to get planning permission, but finally, after four years, they are about to start work. And it’s an epic project: they have bought a derelict 1,000-year-old castle in the Tuscan hills. Now, the couple face their biggest battle of all: rebuilding this massive ruin into a comfortable and luxurious five-bedroom home.

300 Year Old Chalet
Nicky and James Dobree were raised in France and in a mountainous area respectively. Nicky was raised in France, James in Beirut – both have fond memories of the mountains as children. So it was natural for them to one day look to buy a place amongst France’s tallest peaks, the Alps. The journey moving the family, including their two young sons, Fabian and Felix, from South London to a renovated 300-year-old farmhouse in Les Gets was to have its ups and downs. It was never meant to be a permanent move. The original plan was to develop the top two floors of the chalet so the family could spend the summer there, overseeing the completion of the bottom floors. They would then be able to rent out the whole chalet in the winter months. The family were only planning to use their new home for the summer seasons.

Florida Villa
Spain is the first choice of many Britons planning to build a new life abroad, but it is a little more unusual for South Africans to settle on the Iberian Peninsula. Ten years living and working in London may help explain why Derek and Jen Ray chose Orihuela, inland of Alicante on the Costa Blanca, as the place to build a home and raise their three children, Jenna, Eden and Linzi.
