Auto fanatic Mark Evans is heading to his workshop once more as the eighth ‘…Is Born’ series gets under way.

Mark and his sidekick Pete reunite to restore the ultimate English sports car, the MGB, as an MG is born.

First unveiled at the 1962 London Motor Show, the MGB fast became an icon, proving that a sports car could be both economical and fun and it remains the most successful sports car MG ever made.

It became a classic in its own right, also becoming the most popular British car ever to be sold in America.

Across just 10 episodes Mark completely strips and repairs or replaces every single component on the car.

He fully restores and up-rates the original B Series 1800cc engine, cuts out and replaces the sills, the boot, the floor, all four wings and both doors, finally painting the car in ‘James Bond Silver’ and refurbishing the interior in sumptuous red leather.

Mark Evans embarks on a brand new project, aiming to transform a 1973 Chrome- bumpered MGB Roadster from an unloved rust-bucket into a pristine classic car.

In the first programme Mark tracks down a suitable car for restoration in an old chicken shed in Surrey. The deal done, it’s back to his workshop to start the strip down.

In the second episode of An MG is Born, Mark strips the engine down step by step, starts work on the body-work and takes a trip to the Heritage factory where, 20 years after production stopped, new body shells are still being made.

Programme 3 sees Mark continuing to restore his 1973 MGB. While the body is away being bead blasted, it’s the turn of the sills and rear axle as Mark replaces the 3-part sill structure, strips and refurbishes the rear axle and dismantles the differential.

With the body of Mark’s MGB back from the bead blasters, it’s easy to see how much restoration work is now needed. New wings are fitted and a new steering rack fitted to the body. Mark also visits a specialist engineering company who are refurbishing the over-drive unit to find out just how it works.

More metalwork as Mark repairs the shell and fits new panels. It’s a long hard slog. Meanwhile the engine is being overhauled with a rebore. By the end of the programme the engine is rebuilt and the shell has had its first coat of paint. Phew!

The MGB rebuild starts in earnest. The rear axle is fitted to the shell withe new parabolic front springs. The front cross member is fitted and the car is finally back on its wheels. The engine, gearbox and overdrive units are fitted.

Mark fits a new heater, but it’s not without its problems. The pedal box is fitted and the clutch master cylinder is overhauled.

Whilst Pete prepares the wheels for spraying Mark and Les continue to fit the braking system. The handbrake causes a few head scratching moments and Les gets to use the new lathe to skim the brake drums.

Finally some paint is applied to the wheels.

Mark strips down his seats, door panels and centre console and takes their bare bones to the seat surgeons, Yvonne, Sandra and Ellen for re-covering in luxurious red leather.

Mark fits the quarter lights and winding windows to the doors - an easy job turns into a nightmare. It only gets worse when he tries to fit the new windscreen.

Then it’s on to the hood frame and the new mohair hood amazingly fitting uses the same principles as a face lift.

We find Mark glass bead blasting the engine inlet manifold - gorgeous. He goes on to fit it together with the new custom-made, ceramic coated, stainless steel, tubular exhaust headers. But there’s a problem with the rest of the exhaust. After some head scratching a solution is found. A quick tip on how to make your own gaskets is followed by the complete rebuild of the fuel pump. Mark converts it to electronic operation.

Three hours are wasted when Mark accidentally trashes the gleaming radiator that he has just finished refurbishing. But another is substituted and the race is on to get the engine plumbed, fuelled and wired for its first fire up before the end of the show.

Mark is behind schedule so it’s a frantic sprint for the finish - he has all the lights and shiny bits to fit as well as the boot, bonnet and badges.

Finally the MGB sees the light of day - and it’s a beauty!

Alan Yentob presents a series documenting the history of primetime television in America, from the age of mass television in the 1950s to the present.

This opening episode traces the trajectory of the archetypal American dad from the breadwinning patriarch of the 1950s to the angst-ridden multitasker of the 21st century. From the cast iron certainties and benign omniscience of Jim X and Andy Griffith, to the crippling anxieties and bad choices Tony Soprano and Homer Simpson, the programme takes an in-depth view of American masculinity over six decades. Featuring interviews with creators, stars, writers and producers including Ron Howard, David Lynch, Rob Reiner, David Chase, John Hamm and James L. Brooks among others.

When America sits down to watch primetime television it expects to see more than stereotypes and stock characters going through the motions. Primetime viewers want to see the United States of Television - in all its individuality, diversity, eccentricity and quirkiness. That’s how some of the most high-risk characters in the primetime crowd are born. These are the awkward squad - the ones who can’t, or won’t, or aren’t allowed to fit in: nerds, geeks, freaks, rebels, outsiders and misfits. Characters like Gomez Addams in The Addams Family, Louie DePalma in Taxi, George Costanza in Seinfeld and practically the whole cast of Glee. But though they may march to a different drummer, in primetime they become ‘one of us’ - and we, whether we like it not, become one of them.

A look at the evolution of women on TV. A host of stars, creators, writers and producers reflect on the dramatic social changes that transformed the iconic homemaker of the 1950s into the independent woman of today, struggling with a slew of contemporary issues. Mainstream TV was slow to reflect women’s economic, sexual and domestic situation in the 60s and 70s, but non- conformists like Lucille Ball stepped into the breach to blaze a trail for other characters who altered the perception of how women were expected to behave: Mary Richards, Murphy Brown, Roseanne, and the women of Sex and the City. With contributions from Edie Falco, Roseanne Barr, Mary Tyler Moore, Sarah Jessica Parker and Sandra Oh among others.

Alan concludes the series with a look at the crusading heroes who seek truth, protect the innocent and do the right thing - the cops, the cowboys, the doctors and the spooks. The line separating the hero from the villain has often been a fine one in American history, and the ambiguities that lie at the heart of heroism have inspired some of primetime’s most popular and long- running shows, including MASH, The X Files, 24, NYPD Blue and The Wire. From the white-hat versus black-hat pieties of the 1950s to the gritty dilemmas of the post 9/11 world, this episode talks to the stars, creators, writers and producers who have tried to ‘do the right thing’ for audiences. There are interviews with Hugh Laurie (House), Alan Alda (Hawkeye in MASH), Gillian Anderson (Scully in The X-Files), Dennis Franz (Sipowicz in NYPD Blue) and Michael K Williams (Omar in The Wire).

Beneath the America we think we know lies a nation hidden from view - a nomadic nation, living on the roads, the rails and in the wild open spaces. In its deserts, forests, mountain ranges and on the plains, a huge population of modern nomads pursues its version of the American dream - to live free from the world of careers, mortgages and the white picket fence. When British writer Richard Grant moved to the USA more than 20 years ago it wasn’t just a change of country. He soon found himself in a world of travellers and the culture of roadside America - existing alongside, but separate from, conventional society. In this film he takes to the road again, on a journey without destination. In a series of encounters and unplanned meetings, Richard is guided by his own instincts and experiences - and the serendipity of the road. Travelling with loners and groups, he encounters the different ’tribes' of nomads as he journeys across the deserts of America’s south west.

Melvyn Bragg travels from Oklahoma to California to examine the enduring legacy of the Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck. In novels such as The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men and Cannery Row, Steinbeck gave voice to ordinary people who were battling poverty, drought and homelessness. Travelling the famous Route 66 from the midwest to the Pacific coast, Melvyn assesses how relevant Steinbeck’s work is today. He visits the site of the 1930’s dust bowl in Oklahoma; the California orchards where bloody political battles were fought between migrant labourers and growers; and the Monterey coastline where Steinbeck developed his ideas on ecology. Melvyn makes a case for Steinbeck as one of the great voices of American literature.

Documentary telling the story of Hidcote - the most influential English garden of the 20th century - and Lawrence Johnston, the enigmatic genius behind it. Hidcote Manor in Gloucestershire was the first garden ever taken on by the National Trust, who in a decade-long project completed in 2011 spent 3.5 million pounds in a major restoration programme. This included researching Johnston’s original vision, which uncovered the compelling story of how a secretive and self-taught horticulturalist created such an iconic garden. Glyn Jones - head gardener at Hidcote - made it his mission to discover as much about the man as possible to reveal how, in the early 20th century, he created a garden that has influenced designers all over the world.

Historian Ruth Goodman and archaeologists Peter Ginn and Tom Pinfold turn the clock back over 500 years to run a farm at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum in West Sussex exactly as it would have been in 1500, during the reign of the first Tudor King, Henry VII.

The farm team tackles domestic tasks, from lighting fires with flint, making meals with depleted crops during the Hunger Gap and using a tread wheel to fetch water from the well. Peter and Tom’s first job is to move the sheep to fresh grass. Ruth makes a tallow light out of rushes and sheep fat, cooks the favourite Tudor dish of Pottage and performs the ritual of laying the table, an act full of Christian symbolism.

Wool production - known as ’the jewel in the realm’ of the English economy, it accounted for around half the country’s wealth. The monasteries capitalised on this massively, owning flocks that numbered thousands of sheep and keeping a virtual monopoly on the export of wool to foreign countries. Monastic tenant farmers were second to none when it came to exploiting the huge commercial potential of sheep farming.

The team focus on preparing staple foods of everyday Tudor life - bread and ale. With the monasteries owning much of the farmland, Ruth, Peter and Tom are well aware of the importance of praying for a successful harvest. They join their fellow parishioners in the tradition of ‘beating the bounds’ - circling the parish boundary while praying for a good yield. Peter and Tom join pig farmer Neal Careswell in weaning the piglets from their mother. Meanwhile, Ruth is in the woods trying to harvest wild yeast from the air for the bread- making, and Peter goes to a local windmill to help with the production of wheatflour. Tom also visits a foundry to help cast a new bell, while Peter helps harvest beeswax used to make candles.

The monasteries’ lands covered a variety of terrain, which would need to be exploited by the tenant farmer to raise income for themselves and the monastery. Lead was an important building material and Tom and Peter mine their own, using Tudor techniques while Ruth makes a stained glass window. On the rivers owned by the monastery, tenant farmers could rent fishing rights and Ruth makes baskets to catch eels in. Back on the farm, the team learn how aspirational tenant farmers would have decorated their farmhouses. Ruth produces a wall hanging and Tom experiments with a camera obscura, while Peter sees if his pigs are pregnant. The team’s hard work is rewarded with a fine meal of eels in their newly decorated home.

With no other provision for the poor, monasteries played a key role in providing welfare for those in need. But funding charity also meant extending hospitality to wealthy donors. The monastery restores a corrody room which would have been granted to an elderly worker as a form of pension. The room needs a new floor so limestone is gathered and roasted to make lime putty. Ruth is in charge of the home comforts and harvests rushes from the river to make a mattress. The Abbot is planning a big feast to entertain a patron - a good way to encourage the wealthier members of society to make large donations. Tom oversees the production of a book to give the patron as a gift, while Ruth lends a hand in the kitchen to produce some lavish dishes for the Abbot’s table, and Peter distils wine into brandy. There is also a lesson in Tudor etiquette for Tom and Peter before the feast is served.

They bring in the barley and celebrate with a harvest feast. Ruth makes salt so the team can preserve produce for the winter. The team also moves their recreation of monastic farming conditions to the end of King Henry VII’s reign, when his son, Henry VIII, banished the Church of Rome and replaced it with the Church of England. Known as the Dissolution, this period would see the skills and crafts once monopolized by the monasteries dispersed. This sees Peter learn how to carve stone and make floor tiles, whilst Ruth makes some tudor medicines. The series ends with a celebration of all of the hard work undertaken over the course of the seasons. The team put on a mystery play to mark the occasion, whilst Tom makes fireworks with an alchemist as he prepares to take to the stage as Beelzebub.
