Author Ken Follett presents two dramatic historical documentaries in which he explores the facts behind the setting of his fictional works. No other period in history stirs the imagination like the Middle Ages. It’s an era cloaked in mystery, a time when noblemen and priors, master builders and monks dominated society and simple, peasant folk struggled to survive. Plagues, famines and witch burnings were commonplace. Those who questioned the authority of the Church faced the ultimate penalty - death. Yet there were some who stood up for reason and righteousness, such as the heroes and heroines of Ken Follett’s best-selling book, World Without End.

When the Bubonic Plague arrived from Asia in 1347, claiming its first victims in an Italian port, few would have guessed that this unprecedented epidemic, the Black Death, would claim the lives of up to half Europe’s population, killing tens of millions in just over two years.

Three women whose resolve, intelligence and bravery helped shape history - at a time when females had few rights and were excluded from the priesthood, the military and universities - are studied by Ken Follett.

While challenging common beliefs on the history of civilization, the film takes the audience back to 12 thousand years ago, to Göbeklitepe, an ancient site recently found in SanliUrfa, Turkiye. With its brilliant graphics and interviews with experts, the film shows how old taboos come tumbling down as we keep scratching the surface.

Archaeologically categorised as a site of the Pre-Pottery Neolithic A Period (c. 9600–7300 BC) Göbeklitepe is a series of mainly circular and oval-shaped structures set on the top of a hill. Excavations began in 1995 by Prof. Klaus Schmidt with the help of the German Archaeological Institute. There is archaeological proof that these installations were not used for domestic use, but predominantly for ritual or religous purposes. Subsequently it became apparent that Gobeklitepe consists of not only one, but many of such stone age temples. Furthermore, both excavations and geo magnetic results revealed that there are at least 20 installations, which in archaeological terms can be called a temple. Based on what has been unearthed so far, the pattern principle seems to be that there are two huge monumental pillars in the center of each installation, surrounded by enclosures and walls, featuring more pillars in those set-ups.

All pillars are T-shaped with heights changing from 3 to 6 meters. Archaeologists interpret those T-shapes as stylized human beings, mainly because of the depiction of human extremities that appear on some of the pillars. What also appears on these mystical rock statues, are carvings of animals as well as abstract symbols, sometimes picturing a combination of scenes.

Foxes, snakes, wild boars, cranes, wild ducks are most common. Most of these were carved into the flat surfaces of these pillars. Then again, we also come across some three-dimensional sculptures, in shape of a predator depicting a lion, descending on the side of a T-pillar.

The unique method used for the preservation of Gobeklitepe has really been the key to the survival of this amazing site. Whoever built this magnificent monument, made sure of its survival along thousands of years, by simply backfilling the various sites and burying them deep under, by using an incredible amount of material and all these led to an excellent preservation.

Each T-shaped pillar varies between 40 to 60 tonnes, leaving us scratching our heads as to how on earth they accomplished such a monumental feat. In a time when even simple hand tools were hard to come by, how did they get these stone blocks there, and how did they erect them? With no settlement or society to speak of, with farming still a far cry away, in a world of only roaming hunter-gatherers, the complexity and developed blueprints of these temples represented another enigma for archaeologists. Do we have to change our vision of how and when civilized human history began? The plot thickens …

Dick Smith’s Population Puzzle Broadcast: 12/08/2010 on ABC Australia

What does it take to spark a change in national attitudes? High profile entrepreneur Dick Smith is on a crusade to influence one of the biggest public policy issues facing the country - unplanned population growth.

“Like many Australians, Dick Smith hadn’t thought much about how our rising population might be affecting the nation. He hadn’t joined the dots connecting our record levels of population growth with increased congestion, property prices and hospital queues.

He just accepted the mantra that a Big Australia was a Good Australia. But a fateful phone call from Dick’s daughter, Jenny, changed everything. Jenny asked her father why nobody was talking about population in the lead up to the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. After all, she queried, wasn’t it people who created carbon emissions? Population was the elephant in the room that no one was discussing. And it set Dick off on a six-month journey of discovery to explore how rising population was changing Australia and the world. The answers, as revealed in the film, came as a shock.

“We’re undertaking an unplanned social experiment that is literally changing our way of life” says Dick. What he discovered was that for most Australians, population growth was most likely means a lower standard of living. And despite the pressure it’s placing on our infrastructure and environment, no one really has a plan to deal with the massive increase in population we’ve been experiencing in recent years.

“This is the most important issue I have ever undertaken in my life,” says Dick. “I won’t rest until we have a proper plan in place that informs Australians just how many people we can sustainably support in this country.”

The shipwreck of Mahdia was found by Greek sponge fishermen off the coast of Tunisia in June 1907. The shipwreck near the modern town of Mahdia is dated about the 80s BC, or even later. In a series of underwater campaigns a large number of items were recovered and placed on display at the Musée National du Bardo, Tunis. The greater parts of the sculptures were salvaged between 1907 and 1913 by French archaeologist Alfred Merlin, at that time Director of Antiquities in the Protectorate of Tunisia. Further survey work on the site was done by a team led by Mensun Bound, but unfortunately no further excavations have been possible.

Each episode of the series follows the same basic path, first examining the childhood events that may have pre-determined the future course. From there, psychiatrists, historians and other experts add historical context, forensic and archaeological evidence, and a whole range of other interesting titbits to paint a more complete picture. The “Behaving Badly psychograph” is also used to map the personalities of each of the series’ notorious personalities, comparing them both against one another, and against more contemporary villains such as members of Adolph Hitler’s trusted inner circle, drug lords, and other baddies. Ancients Behaving Badly is great stuff for history buffs, but the content is certainly not for all ages. Not only would younger children be bored by much of the “talking head” content, they would likely also be scared by much of the graphic imagery and detailed descriptions of some of the more nasty acts that were committed by the series’ subjects. The series does an above average job of pulling together CG images, contemporary footage and interviews, graphic novel-style re-enactments and other content into solid 44-minute packages.

The first television series to attempt a comprehensive account of North America’s wildlife and wild places. Land of the Eagle turns the clock back to reveal the continent as it used to be, hundreds of years ago, a story told by the people who lived on it, charted it and shaped it - the Native Americans and the European explorers and settlers. This eight-part series explores the great diversity of the continent, revealing the bonds between human history and natural history as it travels from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Along the way, it traverses the rugged Canadian wilderness, the swampy Everglades, the sweeping Great Plains, the majestic Rockies, the arid, hostile deserts, and Alaska - the last wild frontier of America. Together, the eight programmes reveal the way that the nature of this ‘untamed’ land shaped the lives and fortunes of those who ventured into its vast interior. Through their writings and diaries, Peter Crawford’s award-winning series recreates the landscapes and wildlife of North America at the time when the first Europeans came to this ’new world’. DVD Released October 31, 2006

From Chesapeake Bay, the largest and most prolific estuary in North America, to the seemingly endless deciduous woods of the Appalachian Mountains, lies a rich tapestry of natural habitats, unparalleled in Europe. Yet many of the colonists starved to death.

Trade rivalries eventually pushed the French south. Following the great Mississippi River, they laid claim to a land on behalf of their King - Louisiana.

The vast Spanish territory of Florida once stretched as far as the Mississippi. The wealth of this land was its wildlife, which thrived in sub - tropical swamps.

Beyond the Mississippi, the explorers found the trees giving way to immense grasslands: the rolling prairies ablaze with a mass of flowers.

The explorers searching for a safe trail through the Rocky Mountains found themselves locked in a maze of steep wooded valleys, rushing torrents, and harsh climates threatening storms and avalanches.

The Southwest of the continent is mostly desert - harsh, hot, inhospitable landscapes where plants and animals have developed very special means of survival.

Alaska, the northernmost mainland of America was the gateway for the native peoples that, 10,000 years ago, came from Asia to the New World.

California’s plant and animal communities were unrivalled elsewhere on the North American continent. But Americans soon began to realize the province’s natural resources were not inexhaustible.

With media headlines repeatedly warning us of debris falling from the skies, orbital debris, or “space junk,” has finally risen to the forefront of social consciousness. But what is space junk? How did it get there? Just how big (and serious) is the problem? Space Junk, narrated by Academy Award Nominee Tom Wilkinson, is the first movie to explore the exponentially expanding ring of debris that threatens the safety of our planet’s orbits. Director Melissa Butts takes us soaring, from the stunning depths of Meteor Crater to an unprecedented view of our increasingly crowded orbits, 22,000 miles above earth.
