Featuring glorious underwater photography, this series reveals our native waters as being every bit as dramatic, colourful, and surprising as the oceans of the world

In the first programme of the series, the team uncovers the world of the giants that reside in and on our western seas. A few metres off the Cornish shore, the team study Britain’s largest fish, the basking shark. Despite the fact that they grow up to ten metres long, little is known about them, which makes effective conservation very difficult. In an exceptional encounter, the team is surrounded by up to 12 sharks as they feed on microscopic plankton. Their shark expedition then takes them north to the Isle of Man. Working alongside local scientists, they take shark DNA samples using a kitchen scourer in order to assess the genetic health and long-term fitness of these great leviathans. The team also runs into a giant swarm of jellyfish. In the waters of South Wales, Tooni encounters an invading army of giant spiny spider crabs. These creatures boast a leg span of over a metre across, and Tooni reveals that they come into the shallow waters every year to find a mate. On Lundy Island off the Devon coast, Frank assesses whether the island’s protected underwater No Take Zone could be used as a template to establish a nationwide network of marine nature reserves right around our island. Frank also reveals how Great Britain still relies on the sea to import goods. He boards one of the biggest transatlantic container ships in the world, The Atlantic Companion, as the vast ship brings its cargo into Liverpool Docks. In treacherous waters off the Isles of Scilly, Paul dives the largest shipwreck in British waters to assess the legacy of the worst ecological disaster to affect our shores so far; the ill-fated Torrey Canyon oil tanker.

In the second programme in the series, explorer Paul Rose, marine biologist Tooni Mahto and maritime journalist Frank Pope explore the wild seas around Scotland. The team travel to Bass Rock, one of the largest gannet colonies in the world. They are there to try and find out why when most British seabird populations are in decline, the northern gannet is bucking the trend. Tooni helps scientists who are using GPS trackers to discover the extraordinary distances gannets can fly in the search for food. Paul goes beneath the waves to witness the amazing diving ability of Britain’s largest seabird. Tooni joins a scientist in St Andrews Bay in search of the bottlenose dolphin to find out why dolphins have unique signature whistles - could they be names as we know them? She also takes Paul on a spectacular night dive at St Abbs in search of the amazing sea creatures that fluoresce beyond our visual spectrum. And intriguingly, this discovery has been used to help study cancerous cells. Expedition leader, Paul Rose, meets the hidden heroes of the Royal Navy. They are on a special clearance mission around Garvie Island at Cape Wrath. The Navy divers go underwater clearing live 1,000lb unexploded bombs dropped by aircraft during training exercises. These are modern and extremely powerful weapons that must be detonated with explosives - underwater. We have over 25,000 wrecks around the British Isles. These wrecks are a rich archaeological record of our maritime heritage, but sadly they are being damaged by trawlers, souvenir hunters and the forces of nature. Frank and Paul Rose go to the Sound of Mull, to see first-hand what can be done to preserve the history locked away in these relics.

This time on Britain’s Secret Seas, the team set out to explore the waters off our eastern coastline, which are constantly pounded by the raw power of the waves. These are the shallowest waters off our shores but over the centuries they have been some of our most productive, providing oil and gas as well as fish for our tables. But things are changing in the North Sea and our team discover a sea full of surprises. On the Farne Islands, they come face to face with England’s largest colony of grey seals to find out what makes them such extraordinary divers and successful hunters. Grey seals can dive for over forty minutes on a single breath - the team find out how they do it and why they seem to be coping with the changing conditions on the east coast far better than the harbour seal. Elsewhere, Frank looks at the newest form of energy in the North Sea, at a wind farm off the Norfolk coast, and Tooni examines what effect the wind turbines are having on marine life. Paul uncovers the intriguing history of light vessels among the sandbanks of the Thames Estuary; and Tooni gets to the bottom of a bumper lobster harvest in the port of Bridlington. Paul dives with a shoal of fish that soon transform into a school when he starts to behave as if he were a predator. To find out how they are able to achieve such synchronised motion and why they suddenly change direction, he joins a scientist who has created a plastic imposter - Robofish.

In the final programme of the series, explorer Paul Rose, marine biologist Tooni Mahto and underwater archaeologist Frank Pope explore our busy southern shores. As one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, our southern seas are littered with wrecks. Outside Poole harbour, the team join an archaeological excavation of a mysterious 17th century ship. Bearing incredibly ornate carvings of a merman, Frank reveals this is one of the most important underwater discoveries since the Mary Rose. Paul joins the dive team working on the wreck to try to discover where this ship came from. But it’s a race against time as the timbers are being destroyed; Tooni wants to find out why. Frank and Tooni examine how we balance the needs of marine life with those of people when the two come into conflict. Studland Bay in Dorset is home to a thriving population of spiny seahorses living amongst the rare eelgrass beds. Only identified as breeding in the area seven years ago, the intensive use of the bay, boat moorings and pleasure boats’ anchors are threatening the seahorses fragile eelgrass habitat. Paul dives two wrecks in the search of the mighty conger eel to find out if, when he comes face to face with one, these incredible beasts will live up to their fearsome reputation. As the tourists hit the roller coaster and dodgems on Brighton pier, they know little of the wonder beneath them. Tooni dives underneath Brighton pier to reveal one of the best places on the south coast to see a great variety of our native marine life. Out in Lyme Bay, Frank dives the wreck of an experimental WWII submarine.

Britain and the Sea David Dimbleby takes to his wooden sailing boat to explore Britain’s rich maritime heritage.

David Dimbleby sails the south west coast of England - along the coast of Devon and Cornwall - in his own sailing boat, Rocket, exploring maritime history, art and architecture as he goes. Caught up in stormy weather, he makes it to safety in the nick of time, to tell the story of Sir Francis Drake and a fantastic array of adventurers, explorers, pirates and smugglers. It’s also a chance for David to enjoy some of Britain’s most beautiful coastline and turn his hand to a bit of art himself. David also gingerly submits himself to one of the oldest maritime art forms of all - the art of the tattoo!

David Dimbleby continues his voyage round Britain, sailing his boat Rocket along the south east coast from Hampshire to Kent. This was the front line coast, the edge of Britain essential to its defence and the first point of attack for invasion forces. From the great battleships of Nelson to the sea forts of Henry VIII, this is a story that embraces Britain’s darkest and most heroic moments.

This third episode traces the crucial importance of the sea to Britain’s trade and to individual livelihoods of coastal communities. Joined on this leg of his epic sail by his son Fred, David follows the trade routes of the west coast of Scotland along the monumental channels that cut through the Romantic Highlands and brought wealth and prosperity to the heart of Scotland. The journey starts at Craobh Haven and takes David along the Crinan Canal, around the Isle of Bute and up the River Clyde towards Glasgow.

Having examined the sea as a source of exploration, defence and trade, David Dimbleby explores how it emerged as a source of pleasure, Punch and Judy and sand sculpture. Starting at Gorleston-on-Sea, David explores the creation of a seaside holiday culture that remains uniquely British to this day. Sailing down the Suffolk and Essex coasts and into the Thames, David also shows how the sea became an irresistible subject for our most celebrated artists and architects, before finally docking in the very heart of British maritime power: Greenwich.

Ian Mortimer transports viewers back to Elizabethan England and reveals, in vivid detail, a living, breathing Tudor world. Viewers learn how ordinary Tudor housewives turned plants into medicine, how the middle classes kept themselves clean using linen cloths, how the poor made pottage, how cooks of the rich devised recipes for new ingredients, and how Tudors learned to read and write.

This episode he reveals the life of the common people of the Elizabethan age. Whilst most people have images of courtiers, lavish palaces and fine clothes, the reality is that most of the country is extremely poor. Ian also looks at the religious controversies threatening to pull the county apart, as well as the astoundingly cruel attitudes that were common at the time.

This episode he introduces the world of the Elizabethan rich and privileged. Money alone is not enough to blend in with the Royal Court. A complex code of dress, greetings, behaviour and much more exists and even something as simple as an out of date outfit may result in exile from high society. It is literally a cut-throat world, where spies circle the great and good and one false word could cost everything. The wealthy also had one problem all of their own; the Queen herself - and bearing the cost of a Royal progress.

Dr Ian Mortimer travels through the world of a new and upwardly mobile section of Elizabethan society - the middle class. In a groundbreaking new way of exploring history, Ian takes viewers on a present-tense journey through this golden age of English history. Along the way he visits Stratford-Upon-Avon and reveals how urbanisation improves ordinary people’s lives. He drops in at Shakespeare’s school to uncover how education transforms society and explores how this age of discovery helps spur a scientific revolution that creates a new world. Ian also transports viewers to the electrifying world of Elizabethan theatre at Shakespeare’s Globe and tells the dramatic story of how English imperial ambitions leads to the Armada and the threat of Spanish invasion.

Filmmaker Rupert Murray takes us on a journey into the heart of climate scepticism to examine the key arguments against man-made global warming and to try to understand the people who are making them. Do they have the evidence that we are heating up the atmosphere or are they taking a grave risk with our future by dabbling in highly complicated science they don’t fully understand? Where does the truth lie and how are we, the people, supposed to decide? The film features Britain’s pre-eminent sceptic Lord Christopher Monckton as he tours the world broadcasting his message to the public and politicians alike. Can he convince them and Murray that there is nothing to worry about?

Using “virtual reality” computer simulations, social journalist James Burke traces the Earth’s history of ice ages and warming trends, and presents several possible scenarios caused by the greenhouse effect during the 1990s to 2050. The video release consists of two parts, “The Fatal Flower” and “Secret of the Deep”.

The first part is based on history before 1990. It theorizes and tells facts about the effects global weather has had on the history of mankind and how some historical events happened also because of natural temperature change.

The second part speculates about the future and especially the ways in which we could overcome the bad effects of global weather.

Three Programmes following the survival of the Polar Bear, Penguin and other inhabitants of these sub-zero lands. The Arctic and Antarctic regions comprise the most severe environments anywhere on Earth. Yet both regions are filled with animals, from microscopic sea life to the largest of the whales who visit the regions seasonally. Migrating birds and mammals make their way northward every spring to feast on the bounty of the brief Arctic summer. Penguins, sea mammals, albatrosses and other pelagic birds make their way to Antarctica for summertime feeding and breeding and birthing. These lives of these animals are fascinating as we see how well-adapted they are for life in these extreme environments.

Only the strong survive at the top of the world. Stalk the Arctic ice with its fiercest predator, the polar bear, as it prowls one of the most forbidding places on the planet - a hidden kingdom of magnificent creatures. Armed with a keen sense of smell and backed up by 800 kilos of fur and fangs, the polar bear stands alone at the top of the food chain. Yet many other hunters manage to survive in and around harsh Arctic waters from the savvy arctic fox to the massive, whiskered walrus. The Arctic ice is revealed as a place of danger and drama where animals are stranded on frozen waters, trapped between moving sheets of ice, and caught in the struggle to survive.

Discover the fate of a polar bear and her twin cubs at the icy top of the world. National Geographic cameras follow the family during a two-year Arctic odyssey filled with touching and unforgettable moments, many never before filmed. Watch in wonder as curious cubs emerge from their den for the first time after a three-month hibernation. Go ‘ice-crashing’ with the polar bear family as they hunt for seals. Feel the tension as the mother protects her cubs from a hostile male, one of many dangers lurking on the ice floes. Just half of all cubs survive beyond their first year and this polar bear family needs the mother’s finely tuned instincts and luck to beat the odds.

In the frozen wilderness of Antarctica, where oceans ice over and just staying alive is an achievement, one creature has perfected the art of survival - the emperor penguin. Eons of evolution have built an animal superbly adapted to the howling gales and sub-zero temperatures but the emperor may have finally met its match. Parts of Antarctica are warming, giving birth to huge icebergs and the consequences could be catastrophic for this majestic animal. In a place where all life is touched by the ice, it is a dramatic shift. Explore this region from its inhabitant’s perspective, utilising Crittercam technology. By better understanding these amazing animals, researchers can help prepare for their future, as the balance of life in the Antarctic continues to change.
