The American Wild West has proved a fertile ground for stories of heroism and triumph over adversity. It was a time of notorious outlaws, gunfighters turned sheriffs and frontier justice. From the most famous outlaw of them all, Billy The Kid, the rock star General Custer, and the vengeful lawman Wyatt Earp, audiences have been captivated by these legends. But what of the men behind the myths - and the truth? Blending dramatic recreations with the latest archaeological, forensic and ballistic research, this three-part series brings the truth to light.

In 1869, George Armstrong Custer smoked the peace pipe that meant the US Army would fight no more against the Sioux Indians. Custer was glorious, glamorous and a national hero. But seven years later, triumph turned to tragedy. At the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876, General Custer led a raid to exterminate the Sioux Indians - and died in the attempt. General Custer’s death has given rise to a hundred myths. Was he killed by lance, arrow, tomahawk or bullet? Was he the first or last to die?

Presenting a radical new picture of the battle, this episode creates an image of a driven man with dark secrets whose rivalries with his own officers would cost all of them their lives. Based on written accounts, Native American pictograms and the oral testimony of the survivors, this film reveals the dark secrets of Custer’s earlier campaigns, and how they hold the key to understanding the Little Big Horn. It also reveals that although two-thirds of Custer’s soldiers were killed, research shows he was close to a remarkable victory.

For many years it was said that no witnesses survived the slaughter of Custer and his men. In fact, more than one thousand American Indians survived, and their long-ignored accounts are now proving to be highly accurate according to latest archaeology.

Escapologist, lover, joker, charmer - everyone loved Billy. When he died, he was just 21 years old but he had killed six men.

Careful scrutiny of the many original letters written by The Kid, and reports drawn from government files reveal an amazing truth. The government had promised Billy the Kid immunity from prosecution for his first two killings, both of which happened as part of a cattle war where all law had broken down on the frontier. But once Billy had served his purpose as a prosecution witness, the deal was not honoured.

Billy was forced back on the run, turned back to crime, killed two more men and was captured. Sentenced to death, he was guarded by two deputies who taunted him about his hanging until he escaped, and shot them both dead with their own guns. Two months later Billy was ambushed at a remote homestead and shot dead. Based on detailed scrutiny of court records, letters and press reports, this film re-creates in exact detail all Billy’s killings, and examines the case behind the pardoning of Billy the Kid.

The gunfight at the OK Corral was the classic Western shoot-out. It eventually turned one man into a great American hero and a symbol of the nation. His name was Wyatt Earp. But after the smoke cleared on that fateful day in Tombstone in the autumn of 1881 with Tom McLaury, his brother Frank and Billy Clanton lying dead in the dusty street, Wyatt Earp wasn’t seen as a hero but a villain. The legendary lawman was arrested and put on trial for murder. And the prosecution were so sure of victory that they pushed for the ultimate penalty – death. The resulting court case was one of the most dramatic in American history and its outcome helped shape the nation.

Ironically, the trial spared Wyatt’s life, but the law was not able to protect his brothers, gunned down in the following year by the McLaury clan. So in a final bloody climax, Wyatt abandoned his badge, and hunted down and killed the killers.

This film recreates what happened in the 30 seconds of mayhem at the OK Corral, and the burning resentment of the 24 hours that led up to it. Drama – based on court records, letters and press reports – recreates the fevered sense of excitement, punctuated by expert testimony and detailed ballistic testing. If any single episode of history can be said to embody the Wild West, it is this: the true story of the Gunfight at the OK Corral.

They came of age in a new world of intoxicating and innovative ideas about human and civil rights, diverse economic systems, and self-government. In a few short years, these men and women would transform themselves into architects of the future through the building of a new nation unlike any that had ever come before. From the roots of the rebellion and the signing of the Declaration of Independence to victory on the battlefield at Yorktown and the adoption of The United States Constitution, The Revolution tells he remarkable story of this important era in history. Venturing beyond the conventional list of generals and politicians, The History Channel introduces the full range of individuals who helped shape this great conflict, including some of the war’s most influential unsung heroes. Through cinematic recreations, intimate biographical investigations, and provocative political, military, and economic analysis, The Revolution breathes new life into one of the most pivotal periods in American history.

-- A look at the controversies and conflicts leading to war, including the Stamp Act riots, the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, and Lexington and Concord. The key players of the Revolution emerge, including Samuel Adams, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Patrick Henry, Thomas Hutchinson, as well as England’s King George III and British General Thomas Gage.

-- Rebellion escalates into war with the Battle at Bunker Hill. The Continental Congress establishes an army and appoints George Washington as Commander-in-Chief. The army surrounds the British troops that occupy Boston, and Britain sends additional troops and its three best generals – William Howe, John Burgoyne and Henry Clinton – to take over command. The Continental assault from Dorchester Heights forces the British and loyalists to evacuate the city.

-- Noble ideas and dreams of independence ring out as America is born in 1776. However, dark, devastating struggles will quickly challenge these hopes and leave few believing that the glorious cause will survive.

-- The new nation stares at the stark realization that it could soon be dead. Desperate and determined, General Washington gambles on a brilliant yet dangerously daring stroke to save his army and America.

-- Benjamin Franklin heads to Paris to seduce the French to join the fight against their common enemy, England. British General William Howe delivers a crushing blow to Washington’s troops at the Battle of Brandywine, taking Philadelphia. To the North, Horatio Gates defeats British General Burgoyne at the Battle of Saratoga, a victory that convinces France to enter the fight, turning the American Revolution into a World War.

-- As Washington’s losses add up, some in Congress begin to question his leadership. Washington’s concern is sustaining and rebuilding his ragged, starving and dwindling army through the frigid winter at Valley Forge. With the help of Baron Von Steuben and Nathanael Greene, the Continental Army becomes a more professional fighting force. Washington rebuilds his reputation by holding back the British at the Battle of Monmouth.

-- General Benedict Arnold turns his back on his cause and country in an act of pride, sealing forever his legacy as a traitor. Washington takes his war to the frontier, burning the Iroquois Indians out of New York State and leaving a wake of destruction and devastation.

-- Failing to defeat Washington, the British turn their attention southward. In a last ditch effort to quell the rebellion, they lay siege to Charleston, South Carolina, the third largest city in the colonies. General Benjamin Lincoln, commander of the Southern wing of the Continental Army, braces for the attack but his outnumbered force will fall.

-- After the fall of Charleston, the war explodes into the Carolina backcountry. The Americans, under General Gates, suffer a humiliating defeat at Camden, forcing Congress to send Nathanael Greene to lead the southern forces. In an unconventional strategy, Greene and General Daniel Morgan split the army, leading Cornwallis on a harrowing chase, which culminates in the Battle of Guildford Courthouse.

-- Washington faces two mutinies, Congress is broke, and the army desperately needs more help from the French. In England, the opposition to the war grows. The French are tired of supporting the war, but Franklin continues to beg for aid. The French finally send their fleet to America. Cornwallis moves his army to Yorktown, and the Allied forces close in for the last major battle of the war.

-- The news of the American victory at Yorktown spreads like wildfire around the globe. Patriots celebrate and Loyalists begin evacuating, as Washington awaits the next British move. John Adams joins Benjamin Franklin in France to negotiate the treaty of 1783. The thirteen American states convene a Constitutional Convention to hammer out a new form of government, and urge a reluctant Washington to become American’s first President.

--Selected as the first president of the United States, George Washington journeys from his home in Virginia to New York City for his inauguration.

Also Known as (LEGACY) – As George Washington rides to his inauguration as the first President of the United States, he looks back on the war and its most critical moments, and looks to its meaning for the future.

Corruption drove the hungry horde of Visigoths to rebel against Rome and pride drove the Emperor Valens, heading a fractured Roman Empire, to take them on without support

Of all Rome’s many battles, perhaps the most important was internal. When Julius Caesar went head-to-head, with Gnaeus Pompey, the outcome would change the fate of the Western world

The patrician leader Arminius, or Herman the German, was at the helm of one of the darkest ambushes in the history of Rome, dispelling the aura of invincibility that had long marched ahead of the vaunted legions.

the first great invasion of the Persian Empire was not thwarted by the Spartans, but by the Athenians. In a heroic effort, the hoplite warriors of the city-state triumphed in a fight against both greater numbers and the march of time.

- As one of Egypt’s greatest pharaohs, Rames II confronted the biggest menace to his reign as the Hittite Wing Muwwitallah threatened to break away from the hegemony of the Egyptian empire.

Spartacus has long been one of the most famous figures of the ancient world. A Thracian gladiator with a gift for leadership, he led a huge revolt against Rome at the height of its power

- In one of history’s greatest displays of military heroism, 300 Spartans outside Thermopylae held off the vengeful Persians until the last Spartan had been killed.

No ruler in history represents the barbarian brutality as much as Attila the Hun, who swept through 5th-century Europe and emerged holding its future in his grasp.

In a classic military conflict between two Ancient World superpowers, the great Macedonian phalanx clashed mightily against the heavily fortified Roman legion.

In the farthest flung province of the Roman Empire - Britain - a warrior queen named Boudicca rose in revolt.

In a classic example of double-envelopment manoeuvre, an under-fortified Hannibal inflicted the greatest ever defeat on the forces of Rome, who marched eight legions strong into their surprising defeat

Although he may have been the richest man in Rome, Crassus was the poor relation in the First Triumvirate. He needed military laurels to raise him to the vanity cost the lives of seven legions, his son and his own.

Gaugamela was the greatest battle fought by Alexander the Great and it gave him control of the Persian Empire. Darius raised a titanic army against Alexander and picked the ideal spot for his cavalry-led force, but it was not enough

Arthur C. Clarke’s Mysterious World Do U.F.O.s or the Loch Ness Monster really exist? Did ancient civilisations possess unsuspected scientific know-how? Can we believe the reports of the Abominable Snowman or the Great Sea Serpent? How is it that fish, frogs and seeds can fall from a clear blue sky? In this series, Arthur C. Clarke, author of 2001: A Space Odyssey investigates these and many other intriguing mysteries. This much sought-after show debunks myths and legends about some of the planetís strangest phenomena, presenting us with fascinating truths about humanity and the world in which we live. Originally broadcast on ITV in 1980, In January 2008 the original series was released on DVD in the UK by Network and Granada. It features all of the 13 original episodes unedited and remastered in Digital Quality.

This episode introduces the main theme and aim of the series, to delve into strange artifacts, notions and incidents. Investigated here: he views and describes the natural mystery of a solar eclipse. Historical, societal and scientific points of view are compared and contrasted.

This episode investigates the legends and stories of strange creatures beneath the sea. The video presents accounts of sailors and others of the reality of sea monsters and mermaids. The film has some surprising evidence in support of such claims.

Can we solve the mysteries surrounding claims of artifacts which apparently defy our view of the level technological development possible in ancient civilizations? Clarke dismisses theories involving extraterrestrials, and rather focuses on finding very Earthbound explanations.

This episode is divided equally between considering evidence for the Bigfoot and Yeti. Interviewees for the segment on the Yeti include Don Whillans, Lord Hunt and Eric Shipton. Lengthy consideration is given to the Patterson-Gimlin film, and interviewees include Grover Krantz - who demonstrates several casts of alleged Bigfoot tracks that he feels bolsters his belief that the creature represents a relative of Gigantopithecus

Mystifying geoglyphs, giant pictures covering large areas on the ground, appear across the globe, many created by ancient peoples. They only become recognizable at great distances or are situated away from the common sight of man. This episode addresses the questions surrounding these images and covers such marvels as the Cerne Abbas giant and the Nazca lines

Scotland’s Loch Ness fills the screen and the viewers already know the subject the monster of the lake, sometimes referred to as Nessy. Still Clarke informs us that at least 50 other lakes in the world are claimed to be likewise inhabited by such giant beasts. After considering the accounts and evidence, the question of believability concerning Loch Ness as well as the entire collection he weighs the possibilities: Fact or hoax or merely mistaken identity.

This episode deals with a certainty: The cataclysmic Tunguska explosion of June 30, 1908. No one questions the fact that it occurred. Still to this day there is uncertainty as to the true nature of the incident and its possible implications concerning the expectations should such an event again take place. The subject is deeply discussed, reviewing all available information and Clarke addresses the significance of the theories presented

Stonehenge. The place its mere name inspires awe. These ancient stones are shrouded in a secret of time. Their purpose, their builders and the very source of the stones themselves are still subject to debate. Clarke invites us to hear the legends and theory concerning the famous site and the hundreds of others to be found across the British Isles.

Clarke devotes this episode to a story old as man: something falling to Earth from the sky. The cases vary and so do the possible solutions as to how and why strange or unlikely objects fall out of it. Some answers seem fairly simple while others defy easy analysis. Nevertheless the famed author displays a variety of cases and offers possible scenarios to explain the phenomena.

Right away Clarke removes any doubt as to his opinion of UFOs he states that he has been interested for 50 years and claims to have observed at least six. He even goes on to say, sightings are very common. He does, however, reserve his opinions concerning them; revealing more and more of his ideas on the subject as the episode progresses

In the old maps charted by the first explorers of land and sea, the unknown areas of the globe were often marked by ominous warnings of danger like “here be dragons”. Those intrepid men were the first to report on the existence of new animal species unknown to westerners until that moment. Some were captured and taken to European palaces for the amazement of kings and queens, visible symbols of a new era of discovery. Many centuries have gone by and our Earth seems smaller due to the faster means of transportation we now possess, but there are many areas in the five continents where man has never been, especially in the dense jungles of Africa and South America or in the inaccessible forests of Siberia. As contradictory as it seems, many creatures of myth may still roam the untouched places of the world.

This episode asks, are beings from outer space communicating with us? The Face on Mars and the Star of Bethlehem are among the phenomena investigated. Including lost planets such as Vulcan, the Martian canals, the identity of the Star of Bethlehem etc.

A collection of unrelated subjects and a summing-up – including the sailing stones of Death Valley, the Alma, entombed toads, ball lightning in which physicist James Tuck appears, and a summing-up.

This 18-episode series is a complete story of Russian aircraft. Every type of aircraft featured in this series: fighters, bombers, reconnaissance and attack aircraft, transport and passenger aircraft, hydroplanes, training and sports aircraft, naval aviation, WIG craft and air cushion vessels, helicopters.

Series director: Andrey Kulyasov Concept and research: Vladimir Petrov Music: De Wolfe Narrator: Alexander Loginov (English) Producer: Sergey Vikulin Total running time: 936 min.

A modern fighter is a combination of beauty and power, speed and maneuverability. Its flight fascinates audience at any air show and makes potential enemies muse. A fighter has a hard task - it has to win an air fight not only against an enemy’s fighter, but against any other type of aircraft. Currently the authority of the Russian school designing aircraft of this type is acknowledged world wide. But that was not always so. Here is a story of the national fighter development from the WWI until the end of the 30s of the 20th century.

One of the largest air battles of the Second World War took place in spring 1943 in the sky over Kuban. The Germans undertook massive air raids to liquidate the menace from the rear, in which over 500 aircraft took part. But the Soviet aviation as well concentrated up to 900 machines in that place. A sharp battle lasted over two months. The fight for the air superiority was violent. The main role in this fight was played by the Soviet fighters of the new generation.

A fighter is designated to have superiority over aircraft of any other class. Speed is one of the most important components of success. During the Second World War the maximum speed of serial fighters significantly increased. However, the propeller was capable of bringing aircraft only to a certain limited speed. The way out was found in the creation of a principally new type of engine - the jet engine.

An air show takes place in Zhukovsky once in two years. This event attracts thousands of people. Fighters always become stars of the show. Capabilities of the 21st century aircraft are astonishing. The multi-ton machines tumble in the sky as if denying classical laws of aerodynamics. They leave no doubt – the enemy in an air battle will be defeated!

Massive air parades of the 30’s. Different types of combat aircraft fly in the sky. From one parade to another demonstration becomes more immense, bombers become bigger and bigger. Here is a passenger giant “Maxim Gorky”, which, if needed, may become a bomber. With this kind of power any enemy can be defeated. Such groove of power fitted well ambitions of the young state. Aviation parades become the sign of the grandeur and might of the country. It did not take long for the Second World War to test the endurance of this might.

In October 1962 the world faced the Caribbean crisis. In response to the Soviet missiles allocation in Cuba, the United States blocked the Island of Freedom. Tension among nuclear powers was growing. The Soviet strategic bombers were relocated to the borders - closer to the targets in Europe and America. Exhausting combat watch began. Alert level was maximum. All involved in those days experienced enormous tension. Even incomplete knowledge of the nuclear weapons capabilities drew an astonishing picture of the aftermath. The world was on the verge of the Third World War.

In the second half of the Great Patriotic War the Soviet aviation had total air superiority. IL-2 aircraft one after another delivered attacks over the fainting enemy. Throughout the war attack aircraft obtained such fame and confidence, that they turned into a symbol of that war. Rough and powerful – are the two words truly characterizing IL-2. It was an unpretentious aircraft capable of doing its job in a winter frost, summer heat or a brake-up season. Infantry loved it. Soldiers exuberated when it was appearing in the sky rushing toward the enemy. IL-2 by right was deemed the best attack aircraft of the Second World War.

This aircraft was first shown in 1992 and thereafter it was repeatedly demonstrated at various air shows. The armament arsenal was impressive. High precision missiles and bombs, capable of hitting targets in the air, on the ground and at sea. It is not just an aircraft, it’s a whole combat complex. The striking SU-34 aircraft combines every function of a reconnaissance plane, a bomber and a strike fighter. But the route from inert fighter-bombers of the mid-twenties, to this wonder-weapon of the end of the 21st century was not easy.

March 1956. Great Britain is getting ready for the visit of Nikita Khrushchev – leader of the country which was by that time practically closed for the West. Right on the eve of this event, TU-104 – the Russian jet air liner landed in London. Three days later two more beauties of the same kind flew in. It was a sensation! The British “Comet” did not fly. The American jet firstlings were still under construction. And there you are – three Russian aircraft at a time! The Queen confessed that every time upon hearing the unusual turbines’ rumble, she got out to the balcony to see the Russian wonder… It all started half a century before the events described above.

The end of December 1968 was foul. Low clouds stood over the testing aerodrome of Zhukovsky. Phone calls kept coming from the Ministry: “The aircraft must take off before the New Year!” It was no accident. It was not just another new aircraft. It was supposed to be the debut of the supersonic passenger airliner TU-144… The Anglo-French “Concord” was getting ready for its first flight at the same time… It was important to overrun competitors. Prestige of the Soviet state was at stake. On December 31, the last day of the year, TU-144 took off… It was that aircraft, which entered the history as the first in the world supersonic passenger airliner. Civil aviation was in transition to a new quality level…

Mankind created a lot of machines.… An airplane having mastered the laws of the air stopped being a miracle. Way before that ships tamed the oceans. But restless minds keep on creating new machines. And there you are – a vessel that can take off from water not really leaving it. What is it? A sailing aircraft, or a flying vessel? What kind of a technical wonder is that, existing at the edge of two environments?

Every summer news agencies report of forest fires bursting out in this or that country. Fire brings enormous damage. That’s where fire extinguishing aviation can help. An airplane looks like a tiny bug against environment. Can it really help? Efficiency of the fire extinguishing aircraft becomes the main point. How much fire extinguishing liquid it can take and how quick? An amphibious aircraft has no match in this situation. Gliding over the water surface within seconds it fills up the tanks to drop tons of water on the fire source… Amphibious aircraft today are used mainly at emergency situations. But throughout their history they fought in wars, transported passengers and rescued people.

A man always wanted to fly. Today we know, how to do it, while before this issue was not as obvious. To make wings like the birds have or to screw into the air – both variants seemed quite natural… The first variant lead to creation of an airplane, while the second – of a helicopter. Prototypes of a helicopter were found in the remote ages. Go Khun – the Chinese scientist of the 4th century and the great Leonardo Da Vinci in the 15th century, both proposed their versions of a helicopter. The genius Mikhail Lomonosov also worked in this sphere. In 1754 he built an “aerodromic machine” – which was nothing else than a small size helicopter. Of course it did not fly, but experiments helped developing ideas, which predetermined all further helicopter construction. [

April 26, 1986. Two explosions burst out at the 4th energy block of the Chernobil Atomic Power Station. It was a catastrophe. Scientists proposed to seal the atomic reactor with a protective sand layer. But there was no other way to approach the crashed facility than by air. Such task could be carried out only by helicopters. One after another machines flew toward the energy block to drop sand over the target. Helicopters had to hover right over the epicenter. Temperature was reaching 200 degrees Celsius. Radiation thousand times exceeded all possible norms. Under such dramatic circumstances helicopters and pilots showed their best.

A small and light airplane. A topic seemed unworthy of an interesting story. What is there to say? It is not a powerful bomber, nor a fast and streamlined fighter nor a respectable airliner. However, the way to all those real combat aircraft for any pilot always started with a small flying thing. Ask anyone and they will reverently remember their first obedient, faithful, forgiving all mistakes machine… The seeming simplicity of its creation is deceptive. Throughout more than a hundred years history of aviation, thousands of people tried to resolve this problem. But only some machines became a legend.

Naval maneuvers of the 70’s. Hundreds of ships, thousands of naval aircraft… Area of operation – seas and oceans Amphibians, performing reconnaissance… Antisubmarine aircraft and helicopters, carrying equipment for searching and destroying submarines… You can see land based missile carriers, capable of destroying an aircraft carrier of a potential enemy… Soon ship based aircraft will be operational.

Morning, December 25, 1979. Almost three hundred military transport aircraft are lined up at airfields in the Middle Asia. Inside cargo cabins are combat equipment and landing troops. A signal comes in and aircraft groups, one after another, with roaring engines and clouds of dust, start into the air. It all looks more like a great relocation of people. In the next three days the intensive work does not slow down. Continuous engines roar of heavy aircraft hangs over the air fields… That’s how the picture of the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan looked. In the first days of the operation almost 8,000 people, 900 items of equipment and over a thousand tons of cargo were relocated. And this was only 2% of the enormous volume of transportation performed by the Soviet military transport aviation in that war.

Curiosity is a natural human feature. First air balloons and then airplanes significantly expanded abilities to have this curiosity satisfied. But very soon, careless curiosity gave way to mercantile interest. In deed, in the time of war flying above, one can have a bird’s view of the entire position and sometimes of the intentions of the enemy.

“Yak-3 was the easiest to fly and most maneuverable fighter aircraft, not only in the the family of “Yak”, but also among the planes that fought all the World War II fronts. After the appearance of Yak-3 at the front German aces morale and fighting spirit were dealt a blow from which they were not able to recover before the end of the war. Participating in hostilities at the final stage of the war, the Yak-3 played an important role in the final defeat of air forces of Nazi Germany.”

This Russian printed DVD edition of the original episode has been renamed “Yak-3” but actually it chronicles “The Great Patriotic War” as the original title says.

During the 1940s, the Soviet government, knowing of the American nuclear program, elected to begin work on its own nuclear weapon program. The goal was to create and test the first Soviet atomic bomb within a short time interval to counter a major postwar threat from the West. An important secondary concern became apparent: how to deliver that weapon to the target. Thus, the Tu-95 Bear and the Tu-142, its close relative, were born. The Tu-95 is a large, heavy strategic bomber with a slim fuselage, swept wings, and four powerful turboprop engines driving counter-rotating propellers. It remained in production as a maritime patrol aircraft and cruise missile carrier more than 30 years after it was first produced. The aircraft was revolutionary in the application of a swept wing and turbine powerplants. With its adaptability, enduring airframe and unique propulsion system the Tu-95 is one of the most successful Soviet bombers ever produced.
