A privileged view into the lives of a cast of Hebridean animals, narrated by Ewan McGregor

Scotland’s Hebrides are Europe’s final frontier against the wild and unpredictable Atlantic Ocean. This landmark wildlife series, narrated by Ewan McGregor, introduces an unforgettable wild animal cast struggling to survive here on these Islands on the Edge.

In this first episode, autumn arrives with a vengeance. Young swallows, otters and grey seals face up to the biggest storms and highest tides of the year as they move towards independence. Tens of thousands of geese and swans arrive for the winter only to find predatory white-tailed eagles hungry and ready to hunt them. And on the Isle of Rum, a mighty stag faces the ultimate challenge in a battle to decide the true Monarch of the Glen.

In most years winter is the hardest time in the Hebrides but once in a generation the spring turns out to be harder still. White-tailed eagles, harbour seals, hares, pine martens and short-eared owls all struggle to raise their families as the islands are hit by the biggest storm in living memory.

As the wild weather finally passes and the seas warm, the story moves beneath the waves to reveal the arrival of Scotland’s ocean juggernauts - basking sharks.

Of all the Islands on the Edge, the Outer Hebrides are the most exposed to the full power of the Atlantic. Despite this, the wildlife here is the most spectacular in Europe. On the outlying islands, seabirds rush to feed up their chicks while avoiding the murderous intentions of ‘bonxies’ - predatory skuas with a taste for young puffins.

On the low-lying Uists, acres of beautiful meadows burst into flower as summer finally arrives. But this is a year of drought and Atlantic salmon find themselves trapped in the sea pools and unable to move into the river systems. Yet again the creatures of the Hebrides must find ways to survive the extremes of these Islands on the Edge.

In the final programme of the landmark series, narrated by Ewan McGregor, we meet the people of the Hebrides and discover how they’re learning to live side-by-side with their wild neighbours.

Ferryman Donnie MacDonald from Skye has discovered that business can prosper if your passengers can be treated to some on-board entertainment in the form of white tailed eagles hunting alongside the boat.

We also meet Andrew Abrahams, who’s attempting to turn the Island of Colonsay into a nature reserve for bees, Alice Starmore - an artist inspired by the peatlands of Lewis and Innes Henderson, the Coll fisherman who regularly has to steer his boat through a 100-strong group of basking sharks!

Hidden deep beneath the sea lies the wreckage of mighty war machines, each with untold stories of battles, glory and demise. Join us on the hunt for these antiques of the deep, and unlock the mysteries and the history waiting on the ocean floor. Each episode of QUEST FOR SUNKEN WARSHIPS features authentic historical footage, CGI illustrations and archival materials of the battles being investigated, along with high-resolution underwater images and live-action, on-site explorations of the sunken wrecks by our team of courageous divers.

In 1942 German U-boats turned the waters off Cape Hatteras North Carolina into a sea of death. For six months the marauding U-boats patrolled the area unchallenged, sinking countless ships that littered the ocean and beaches with oil, cargo and bodies.

In February 1944, the World War II tides are turning as the U.S. makes steady inroads against the Japanese in the South Pacific. But hiding among the islands is Truk; a self-contained fortress with a deep lagoon, high islands and circling barrier reef.

The massive aircraft carrier rests in 212 feet of water in a north-south orientation on the sandy bottom. With an overall height of 151 feet, there is plenty of ship to view within recreational dive limits.

A team of divers set out to examine what they thought was a sunken supply ship. They find the hull of a World War II United States Navy Destroyer instead. They’ve also found a mystery because according to Navy records the USS Murphy never sank.

Undersea explorer Robert Ballard, whose earlier expeditions led him to the submerged wrecks of the Titanic and the German battleship the Bismarck, again provides a compelling link to history in this 1993 reconstruction of the six- month battle for Guadalcanal. That island, in the South Pacific’s Solomon chain, was the prize in the pivotal 1942 struggle pitting beleaguered Allied forces against an onslaught of imperial Japanese ships, troops, and air power. Even then, strategists on both sides correctly believed the outcome would determine the balance of military power in the Pacific theater of World War II.

The saga of Guadalcanal, as effectively traced through modern interviews, archival movie footage, and still photographs, is gripping on its own terms: following a series of victories in Southeast Asia and the Pacific, the Japanese were poised to forge an air link to Australia with an airstrip on the jungle island. An invasion force of U.S. Marines took the airstrip, but a swift enemy counterattack shattered supporting naval cruisers, isolating the ground troops. Over the next six months, reversals of fortune–including oversight and arrogance in the Japanese command and incompetence and indecision among U.S. brass–provided added suspense. By the time Guadalcanal was firmly held by an occupying Allied force, the northern water passage, dubbed Iron Bottom Sound, was strewn with the wrecks of some 50 warships from both sides.

The Lost Fleet of Guadalcanal thus begins with submarine footage of those wrecks, then weaves its tale of undersea adventure with the human drama played out a half century earlier. Giving the story added emotional weight are the reminiscences of combat veterans from both Allied and Japanese armed forces, including visibly painful recollections of the horrific battles, which left thousands dead in the swamps and jungles of the island, as well as on the ocean floor. The gravity of the campaign, as well as the intelligence of its presentation, are underscored by an on-camera introduction from President George Bush.

The eastern edge of Scotland - a coastline of great drama, variety and historic resonance. From the towering sandstone cliffs of Orkney and Caithness, down past the fishertowns of the Moray Firth, the long beaches of Kincardine, Angus and Fife, the seascape around Edinburgh all the way to the City of Berwick-on-Tweed, once part of Scotland and now the most northerly outpost of England. This is a shoreline decked out with all the traces of humankind; stone-age burial chambers, Pictish brochs, land fortresses, royal castles, millionaires palaces, ancient harbours, North Sea drilling rigs, soaring bridges, medieval churches, gun emplacements and the roar and flare of modern petrochemical plants. The helicopter-mounted cameras of Edge of the Land reveal the unknown - and endlessly surprising - seascape of the east, the other half of Scotlands enchanted shore.

In this programme we travel east from Cape Wrath along the north coast to Tongue, Thurso, the port of Scrabster, the Pentland Firth and Duncansby Head.

From the Island of Stroma, in the Pentland Firth across to Orkney, the Island of Flotta, Kirkwall and north to Papa Westray.

This journey takes us from Duncansby Head, down the coast of Caithness to the fishing port of Wick and the town of Cromarty near Inverness.

From the Black Isle and the Beauly Firth, to the town of Inverness, and past the fishertowns that are strung along the shore of the Moray Firth. Then we round the most easterly point of the Scottish mainland and travel down the coast of Buchan to the Granite City of Aberdeen.

This journey takes us from Stonehaven south to Montrose. The fishertowns of Arbroath and Dundee to Perth and St. Andrews.

The final episode takes us from the Firth of Forth to Kincardine Bridge, Leith, North Berwick and Berwick Upon Tweed.

In the early days of the 20th century, the German Kaiser challenged the naval power of the British with a new and mighty battle fleet. Who would rule the world’s seas? It was a question that would be decided in the First World War. After the shock defeat of the British at Coronel, a battle which cost 1,700 seamen their lives, Winston Churchill demanded a merciless revenge. Off the Falkland Islands, the entire German overseas squadron with a crew of 2,200 men was sunk. Only two cruisers escaped the demise of their fleet, the Dresden and the Emden. Churchill set a bounty on them, making them the most hunted ships on the Seven Seas. In the icy fjords of Patagonia and the tropical heat of the South Seas, both crews battled for their very survival. After a dramatic hunt they were both finally sunk.

Nonetheless, most of their crewmen escaped death and returned home safe and sound. How this came about and their long adventurous journey through the war- torn seas and continents is recounted by two very dramatic documentaries in the Hunt the Kaiser’s Cruisers! series, The Caravan of Sailors and The Last Ship Afloat. Newly discovered archive materials on the decisive sea battles, naval reports and private journals permit a precise reconstruction of the events. For the first time, interviews with descendants and military historians, footage from the original scenes of action and dramatic re- enactments allow us to do justice to both of these exciting stories.

This documentary celebrates the service of the great aircraft carriers, from the USS Langley to the USS John F. Kennedy. The use of documentary footage and live interviews with Naval advisors adds depth and understanding. Some of the classic events of Navel aviation history are shown, including the launching of B-25s from the carrier Hornet, the suicide Kamikaze raids on fleet off Japan, and the Battle of the Coral Sea. Produced in the early 1970s, “Hook Down, Wheels Down” was one of the most comprehensive (and expensive) films made by the U.S. Navy. It covers the history and development of the U.S. aircraft carrier, and does so through interviews with many of the men who made it happen. While dozens of aircraft carriers are featured, it is the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) that takes center stage – and the material shot on her deck looks like it is right out of “Top Gun”. There is wonderful flightdeck action footage, great aerial flight footage, incredible WWII dog fight and bombing footage as well as endless aircraft carrier operational footage. Also shown in this film are very rare images of the first aircraft carrier USS Langley (CV-1) (formerly USS Jupiter AC-3).

The follow on vessels are widely featured including USS Lexington (CV-3) and the USS Yorktown (CV-5) in the Battle of Coral Sea. Also featured: USS Saratoga (CV-2), USS Enterprise (CV-6), USS Hornet (CV-8), USS Wasp (CV-7), USS Ranger (CV-4), USS Yorktown (CV-5), USS Essex (CV-9), USS Guadalcanal (CVE-60), the British carrier HMS Furious, the destroyer USS Zeilin (DD-313), and many other warships. Various incidents are shown from Pearl Harbor, Midway, Coral Sea, the capture of the submarine U-505, the Marianas Turkey Shoot, the Doolittle Raid on Japan, and more. Includes interviews or appearances by many WWII naval aviators and aces including Wade McClusky, Alex Vraciu, John Jay Courtney, Billy Mitchell, Gerald Bogen, Leslie Generes, John S. Thatch (of “Thatch Weave” fame), Ensign George Gay, David Campbell (whose Minsi III appears in the film), Edward “Butch” O’Hare, Charles Lindbergh, Glenn Curtiss, Clark Gable and Wallace Beery.

Planes seen in the film include the Wright Brothers flier, biplanes, Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis, the NC-4 Flying Boat, Hellcat, Avenger, Corsair, Vindicator, Devastator, Wildcat, and Japanese Zero. Also seen in the film: dogfights, combat flying, the Washington Conference on battleships, the Panama Canal exercise of 1929, WWII and Korea events up to the time of early 1970’s.

The complete combat history and technology of American warships. These are the battleships, destroyers, aircraft carriers, submarines, and specialised ships that belong in the warship hall of fame. Archival footage and interviews are punctuated by all-access inspections of the ship’s “battle stations,” conducted by young, active Navy sailors. The series lets the viewer understand the role of each weapon and technology, the dramas that unfolded in different rooms during the heat of battle, and the unique traditions and stories of each vessel.

“Landing Ship Tanks” weren’t deemed noble enough even to have names. They were not thought of as warships even though they were always the first floating metal to touch fire-swept beaches from North Africa, to Sicily, to Normandy, and from the Philippines to Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The story of these ships is therefore one of an unsung hero, as it reveals not just the considerable war- long battle action of one ship, but exemplifies the collective saga of a design class that had absolutely no military precedent before the first keel was laid in June of 1942. We learn the dire necessity of these ships from crucial role in D-Day, how the date was postponed to allow for more to be constructed, and how precariously close they came to disaster with the tragic story of Exercise Tiger, the botched D-Day dress rehearsal that claimed the lives of hundreds of LST sailors and put the entire mission in jeopardy.

The FFG-58 launched in 1984, a mighty state-of-the art Oliver Hazard Perry Class frigate. Following the tradition of coolness and courage through disastrous battle damage she is ravaged by an enormous explosion in an enemy minefield in the Persian Gulf during the Desert Storm fighting. The crew fights a prolonged battle against severe flooding and raging fires to barely preserve the life of their ship. Today, this Sammy B operates off the coast of the US, where our cameras follow her and she combats homeland security threats.

Although the Arizona fought only minutes in the battle in which she died, her afterlife as a tragic symbol epitomizes American naval sacrifice and courage. Here we go back to the ship for a final reunion with the last of her survivors and witness the entombing of a deceased survivor on the ship (the Arizona is the only Naval ship that allows it’s survivors to rest eternally below the water with their fallen comrades). As we tell her heroic story of fighting against insurmountable odds we also take witness to her heroic past highlights and recent discoveries.

Old Ironsides represents everything stirring about the United States Navy. It’s fighting victories, its pioneering establishment of American international power, its traditions, its matchless seamanship, its indispensable role in the birth and defence of the United States itself. It is incredible that one of the six original frigates authorized for construction by the Navy Act of 1794, two years before there was a United States, is still afloat, still sailing under her own power, still commissioned, and still inspiring.

In all, there have been eight ships in the U.S. Navy that have carried the name Enterprise dating to the earliest days of the Continental Navy. That said, most significant in that lineage have been the last two, both are deemed important aircraft carriers of their time. Both have fought in wars and overcome adversity along the way.

One of the most heroic ships of the Second World War, CV-8 has the distinction of serving as the flight deck for the incredible Doolittle Tokyo raid before being sunk by an enemy who tortured and executed the fliers of that raid. Her predecessor ship CV-12 goes on to see sixteen months in continuous battle action penetrating to within 40 miles of the Japanese home islands and set incredible records: Under air attack 59 separate times; Over 1,400 enemy planes destroyed by her planes, along with 1,200,000 tons of enemy shipping; Ten of her pilots reaching “Ace In One Day” status; Over 70 enemy planes shot down in one day; Over 255 shot down in one month; Thirty of her 42 Hellcat pilots becoming aces; Her torpedo planes destroying the super-battleship Yamato as it raced to menace the Okinawa beachhead; And, best revenge of all, her planes making the first strikes against Tokyo since the Doolittle raid launched by her illustrious ancestor. Action packed and emotional testimony.

A unique blend of present and past; USS New York’s predecessor, the battleship New York, was born in 1911 and was present to take the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet at Scapa Flo in 1918. At the end of the war she is slated a target ship for the great Bikini atom-bomb tests, but she shrugs off the damage that sent more modern ships to the bottom and is towed to Pearl Harbour. There she is studied for two years before finally being sunk in an epic eight hours of intense fire before slipping under. Returning once again to our latest New York, we watch the rebirth of a legend, filled with the dynamic shooting of the modern construction, crew and Navy.

The only preserved Allen M. Sumner class destroyer preserved in her World War II configuration, the USS Laffey is also the only surviving destroyer of the period that saw action in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theatre. USS Laffey acted first as an escort for convoys to Great Britain, staying overseas in 1944 to prepare for the invasion of France.

Nautilus was the world’s first true submarine. All vessels previously known as “submarines” were in fact only submersible craft. Nautilus’ nuclear plant enabled the boat to remain submerged for weeks, even months.

New Jersey’s sponsor was Mrs. Charles Edison, wife of the Governor of New Jersey and daughter-in-law of the famous inventor Thomas Edison. After commissioning on May 23, 1943, the ship went through shakedown training and then proceeded to the Pacific, where she was involved in a long list of operations throughout the remainder of World War II. A particular highlight was service as flagship for Commander Third Fleet, Admiral William “Bull” Halsey, during the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944.

As one of the masses of Liberties to participate in the D-Day invasion, where her life span was estimated to be no more than just a couple cross channel crossings, she has miraculously clung to life while others hit the scrap heap.

Considered the most powerful warship afloat because of her ten 14"/45 guns in five twin turrets, The USS Texas was commissioned in March of 1914 and proceeded almost immediately to Mexican waters where she joined the Special Service Squadron following the “Vera Cruz Incident.” She returned to Atlantic Fleet operations in the fall of 1914, after the Mexican crisis was resolved. In 1916 Texas became the first U.S. battleship to mount anti-aircraft guns and the first to control gunfire with directors and range-keepers, forerunners of today’s computers. After the U.S. entered World War I, she spent 1917 training gun crews for merchant ships that were often attacked by gunfire from surfaced submarines. Texas joined the 6th Battle Squadron of the British Grand Fleet early in 1918, operating out of Scapa Flow and the Firth of Forth. Later in 1918 she guarded the German Fleet en route to its surrender anchorage and escorted President Wilson to peace talks in France.

Yorktown received 11 battle stars for her World War II service and was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. She was also the star of an Academy Award winning documentary movie “Fighting Lady” in 1945. Though no formal credit was given her in the film, the majority of the footage used in the film was shot on her decks by Navy combat photographers. Yorktown and other Essex class carriers comprised the core of the U.S. post-war fleet. After her Korean War duty, Yorktown was modernized for anti-submarine warfare and was deployed to Vietnam. For her service off Vietnam she was awarded four battle stars. In 1968 the carrier recovered the crew of Apollo 8, the first manned flight to orbit the moon. Decommissioned in 1970, Yorktown became the centrepiece of the fleet of ships at Patriots Point in 1975.

A historical documentary series tracing the history of this famous German battleship with extensive use of archive footage and exclusive interviews with former crew members.

This video traces the early history of the ship, from the launch and sea trials to the dramatic dash through the English Channel back to Germany in 1942.

After the loss of her sister ship Gneisenau, the good fortunes of the Scharnhorst ran out; while intercepting a Murmansk bound Allied convoy in December 1943, the Scharnhorst was attacked by two British warship groups. Putting up a valiant fight against hopeless odds, the Scharnhorst was finally sunk after sustaining 15 torpedo hits. Out of 1968 crewmen, only 36 survived.
