Human bones found on an idyllic beach in Antigua trigger an investigation by naval historian Dr Sam Willis into one of the darkest chapters of Britain’s imperial past. As archaeologists excavate a mass grave of British sailors, Willis explores Antigua’s ruins and discovers how the sugar islands of the Caribbean were a kind of hell in the age of Nelson. Sun, sea, war, tropical diseases and poisoned rum.

Throughout the 17th century the Dutch and English fought desperate wars over which country would dominate world trade for the next two centuries. They waged massive sea battles in Europe and embarked on violent raids in Asia, Africa and North America. This brilliant two-part series employs drama, large- scale re-enactments, computer animation and interviews to chronicle these fierce struggles, such as that between the King of England, Charles II and Johann de Witt, the bold and able Dutch leader who stopped a war the young Dutch Republic could not win. Computer generated 3D animation reveals, for the first time, what sea battles between hundreds of large sailing warships looked like. Naval experts describe the tactics and technologies of large sailing ships capable of half-ton broadsides and fleets with more firepower than any land army, while historians provide a modern-day perspective of how political leaders responded for the first time to the demand for freedom of conscience and religion.

From the initial idea through the reconstruction process to the triumphant moment when her sails filled again, THE GREAT SHIPS tells one of the great stories in maritime history. See how the ancient vessel was made seaworthy again, and hear of the baffling problems that almost derailed the dream from Charles Dean, who was in charge of the restoration. Maritime experts trace the illustrious history of Old Ironsides, and period art and accounts celebrate her prowess in battle. With the raising of the sails, one journey is over and another begun. Thrill to the sight of the oldest warship on earth underway as the historic sail is captured by cameras on deck, in the air, and on land.

The Liners tells for the first time the global story of these great ships - an epic story inextricably linked with epic world events. It’s a remarkable voyage from the earliest days of the first paddle-wheeled superliner; through their use in times of war as well as peace; into the present and beyond, for a preview of giant ocean-going cities already in the advanced planning stages.

In the first programme in the series looks at the quantum leap forward from the converted sailing ships of the early 19th century to the majestic floating palaces at see 100 years later, which began with the building of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s Great Western in 1837.

Despite the outbreak of World War I, the trans-ocean liners continued to py their opulent trade across the Atlantic until, in 1916, the Lusitania was attascked and sunk, with horrifying loss of life, by the German navy. Con- tinued attacks over the following months were one of the major factors that saw America enter the war and, ironically, Germany’s greatest liners, strand- ed in New York harbour, were impounded and used to ferry the troops over to France. Post war years saw the liners of all nations sailing the seas again this time taking immigrants to America and, in the Prohibition years in America, providing legal off shore havens for revellers. However, the key years were 1927-1936, as France, Germany, Italy and Britain launched liners that were to become legends.

The third programme in the series looks at the development of the luxurious and spectacular liners of the 1930s, which saw the British Queen Mary' and the French linerNormandie’ set records for both style and speed and of their Second World War service as troop ships, along with other liners. The programme looks at some of the liners that were lost during the war, including the Italian Rex', the GermanWilhelm Gustloff’, and the Cap Arcona', which was carrying concentration camp survivors, 5000 of whom died. The immediate post-war years on the Atlantic route was a bonanza period for British liners, with the shipping companies, especially Cunard, owners of theQueen Mary’ and the Queen Elizabeth', making a lot of money from transatlantic customers. New competition arose from the US, however, with the launching of the new super- liner, theUnited States’, which broke the pre-war record of the `Queen Mary' for crossing the Atlantic. The only possible source of competition to the lucrative trade was to come from the emerging commercial operations of the airline companies with their new jet engines.

The last programme in the series on the history of ocean-going liners. With passenger aeroplanes in the ascendant, liner companies responded to dwindling demand in the sixties by building larger and more extravagant ships. It was an audacious move but a highly successful one and major operators still compete to build the biggest and best liner. Today, cruisers are expanding into fully- fledged entertainment centres.

Discover the technology that drives military conflicts

On land, at sea, and in the air, the story of modern warfare is the story of weapons races. This series looks at eight of these high-stakes contests. Featuring informative expert commentaries by renowned military analysts, archival footage, and illuminating graphics, it shows how technological advances have transformed warfare in today’s world.

Follow the weapons races as they pass through the two world wars, Korea and Vietnam, the Cold War, and the various conflicts of the Middle East and the Persian Gulf, right up to the 21st century. Trace the stages of each race, from original concept and early breakthroughs to enemy countermeasures and current state of the art. Finally, learn how innovators have pushed the technological limits–of speed, endurance, maneuverability, range, accuracy, and firepower–to produce the killing machines of today.

Since 1990, the British team of Philip Nugus and Jonathan Martin has created popular, critically acclaimed historical documentaries, including Hitler’s Bodyguard and The Century of Warfare.

Take a look at the requirements such as speed, endurance, maneuverability, and fire power that pushed designers to explore the technological limits of the F-22 Raptor.

Take a look at how these monsters were shaped in combat; how the competing requirements of protection, cross-country ability and firepower were refined; and how tactics such as Blitzkrieg were developed to make the Battletank the king of the battlefield.

When strategic bombing was conceived, men began to look at ways of detecting it - or at evading this detection. Take a look at developments in this technology, considering the most extraordinary ways of spotting military and civil machines.

Take an in-depth look at the nuclear weapons race as the Soviet Union used every means possible - particularly espionage to catch up with the United States - and then competed to produce smaller and more deadly bombs.

Examine the elements of range, payload, protection and performance which convinced military theorists that the B-2A Spirit stealth bomber was the ultimate weapon. Find out how their hopes and fears were tested in combat.

This program looks at the men who first conceived the idea of long-range rockets, their successes and failures, and the way in which the nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile became the most powerful weapon ever known to man.

Look at the way in which both the technology and the tactics of submarine warfare were adapted and developed during the Cold War, and how boats like the USS Virginia and the Russian Akula are today’s most powerful and deadly naval units.

The program looks at the evolution of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, and how the aircraft carrier adapted into a floating military base of extraordinary potency.

They were the only thing that really frightened me. So said the usually steadfast Winston Churchill of the German Navy’s U-boat fleet - the dreaded Wolf Pack which stalked the Atlantic depths, bringing instant death to merchantman and warship alike. Together with a formidable surface fleet, the U-boats challenged the Royal Navy’s traditional supremacy of the oceans, countering Britain’s strength in numbers with reign of silent terror. A decade of secret rebuilding had brought forth capital ships like Scharnhorst, Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen - names to strike fear into any allied seafarer. But it was from under the water that the biggest threat was to come. Commanded by Admiral Karl Doenitz, the submarines laid waste to shipping, cutting supply lines and striking from within convoys where Allied escorts dare not use guns. The U-boat captains were the equivalent of Luftwaffe aces - ruthless, cunning and ice-cool under pressure.

In World War II, lethal German U-Boats sailed all over the world wreaking havoc and destruction. This unique DVD charts the true, close-run fight that took place. With rare, original footage of actual battle scenes and interviews with U-Boat commanders and crew members from both the Allied and Axis naval forces, these three programs give the viewer an inside look at the destructive nature of these deadly “Iron Coffins”.

U-Boats were active from the first day of the war to the last. The menace provoked Winston Churchill to write, “The threat the U-Boats posed in the Atlantic was the only thing that really frightened me during the war. On their defeat hung the outcome of World War II.” Witness the actions of the famed Wolf Packs in this riveting episode.

From New York to Florida, Americans were unaware that just a few miles off their shores, Hitler’s U-Boats lurked ready to strike against their country. The German U-Boat fleet terrorized American coastal waters and vessel after vessel went down in one of the greatest maritime disasters of all time.

e largest U-Boat housed 44 crew members who lived in their weapons of war for days on end in cramped and squalid conditions. Of the 38,000 men who fought in these machines during World War II, 30,000 would die in their iron coffins. Experience the Allied strategies and tactics of 1943 that caused the men in the U-Boats to suffer the highest mortality rate of any fighting unit in the history of war.

“It was the longest single battle of World War II. For nearly six years, Allied supply ships and their armed escorts conducted a deadly cat-and-mouse game with Nazi submarines, which lurked beneath the waters, poised to sever the vital lifeline that kept England in the conflict.

DEATH OF THE WOLFPACKS chronicles this long battle, from the early days when the U-boats enjoyed virtually unchallenged dominance of the North Atlantic to the final movement of the war, when Admiral Doenitz’s once-vaunted wolfpacks were being sunk at a nearly 60% rate. Military historians detail the pivotal events in the long fight, including the entry of the United States into the war, the capture of an “Enigma” code machine and Hitler’s refusal to provide his admiral with the vessels he needed to continue fighting effectively.

This is the authoritative examination of the battle that Winston Churchill called the dominating factor throughout the entire course of the war in Europe.”
