Outback Queensland is the realm of bush poets, flying doctors, stampeding dinosaurs and wily stockmen. It’s here, in this rugged and remote region, that legends are born and legacies created. Amid the desert dust, you’ll discover a rich history of animal and human occupation that stretches back more than 95 millions years.

Lark Quarry has the largest group of running dinosaur tracks in the world, while the World Heritage-listed Australian Fossil Mammal Site (Riversleigh/Naracoorte) is one of the most significant fossil deposits in the world and the richest known fossil mammal deposit in Australia.

Engravings, ochre stencils and freehand paintings on the sandstone overhangs of Carnarvon Gorge National Park are a poignant reminder of the indigenous people who used the area for thousands of years. Thirty thousand years on and intrepid Australian explorers Burke and Wills were forging north towards the Gulf of Carpentaria during their south-north crossing of the continent in 1860-61.

London 1864. On a Hackney bound train, a guard discovers blood in a first class carriage - and a body on the railway embankment. For the first time, a murder has taken place on Britain’s railways. Over a hundred years later, this single documentary for BBC Two uses the first hand testimony of the people involved at the time to explore this unique event and how it provoked a huge public outcry and debate. The story quickly became a news sensation as the dangers of the brave new world of the train were laid bare. Over a hundred years later, the witnesses to this story may be long dead but their words survive in court transcripts, memoirs, letters and vivid journalism. These testimonies are now used to tell the story, taking the documentary deep into the nineteenth century to meet an extraordinary cross section of real-life Victorian London - from the engine driver who found the body to the detective in charge of the investigation. Who killed Mr Briggs?

Looking at the marriage of Charles Dickens through the eyes of his wife Catherine, Sue Perkins exposes the lesser known reality of the Dickens family Christmas - very different from the heart-warming versions he presented in A Christmas Carol. Sue turns her attention to the woman behind the man, revealing parallels between the female characters he created and his changing affections for his wife, namely, in Dickens’s mind, her transition from innocent virgin to middle-aged frump. Scrutinising Dickens’s public defence in a national newspaper of his treatment toward Catherine, Sue seeks to set the record straight, promulgating her unconditional love for Dickens and support for his career. Along the way, she has plenty of laughs, evokes the realities of Victorian marriage, interviews many of today’s leading biographers of Mr and Mrs Dickens, explores Charles’s role in creating Christmas as we know it - and gets to make a twelfth night cake.

From the magical films of the silent era to the celebrated work of director David Lean and high definition television, this documentary revisits films and interviews from the archive to answer the question of why Dickens’s novels have inspired so many hundreds of adaptations on screen.

This co-production with Dickens 2012 not only encapsulates the history of Dickens’s time, but also of the 100 years in which his work has survived most acutely on screen. It is not only the stories, themes and characters of Dickens’s writing that translate so well onto screen - Sergei Eisenstein argued that there is something essentially filmic in his unique prose style; that Dickens’s rapid ‘cutting’ within scenes and from scene to scene coupled with his seamless mixture of the bizarrely comic with the terrifyingly profound was itself proto-cinematic.

Dickens wrote the way a camera saw before film had been invented and he remains to this day the most cinematic of writers.

What has become of the gloomy, majestic house in Rochester where the skeletal Miss Havisham resided? Does Joe Gargery’s cottage still stand in Chalk? And what became of the notorious Bowes Academy, the harshest of the Yorkshire schools now known to the world as Dotheboys Hall?

Sir Derek Jacobi for the very first time takes you on a journey through Charles Dickens’ England, exploring the settings where the Victorian author’s most famous stories unravelled.

Discovering all the most important places, towns and cities that were the inspiration to some of the most famous settings in literature, we feature well over 100 locations, including the Cooling Church in Kent used in the opening chapter of Great Expectations and the almost forgotten London Roman Baths used by David Copperfield.

Many of the locations, such as the interior of 58 Lincoln’s Inn Fields where Dickens first read in public, the All The Year Round offices in Covent Garden where he lived and worked and Gad’s Hill in Kent, the last in a very long list of his homes, are simply not open to the public and have rarely been filmed.

Travelling from Portsmouth to Isle of Wight to numerous London locations, to Bury St Edmonds, Rochester and Chatham, to Broadstairs, Folkestone, and Barnard Castle to St George’s Hall in Liverpool, Derek Jacobi leads this mammoth expedition around Charles Dickens’ England before visiting the author’s final resting place in Poets’ Corner at Westminster Abbey.

In Victorian society the workhouse represented the underbelly of society, where anyone who was poor, homeless, unemployed or ill was sent to live. With no benefits system in place, destitute people were either left to starve on the streets or forced to submit themselves to the harsh conditions of the workhouse where they worked ten hours a day doing menial tasks such as breaking rocks up or picking apart ropes.

Fern Britton, actor Brian Cox, author Barbara Taylor Bradford and model Kiera Chaplin - granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin - uncover the facts about how their families went from a life of poverty to end up in the workhouse. Fern is upset to find that her pauper ancestors would have had their bodies dissected for medical science as part of their welfare debt to society when they died in the workhouse. Brian’s great grandfather was a low paid Irish immigrant who moved to Glasgow in search of work but ended up in Barnhill poorhouse. Barbara is shocked to discover her mother’s secret workhouse past - she went into Ripon workhouse as a child when her own mother became pregnant. Kiera is horrified by the reign of terror endured by her family in the Lambeth workhouse.

Brian Cox, Barbara Taylor Bradford and Felicity Kendal discover more about how their relatives eventually escaped the workhouse system. Brian’s great uncle was separated from his father, taken out of the poorhouse and sent to a foster family a hundred miles away in Ayrshire. Although Barbara’s grandmother did get married, her aunts and uncles found themselves destitute once more and they were taken into the custody of Dr Barnardo’s and sent to Australia under a government backed scheme. Felicity Kendal learns that her great grandmother’s illegitimate child was forcibly taken into the care of the workhouse, but years later became a decorated war hero and successful farmer in Australia.

From England to Australia in a World War I Bomber…“Vimy I, cleared to land,” radioed the control tower. “Welcome back to Darwin after all these years.” With those words, the dream of Peter McMillan, an American, and Lang Kidby, an Australian, was realized: to recreate a 1919 flight from England to Australia that showed the feasibility of long distance air travel. This journey chronicles this record-breaking flight that marked the beginning of commercial aviation. Resurrecting original blueprints, McMillan and Kidby built a World War I era Vickers Vimy biplane bomber with open cockpit and cotton-covered wings, fitting it with modern engines and navigation gear. You’ll witness the joy of cruising over the Taj Mahal and the aftermath of a crash landing on Sumatra. This story interweaves the 1919 and 1994 adventures, separated by 75 years but united in a common spirit of daring in The Greatest Flight. Alcock and Brown’s flight happened when a spirit for adventure and incredible skill combined to accomplish a truly heroic act. Today, significant pioneering and invention often happens at the far reaches of science and at the molecular level; invention appears out of reach today.

The Vimy project was organized in 1993 by Peter McMillan and Lang Kidby to build a flying replica of the 1919 Vickers Vimy and relive its historic flights across the globe. This Vimy has flown nearly 40,000 miles (64,000 kilometers) at this point, touching down in 35 countries, reminding all who see her of the bravery, proficiency, and self-reliance demonstrated by the pioneers of aviation. This machine has truly become the “Galleon of the Skies,” as she was known in 1919. The project has been driven entirely through volunteer enthusiasm with the critical assistance of corporate and media partners including the National Geographic Society. The Vickers Vimy replica that flew across the Atlantic has become almost as famous as its original ancestors, whose feats also include the first London to Australia flight in 1919 and the first London to Cape Town flight in 1920.
