Series charting the development of Britain’s national electricity grid and how it sparked modern Britain into being - transforming our landscape, our politics and our lives.

At the heart of Britain sits something so all pervasive we don’t even notice it’s there - the national electricity grid. This three-part series charts how our lives got wired and the impact electrification has had. The opening part takes us from the epic construction of the first grid in the 1920s and 30s to the challenge of making sure there is power at the flick of a switch today. Using rare archive and vivid personal accounts it reveals the heroic efforts, architectural masterpieces and engineering achievements behind the real power map of Britain.

From hoovers to hi-fis, from electric lifts to intensive care units - where would we be if we couldn’t plug in to the national electricity grid? The second part of this history of the grid explores how switching on has transformed every part of our lives over the last 60 years. Colour archive reveals a time when having an electric cooker was a status symbol and ‘plugged in’ music was revolutionary. But the grid didn’t just mean gadgets - it has been central to creating a consumer society and shaping the contemporary city.

Miners, nuclear scientists, politicians, environmentalists and even the City have all wrestled for control of the national electricity grid and the power that it has brought. The final film in this history of the grid charts how it has been the battleground for conflicts that have changed and shaped Britain. Key players from the miners’ strikes reveal why the industrial action of the 70s and 80s had such different impacts on electricity supply. The film also uncovers how Britain lost her lead in the field of nuclear power.

On the eve of the German federal elections (22nd Sep 2013), Andrew Marr looks at the enigmatic Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel. She is the most important politician in Europe and the most powerful woman in the world. Yet she has been criticized by some for her lack of charisma and accused by others of trying to turn Europe into a Greater Germany. Andrew Marr delves into her childhood and background to discover what has shaped her political vision and style. Growing up in East Germany, the paranoid state at the heart of the Communist Eastern Bloc, then becoming a research scientist, she only entered politics in her mid-thirties after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Her political journey has been marked by caution and compromise - but with occasional flashes of ruthlessness and an unyielding commitment to European Union. In this film, Andrew Marr lifts the veil on a very unusual politician.

An epic account of the events that shaped Britain, from the death of Queen Victoria to the end of the Second World War

In the first of a six-part series, Andrew Marr revisits Britain at the dawn of the 20th century. He finds the country mourning the death of Queen Victoria; fighting an intractable war against the Boers in South Africa; enjoying the bawdy pleasures of music hall; and worrying about the physical and moral strength of the working class.

Andrew Marr continues his rollicking account of the early 20th century, placing the era as a time of seeming innocence captured in children’s classics such as The Wind in the Willows. But we shouldn’t be fooled: “Edwardian Britain has been covered by a golden, dappled glow,” Marr tells us, reclining in a punt on a golden, dappled river. Yet “Dark, angry storm clouds were brewing.” The big storm was the First World War, but before that there were other rumblings - dockers’ strikes and battles over women’s suffrage. The jittery archive clip of Emily Wilding Davison running in front of the king’s horse at Epsom is shocking to watch.

Propped up by familiar but endlessly haunting footage from the trenches, Andrew Marr tackles the Great War and its repercussions in the third part of his captivating history series. His authoritative, newshound tone and an unfussy script help make this accessible but never simplistic. Marr balances a behind-closed doors examination of Asquith’s cabinet (and later, Lloyd George’s parliamentary “dictatorship”) with a look at life on the Western Front and how working in munitions factories changed women’s lives forever. We’re also reminded that the German zeppelin-bombing raids on London, though they killed far fewer than the Blitz, were arguably more horrifying. People had only just become used to planes, when they were confronted with 500-foot balloons, nicknamed “Baby Killers”, “lobbing death”.

The fourth film in Andrew Marr’s epic six-part series charting the events that shaped Britain. In the 1920s, Imperial Britannia slid from view and a more modern Britain tried everything new, as a great age of experiment arrived in politics, writing, art, sex and drugs. The decade saw a post-war housing boom, the birth of radio broadcasting and the creation of the BBC, but the General Strike and the Wall Street Crash brought Britain’s roaring twenties to a dramatic close.

The fifth film in Andrew Marr’s epic six-part series charting the events that shaped Britain. A climate of betrayal, political extremism and unemployment pervaded 1930s Britain, with the country descending into chaos following the financial crash on Wall Street. Modern Britain had one eye on the future and one nostalgic eye on the past, but with Fascists on the march in Europe, our reticent nature was put to to the test, and the country finally chose confrontation over appeasement.

The final film in Andrew Marr’s epic six-part series charting the events that shaped Britain. Marr concludes his series with a vivid account of Britain in the Second World War, beginning with an examination of the events at Dunkirk. Marr finds some surprising twists to legendary stories, including the fact that the Battle of Britain was not simply a story of reckless bravery, but also a one of lethally efficient command and control.

The Great British Story: A People’s History is a documentary series presented by Michael Wood. He travels around the country as he explores the United Kingdom’s remarkable past, from the perspective of ordinary people. It’s wide- ranging, beautifully filmed and a bit sentimental, but also hugely informative and full of good humour. Nobody does this sort of thing better.

Michael Wood explores the nation’s past, working with local communities to tap into their extraordinary knowledge and archives. He begins with the period spanning the end of Roman times to the coming of the Anglo Saxons, travelling to a communal dig in Suffolk, reading Roman letters on Tyneside, viewing Dark Age sculptures in Govan, Glasgow, and seeing the earliest manuscript of Bede’s History of the English, written in 731.

Michael Wood continues his history of Britain, exploring how the nations' individual identities emerged following the Dark Ages. He travels to Old Deer in Aberdeenshire, Dalriada kingdom in Co Antrim and Sedgefield in Norfolk, where community projects are helping the locals find a few clues to their past. He also recounts the arrival of the Vikings, and the impact made by the Norse invaders, with people from Ireland, the Wirral, Govan and York.

Michael Wood’s history of Britain reaches the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest, asking what life was like for the Anglo-Saxon peasantry in the decades following 1066. To find out he joins the excavation of a castle at Mount Bures, Essex, and a community dig in the Suffolk village of Lord Melford. Moving on, he looks at the beginnings of trade and industry in Bristol, Wales and the Black Country, explores the battle for rights enshrined in the Magna Carta and considers how the nation was affected by the Barons' War and first Scottish War of Independence.

Michael Wood’s history of Britain reaches the 14th century, when the Black Death killed more than half the population. He examines local records to track the plague across the UK, and investigates how it led to the Peasants’ Revolt, an uprising by agricultural workers. The 15th century saw the rise of a new middle class - Michael visits the oldest primary school in Britain - from 1437

  • to find out how education played a major role in people’s changing fortunes. Along the way, he also crawls down a sewer in Lavenham, Suffolk, for a spot of hands-on history, while letters from a Norfolk village provide a medieval woman’s take on love, marriage and men.

As the second half of the series gets under way, he examines how Henry VIII’s founding of the Church of England in 1534, followed by the dissolution of the Catholic monasteries, transformed the country’s religious landscape, setting the tone for a century of sweeping change. He traces the rise of industry and commerce in Bristol and Scotland, discovers evidence of one of Britain’s first black communities, and finds an artefact that sheds light on the Elizabethan conquest of Ireland - before explaining how a radical religious movement in Nottinghamshire laid the foundations for transatlantic migration.

Michael Wood explores how civil war split Britain during the 17th century, beginning his journey in Dublin, where he examines artefacts of the 1641 Irish Rebellion, before travelling to Co Down to find out about the Ulster-Scots. Back in England, he explains how communities in the West Midlands were divided by the violent conflict between Parliament and the Crown, and visits a local history project that is unearthing evidence from a Cornish battlefield. He also charts the origins of revolutionary movements including the Levellers and Diggers, which he believes laid the foundations for modern British democracy.

Michael Wood explores the many ways in which the Industrial Revolution transformed society during the 19th century, as towns and cities grew while the rural population shrank and Britain became the world’s first industrial power. He discovers how this economic shift affected workers, visiting communities in Dorset and Wiltshire, as well as the site of a former slum in Manchester, and investigates the roles of slavery and colonialism in driving British expansion. He also travels to mines and factories that thrived during the period, and learns how the ideas of Enlightenment thinkers revolutionised the way people viewed the world.

Michael Wood concludes his survey of the past 2,000 years of British history by charting the dramatic changes seen during the 20th and 21st centuries. He assesses the impact that two world wars had on communities across the country, explores the spread of multiculturalism over the past 50 years and charts Britain’s transition into a post-industrial economy. Finally, he assesses the future of the United Kingdom, and explains what he believes British citizens can learn from their shared history.

Nelson famously signalled the Battle of Trafalgar with the words: ‘England expects that every man will do his duty’. But of the 18,000 sailors fighting for King and Country, 1,400 were not British, with 25 different nationalities in all press-ganged into serving the British King. By analysing the records of warship HMS Bellerophon, this fresh and action-packed account of the famous day reveals their fascinating story.

Documentary evidence proves the Navy recruited hundreds of black sailors, many of them ex-slaves from the West Indies and America. For many, the Royal Navy was the world’s first equal opportunities employer, offering freedom, equal pay, and the chance for life-changing promotion.

This film pays tribute to the diverse nationalities that sailed on 21 October 1805, united not by patriotism, but by a unique opportunity for performance- related pay. The Admiralty promised every man at Trafalgar - irrespective of race, creed or colour - a fair share of any captured enemy ships. If they defeated the entire Combined Fleet, even the humblest sailor might become the equivalent of a millionaire.

Between these brave foreigners and a potential fortune, stood the bloodiest battle in naval history, a great storm and the mortal danger of fire, drowning or shipwreck.

Biologist George McGavin goes on a journey around the British Isles to show us the extraordinary little things that are vital to our land. With a revolutionary new microscope camera seven thousand times more powerful than the human eye, George reveals the surprising beauty of Britain close-up. Caterpillars’ feet have hooks that anchor them to leaves even upside down, the wings of butterflies and moths are a kaleidoscope of colourful scales that keep them safe from predators, bee stings have barbs that make them stick deep in your skin, and feathers have thousands of hooks that zip together keeping birds airborne. Our cities are full of invisible miniature life too: millions of cute ‘water bears’ graze pavement mosses, and our homes have legions of dust mites scavenging for food in our carpets. This is Britain as you’ve never seen it before.

Paleontologist Professor Richard Fortey embarks on a quest to discover the extraordinary lives of rock pool creatures. To help explore this unusual environment he is joined by some of the UK’s leading marine biologists in a dedicated laboratory at the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth. Here and on the beach in various locations around the UK, startling behaviour is revealed and new insights are given into how these animals cope with intertidal life. Many popular rock pool species have survived hundreds of millions of years of Earth’s history, but humans may be their biggest challenge yet.
