101 Gadgets That Changed the World The history of the gadget is both the history of invention and the history of men's lives. What man doesn't remember when he mastered the iPhone, the Swiss Army Knife, or the Walkman? While they are personal milestones, gadgets can change the course of history. How did the transistor radio create Rock and Roll, or the audio-cassette overthrow the Shah of Iran? Popular Mechanics Magazine partners with History(tm) on this two-hour special, assembling a panel of the world's most renowned tech gurus to generate the definitive list. 101 Gadgets That Changed the World is hosted by Richard Dean Anderson (MacGyver) and features Popular Mechanics' James Meigs, Jim Cameron, James Dyson and others discussing the gadgets that inspired, amused or confused them. Is the combination lock the most influential gadget ever invented? The Zippo lighter? The bra? It's a fast paced countdown to Number 1. To make our list of 101, a gadget had to be something you could hold in your hands, mechanical or electronic, and a mass-produced personal item. The rest was up to the judges. Check out our selections, and let us know in the Post’s what you think!

101 Fast Foods that Changed the World Across borders, cultures and time, food is one thing that all people share. And from the time of the caveman to today's spaceman we like our food to go. While the burger and fries reign supreme in the world of fast food, grub on the go has taken us way past the drive-thru. Quick eats like beef jerky have allowed us to explore new frontiers and pocket-sized portables like protein bars enable us to push our bodies to the limit, no matter the conditions. Fueled by pizza, we have burned the midnight oil, and from the battleground (MREs) to the final frontier (space food,) food is always along for the ride. This is the countdown of fast foods that takes us back, propels us forward, and sometimes even gazes into the future

The 100k House: Tricks of the Trade Last year in The House that £100K Built, Kieran Long and Piers Taylor followed self-builders as they took on the biggest gamble of their lives, trying to build a home from scratch for less than £100k. Kieran and Piers helped them create the dream homes they longed for by being clever with their cash and creative with design. This time, Kieran and Piers are coming to the aid of homeowners as they take on ambitious building projects. They have all sorts of problems to solve, are on the tightest of budgets and with little or no experience are desperate for help. Kieran and Piers come up with ingenious solutions, inspiring them with big ideas and challenging them to create an extraordinary home out of the one they already have. But with design dilemmas at every turn and their life savings at stake, will homeowners manage to create the house they've always wanted but believed they could never have?

[edit]Part 1

Former nurse Dawn dreamed of a relaxing home for her retirement, but an impulse buy has left her with a tiny cottage that's so small she doesn't even invite her family round. Can Kieran and Piers unlock the potential of her 150-year-old home or will Dawn be determined to do things her own way?
Angela and Dale's disastrous extension has blighted their lives for nearly a decade, but Angela's recent health problems mean that they now urgently need to fix their failed home. With £5k to remodel the whole rear of their house, the challenge is on for Piers to come up with an ingenious solution to bring their home up to scratch.

[edit]Part 2

Sue moved into a dark, unloved 1920s semi in Kent with big ideas to reconfigure the entire house. She is keen to make a fresh start after a traumatic divorce, but her initial plans are scuppered when she finds out her £25k budget is not enough to do all the work. Kieran and Piers set about revising her plans, but as Sue ploughs on and the money runs out, she is left to make some tough decisions in order to try and have the house she so desperately wants.
Kath and Greg's family home in Shrewsbury is a 1970s timewarp, with a kitchen that is so impractical and potentially dangerous that their daughters are often kept away. As the true cost of updating the kitchen sinks in, the family has to abandon plans for a glossy kitchen and roll up their sleeves to tackle the bigger problems. While Kieran investigates alternative ways to get the kitchen of their dreams, Piers is tested to come up with low-cost solutions to seemingly insurmountable problems.

[edit]Part 3

Abigail and Christian's house is in an idyllic location but is dark, dingy and unsuitable for family life. On the brink of spending their entire savings on an extension which won't deliver what they need, it is up to Kieran and Piers to search for a bold architectural solution within their tight budget.
Madelaine inherited her parents' 1960s home but has a dilemma - she wants to bring the house up to date but worries about ripping out a lifetime of memories along the way. With emotions running high, it is up to Piers to find an innovative solution that gives Madelaine the contemporary style she wants, while retaining the character of her beloved family home.

[edit]Part 4

Ronnie and Nicky are years behind on the property ladder after living in barracks and tents around the world whilst working in the armed forces. Their latest battle is to turn the dark and badly planned bungalow that was all they could afford into a dream family home. Piers challenges them to rip up their current plans and be more ambitious, while Kieran pushes them to stop shopping and start designing. How will these design novices cope when they realise they cannot afford to finish their home in a conventional way?
Meanwhile, Nigel in Gloucestershire has DIY experience but no idea what to do. A slow and steady renovation project has created a DIY war zone, but the pace needs to change now that his new partner Kim and her kids have moved in. With just £7,000 available, Piers must help them spend it in the right places - but can they decide where to start? And will it ever be finished?

[edit]Part 5

Mikyla lived as a single mum of two in her Victorian terrace house, but now that her fiancé has moved in they are bursting at the seams. It is up to Kieran and Piers to inspire them and help decide how and where to spend their budget. The ideal solution is an extension - but with only £11,000 to spend, will they be able to make every penny count and create something extraordinary?
Charity worker Rita has managed to scrape together £3,000, but that is all she has for an entire new kitchen. Full of design ambitions, Rita wants something amazing but she cannot see a way to achieve her dream kitchen on her small budget. Piers's biggest challenge turns out to be steering Rita away from the obvious temptation of the high street and towards an ambitious bespoke design. Will she be able to take a design leap of faith in a radical new direction?

[edit]Part 6

Ben and Mita fell in love with their warehouse apartment due to its central location and lofty style, but two children later they've run out of space, can't afford to move and are at a loss as to what to do. Piers and Kieran need to fundamentally change the way the couple perceive their home and encourage them to adopt an ambitious architectural solution. With some tough financial decisions to make, will the couple finally transform their chaotic flat into a tranquil family home?
Graham would love his partner Gabrielle to move into his house, but currently she says she'd rather use a chamber pot than his outdated bathroom. Meanwhile the kitchen is the last place they'd want to enjoy a romantic meal. With just £10k to fix both problems, Piers must come up with a series of solutions for creating luxurious spaces, but will his architectural tricks of the trade persuade Gabrielle to finally move in?

The 100k House: Tricks of the Trade Series-2 New series. Architects Piers Taylor and Gurmeet Sian help two homeowners in need of life-changing transformations to their existing homes.

[edit]Jaimelee/Lee & Suzanne/Antonio

In Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, they come to the aid of builder Lee, who added an extension to his suburban semi. However, two years later the ground floor is half built, and his partner Jaimelee and their three children are left living in a building site. Meanwhile, Suzanne, Antonio and toddler Sophia struggle with the awkward layout of their west London flat, giving Gurmeet the challenge of rethinking it.

[edit]Mark/Linda & Chris/Claire

In the East Riding of Yorkshire, Chris and Claire need a solution to a problem with privacy in their quirky former Post Office home. The floor-to-ceiling shop windows mean they are overlooked by passers-by, but Robert Jamison has a radical proposal. Mark and Linda live in a narrow house which is too dark and feels too small, so Piers Taylor reveals tricks that can transform it into a brighter home.

[edit]Lisa/Richard & Julie

Lisa and her son live in a former butcher shop in Derbyshire, and Piers Taylor faces a huge challenge when he tries to help transform it on a bugdet of just £8,000. There is no kitchen at all, and he must use cost saving methods to inject colour into the house. Meanwhile, in Shropshire, Julie and Richard have fallen out of love with their home, which is a mismatch of styles and eras. Meredith Bowles must find changes that will make the biggest difference, and takes inspiration from tricks used in a 1960s property.

[edit]Skye/Matt & Mary/Luke

Piers Taylor helps to transform a small three-bedroom house in West London for couple Skye and Matt, who have four children and a fifth on the way. He must find low cost ways to use every inch of their home, and comes up with a series of sleeping platforms that could utilise wasted space in the loft. Meanwhile, Adam Khan finds an ingenious way of a splitting an ordinary home into two for Mary and her adult son Luke, who cannot afford a place of his own as a consequence of rising house prices.

[edit]Cath/Rob & Karen/David

Piers Taylor helps a family build an extension on their ex-council house in Warwick, suggesting that they ditch their ambitious plan and try a simpler one. He designs clever storage, helps them find a low-cost solution for the floor, and creates a multi-coloured porch that would normally cost thousands. Meanwhile, Cheryl Pilliner-Reeves comes to the aid of Karen and David in Ipswich, who are desperate to fall in love with their Victorian terrace, which has a mix of levels and corridors. She must find a way to connect it all, and creates two bespoke staircases for just £600, as well as helping Karen get her dream kitchen.

[edit]Hardeep/Rupinder & Adam

Desperate to continue living in London, Adam bought one of the thinnest homes in the country. However, at six foot wide in places, the former alleyway was dark and barely habitable. Architect Katy Marks helps to transform his home with radical ideas, and Piers Taylor demonstrates how lighting, furniture and colours can make all the difference. Meanwhile, in Walsall, Hardeep and Rupinder have plenty of room for their family, but in all the wrong places. Piers Taylor designs them the ultimate social space, and encourages them to orientate their home around the garden.

[edit]Information

The 100k House: The Final Fix Ambitious ideas, the tightest of budgets and a desperate need for fresh ideas united the projects that Kieran Long and architect Piers Taylor followed on The House that £100K Built. Those homes were never quite finished but the owners have had to move in. So, two years later, Piers is returning to tackle a final set of challenges. With unexpected design dilemmas to solve, all on a shoestring budget, it's now or never as they battle to complete their homes for good.

[edit]Part 1

In this first episode, pizza van owner Martin from Leeds not only saved money but also improved his building by stepping out of his comfort zone, ditching conventional approaches to the build. But now, he's still got a series of rooms to finish and is at a total loss of what to do. Piers must find a way to rejuvenate Martin's thirst for an incredible home without blowing his budget. Kieran and Piers struggled to get Ruth and Tony to see how important decisions they made on the outside of their home were to it fitting in with the stunning Shropshire landscape. Now, they are facing their biggest and final challenge - to make their modern home blend with the ramshackle collection of buildings that surround it. But will inspiration from one of the country's most stunning contemporary homes be too much for them, and can a solution be found for less than £200?

[edit]Part 2

Sumati had just £50,000 to build her home in the Scottish borders. She wrestled with fresh design ideas and inexpensive interior finishes, but a year on her home remains incomplete and is now under threat. With driving wind and rain causing damage to the unfinished exterior, Piers must find a way to reinvigorate Sumati to complete her home before it's too late. Young Devon farmers, Justin and Mary, spent every penny they had creating their first home together. Today it is home to baby Oscar too, but their low cost home is dominated by a forest of baby gates and their prime living spaces have become cramped and cluttered. With a budget of just £200, Piers is challenged to come up with a bespoke design solution to reclaim their precious space - but having shied away from distinctive design ideas in the past, will Justin and Mary take the leap?
