Sheila Hancock sets out to discover what inspired the Brontë sisters to write such epic novels seemingly worlds apart from their own lives, and what fuelled their deep and passionate stories. Sheila’s journey starts in the Yorkshire village of Haworth and the brutal moors that inspired Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. She moves on to Brussels, where Charlotte Brontë developed the writing style that made Jane Eyre an enduring masterpiece, and later to Scarborough, last resting place of Anne Brontë, author of groundbreaking feminist classic The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.

Documentary celebrating the 200th anniversary of Pride and Prejudice, revealing the hidden world behind one of the greatest love stories of all time by restaging a regency ball at Chawton House, the grand estate of Jane Austen’s brother. Amanda Vickery and Alastair Sooke lead a team of world class experts as they reconstruct the ball in loving detail, from music and dancing, to food and fashion.

Jane Austen loved to dance and balls were hugely popular in early 19th century England. Crucially, a ball is also where Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy meet and begin their courtship. However very little is known about what they were actually like. What sort of music would they have danced to? How difficult were the steps? What were the clothes like to wear? And what did the food taste like?

This film uses music from the Austen family archives, as well as dances and dishes mentioned in her novels and letters to recreate the experience of attending an early 19th century country ball - the sort of event that Austen had in mind when she wrote some of the most famous and powerful scenes in English literature.

CS Lewis’s biographer AN Wilson goes in search of the man behind Narnia - bestselling children’s author and famous Christian writer, but an under- appreciated Oxford academic and an aspiring poet who never achieved the same success in writing verse as he did prose. Although his public life was spent in the all-male world of Oxford colleges, his private life was marked by secrecy and even his best friend JRR Tolkien didn’t know of his marriage to an American divorcee late in life. Lewis died on the same day as the assassination of John F Kennedy and few were at his burial; his alcoholic brother was too drunk to tell people the time of the funeral. Fifty years on, his life as a writer is now being remembered alongside other national literary heroes in Westminster Abbey’s Poets’ Corner. In this personal and insightful film, Wilson paints a psychological portrait of a man who experienced fame in the public arena, but whose personal life was marked by the loss of the three women he most loved.

After Columbus came conquest. From all corners of the world, explorers reached the shores of the New World to reap untold riches, seek new routes to the Far East, and gain the most elusive glory of all - a place in history. A sweeping saga of bravery, cruelty and pure folly, these are the stories of adventurers who stopped at nothing to conquer an unknown land and its people. Led by legendary cities of gold and mythical passages to China, foiled by international intrigue and mutiny on the high seas, men like Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, Henry Hudson, Jean Ribault and Vitus Bering left an indelible mark on a vast new continent.

Spanish Conquistador Vasquez Francisco de Coronado was first explorer of North America’s Southwest. Fired by tales of legendary Seven Cities of Cibola and their alleged riches, Coronado left New Spain(Mexico) in 1540 with 300 soldiers and eventually became the first European to set eyes on the Grand Canyon.

In 1562 French naval officer Jean Ribault sailed to America with the goal of establishing a French Protestant colony. Exploring the Florida coastline, Ribault sailed north and built Charlesfort (Port Royal, SC) before returning to France in the midst of a religious war. He eventually returned to America to help fight Spanish forces at Fort Caroline on the mouth of the St. Johns River in Florida.

Henry Hudson survived mutiny and discovered the mouth of Hudson River in 1609. In 1610, he returned to continent in search of a northwest passage, but after a year of enduring of extreme cold weather, part of the crew mutinied and set Hudson, his son, and seven others adrift on a small boat, never to be seen again.

In 1724 Danish navigator Vitus Jonassen Bering was sent by Peter the Great to explore the water routes between Siberia and North America, proving that North America and Asia were not connected. In 1741, another voyage to North America ended in shipwreck. Bering eventually perished on the uninhabited island subsequently named after him.

A Desperate Crossing: The Untold Story of The Mayflower is a three-hour documentary special which reveals the true story behind the first Thanksgiving and the Pilgrim Fathers’ voyage to America aboard the Mayflower. The series aired originally in the USA on The History Channel in November 2006 as three hour-long episodes.

The Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony are a small band of religious extremists who flee persecution in Europe in the hopes of creating a more godly society in the New World. Condemned as traitors in England and forced into a life of exile and poverty in Holland, the group decides to risk all and take their chances in the wilds of America. In the autumn of 1620, over one hundred Separatists and a crew of sailors huddled together in the small hold of the Mayflower as it battled through fierce storms and struggled across the unforgiving seas of the North Atlantic. Upon finally reaching land, every day was fraught with dangerous weather, disease, malnourishment, and finally the difficulty of trying to reach an understanding with the Native Americans. After much turmoil and hardship the colonists form a cohesive group and find a way to forge a life for themselves in America, learning from and creating a fragile, temporary truce with the native peoples. From the treacherous ocean passage to the first years of struggle to establish a new home, the story of Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony is the story of America - with all its contradictions.

Every American knows the story of the Pilgrims, their courageous voyage on the Mayflower and the first Happy Thanksgiving. But the homogenized and sanitized history learned as children and revisited every Thanksgiving holiday bears faint resemblance to the actual people and dramatic events of that desperate time. This three-hour special from the makers of Witch Hunt and Conquest of America uses dramatic re-enactments based on original source material to bring to life the true story of the Puritans’ terrible plight.

The program is filmed in HD primarily at Plimoth Plantation in Massachusetts, but also at other period-appropriate locations in England, Belgium, Maryland, and Virginia and includes interviews with 15 leading American, Native American and British scholars. Actors from The Royal Shakespeare Company join members of the Massachusetts Wampanoag tribe in creating dramatic period re-enactments that bring to life the Pilgrims’ harrowing journey and first year of survival. The program features all of the key characters in the Pilgrim saga: chroniclers William Bradford and Edward Winslow, Pastor John Robinson, organiser William Brewster, military leader Myles Standish, protagonist King James I, Massassoit (or chief) Osemequan, translator Squanto, and many more, as well as the wives and family members of the settlers.

A Desperate Crossing: The Untold Story of The Mayflower digs deeper into the facts than any previous documentary, to paint a devastating picture of the difficult lives of these early immigrants. Based on meticulous historical research and original source material including William Bradford’s first-hand account, Of Plymouth Plantation, the program recreates the fascinating world of the Pilgrims in all its complexity.

Documentary exploring the increasingly popular world of competitive eating, discovering how Britain has begun to embrace America’s love of super-sized food challenges. The programme takes a look at competitions in the USA such as New York’s famous Independence Day hotdog eating contest, which is watched by thousands every year. In contrast, the slightly more eccentric eating competitions here in the UK include Whitstable’s annual oyster eating contest, the very painful World Stinging Nettle Championship in Dorset, and the festival of fiery foods in Brighton.

In 1908, the French banker and philanthropist Albert Kahn launched one of the most ambitious projects in the history of photography. A pacifist, internationalist and utopian idealist, Kahn decided to use his private fortune to improve understanding between the nations of the world. To this end, he created what he called his Archive of the Planet. For the next two decades, he dispatched professional photographers to document the everyday lives of people in more than 50 countries all around the world. Kahn’s wealth enabled him to supply his photographers with the most advanced camera technology available. They used the autochrome - the first user-friendly camera system capable of producing true-colour photographs.

Some of the most important of all the 72,000 colour images in Kahn’s Archive were shot during three separate visits (in 1908, 1912 and 1926) to Japan. As an international financier, Kahn had established a network of contacts that included some of the most prominent members of Japan’s business, banking and political elites. Consequently, Kahn’s photographers were granted privileged access to places that would have otherwise been off limits - including some of the royal palaces, where they shot colour portraits of the princes and princesses from Japan’s Imperial family. But some of their most fascinating images capture moments from the lives of ordinary Japanese people at work and play. This film showcases Kahn’s treasury of films and autochromes of silk- farmers, Shinto monks, schoolchildren, porcelain merchants, Kabuki stars and geishas - pictures that were recorded at a time when this fascinating country was going through momentous changes.

The Archive of the Planet was the brainchild of the millionaire French banker and philanthropist Albert Kahn. Between 1908 and 1930, he used his vast personal fortune to generate what is now generally acknowledged to be the most important collection of early colour photographs in the world. At the time Kahn embarked on this project, colour photography was still in its infancy. It was only a year before the Archive was created that the legendary French inventors Auguste and Louis Lumière had marketed the autochrome - the world’s first user-friendly photographic system capable of taking true colour pictures.

Almost straight away, Kahn acquired one. It’s not difficult to see why Kahn was so beguiled: the autochrome system produces images of mesmerising beauty. As an idealist and an internationalist, Kahn believed that he could use this system to promote peace and greater understanding among the world’s cultures. So he spent a fortune to hire photographers and send them to more than 50 countries all over the world. Altogether, they shot more than 72,000 colour pictures (as well as about 100 hours of film footage) recording everything from religious rituals and cultural practices to momentous political events all over the world.

They took the earliest known colour pictures in countries as far apart as Vietnam and Brazil, Mongolia and Norway, Japan and Benin. As pet projects go, this was very ambitious - and vastly expensive. Yet undaunted by the cost, Kahn bankrolled this enterprise for more than 20 years. Kahn’s photographers undertook these intrepid expeditions without the global transit systems we take for granted today. Often, they arrived in these countries at crucial junctures in their history. For example, they recorded the collapse of both the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires - and the birth of completely new states in Europe and the Middle East. During World War I, Kahn’s photographers observed soldiers as they cooked their meals and laundered their uniforms behind the front lines at The Battle of Verdun. They watched the world’s most powerful men when they convened for the post-war negotiations at Versailles.

No doubt Kahn expected to have the financial wherewithal to sustain it indefinitely. But events delivered a hammer-blow to his plans. At the start of 1929, Kahn was still one of the richest men in Europe. But by the end of the year the Wall Street Crash had reduced the financial empire of one of Europe’s most successful financiers to rubble.

Yet by then, Kahn had already amassed one of the most important photographic collections in the world. A century after he launched his project, Albert Kahn’s dazzling pictures put colour into what we almost always think of as an exclusively monochrome age.

BBC Four 4 Thu 19 Apr, 2007, 21:00-22:00 (BST)

This programme tells the story of Albert Kahn, and the invention of the autochrome, the camera system that made colour photography possible and shows the pictures Kahn’s photographers shot in 1913, when they made their first visit to London, Cornwall and Ireland.

BBC Four Thu 26 Apr, 2007, 21:00-22:00 (BST)

This programme tells the story of two of the most ambitious of all the early global expeditions undertaken by the project - the circumnavigation of the globe by Albert Kahn and his chauffeur Alfred Dutertre in 1908-9 (in which they visited the USA, Japan and China); and the epic 1913 journey by one of Kahn’s photographers, Stéphane Passet, to China, Mongolia and India.

BBC Four Thu 3 May, 2007, 21:00-22:00 (BST)

This programme tells the story of Kahn’s photographer Auguste Léon visit to Scandinavia in 1910, finding widespread deprivation and even famine. He also journeyed to Italy in 1913, and then to the Balkans, where he recorded the increasing volatility in Europe.

BBC Four Thu 10 May, 2007, 21:00-22:00 (BST)

During the First World War, Kahn dispatched his photographers to the battlefields, where they recorded in detail the everyday lives of French troops fighting on the Western Front. This programme shows the images they captured as they journeyed through Eastern France.

BBC Four Thu 17 May, 2007, 21:00-22:00 (BST)

Throughout The Great War, Kahn’s photographers travelled throughout France, documenting the impact of the conflict on non-combatants in the towns and villages of their homeland. Using the striking images captured by Kahn’s photographers, this programme looks at the hardship and heroism of the French population living near the front lines of the conflict.
