A two-part portrait of Elizabeth II’s grandparents, King George V and Queen Mary, which examines the lasting legacy of the couple who rescued the monarchy from potential disaster, and whose influence persists to this day.

George could not have been a more unlikely moderniser. Born and brought up in the Victorian age he was conservative to his fingertips. Yet in the face of unstoppable social change after the First World War he turned out to be a remarkable innovator, creating the House of Windsor, embracing democratic reform, and reinventing many of the royal traditions that we know today. When he celebrated his silver jubilee in 1935 the monarchy was more popular than ever. But as a parent King George V was far less successful - he bullied his children and alienated his eldest son and heir, Prince Edward. As one courtier remarked at the time, ’the royal family are like ducks, they sit on their children’. By contrast, King George had a loving relationship with his granddaughter, and much of Queen Elizabeth’s style and commitment to duty can be traced back to this early influence.

Queen Mary, who came from a relatively humble royal background, but was picked as a future queen consort by Queen Victoria. At first she was betrothed to Prince Eddy, heir to the throne. But when Eddy died she was unceremoniously passed to his brother George. Despite the arranged marriage, King George and Queen Mary had a loving relationship. Mary revered the monarchy and obeyed her husband in all things - even the length of her dresses. She always put duty and service first. But when King George died in 1936, this once rigidly formal character emerged as a determined if eccentric royal matriarch with a mind of her own. When the abdication crisis threatened the future of the House of Windsor she was the rock to which the nation turned as a symbol of stability and continuity. Queen Mary died in 1953, having lived to see her granddaughter, Elizabeth, ascend to the throne.

The Tower, an observational documentary which has been filmed over three years, charts the urban regeneration of the notoriously troubled Pepys Estate in South London. A property developer is turning a dilapidated former council high-rise into luxury riverside apartments and another is being demolished and rebuilt for public sector workers. The changes are happening under the gaze of those still living in the original local authority houses next door. The experiences and opinions of those still living on the estate, and those moving into the chic new homes capture a key period of transition in contemporary London. The glittering tower of Canary Wharf looms large over the riverside location and the economic ripples it creates, along with a booming economy, have brought an affluent generation to the neighbourhood in search of views of the Thames and an easy commute to the office. Property prices are simply too high for those who are from the area to buy a house there. The series features poignant portrayals of residents including Leol, a heroin addict, and his friend Nicky, an alcoholic, who met in a skip where they were collecting scrap metal to sell; Edith, mother of six children and heavily pregnant, who lives virtually alone in Dickensian conditions amongst rats and burst water pipes in the block to be demolished; young parents Kelly and Wayne, who are looking forward to their marriage; and Doug, who runs the local boozer, The John Evelyn. Doug hopes it will attract the fashionable new clientele, but the locals describe it as “God’s waiting room”. The Tower: A Tale of Two Cities won the best factual series BAFTA award in 2008.

Five years after Lewisham council sold off one of its riverside tower blocks to be transformed into chic apartments for young professionals, the transformation of the Tower is due to begin. Before the private developers can move in, however, all the old tenants must go. Les Brooks, a professional clown, is the last existing occupant in the Tower and he’s refusing to go quietly. Elsewhere on the estate, his neighbours have their own private battles to fight.

The last tenant has been removed from the ex council tower block. The developers Berkley homes can now start the renovation. Their marketing department are keen to sell the virtues of riverside living, but on the estate there are others who are desperate to leave. Edith Corlis is expecting her seventh baby, her block too is due for redevelopment and most of her neighbours have left. However, she is stuck and the squatters have moved in and are making her life a misery. Although Kelley Garcia, Edith’s best friend, has patched up her relationship with Wayne they have a more pressing crisis at home with their young son Tyrell. Lol Gilbert has failed to win his girlfriend back and has taken up again with the other love of his life, heroin. Strong language.

Inside the Tower, the interior designers are hard at work creating the dream of sky-high modern urban living. While publicans Doug and Brenda Elsley face bankruptcy as their regular customers drift away, successful restauranteur Bambos Manoros has bought two flats. Plus Edith Corlis is ready to move to her new home, but first she has to give birth to her seventh child.

With the show flats in the Tower selling fast, two prospective purchasers are excited by the dream of modern living. However, first they are due to marry and Saima is experiencing some doubts about what married life with Usman will actually be like. Eight-year-old Chantelle is afraid to leave her flat as she tries to come to terms with a dad who’s never there. Bambos’s family are not so sure that they want to all live together on a street in the sky.

Love is in the air in the Tower and on the estate. Kelley Garcia finally weds Wayne Tapper, with half of the estate in tow. Newcomers Saima and Usman are now in Pakistan for their arranged wedding and any room for doubt is rapidly running out. For devout Muslim Shakor, life after an arranged marriage means coping with a wife and kids and making a life on the estate. However the summer of love on the estate is abruptly disrupted. The 7/7 bombings send shock waves through the community.

Nessar’s wealthy family have bought several new properties in the Tower, but before she can move in she must pass her law exams and win her dream job in the city. On the estate, Lol Gilbert’s health is rapidly deteriorating after years of heroin abuse. When his close friend Tony overdoses, Lol goes too far, while Tony’s grief-stricken mother Cherie tries to repair her life after years of heroin abuse in the family.

The Tower is complete and the first of the new tenants move in, including gay couple David and Paul. While Saima and Usman get used to married life, some harsh realities begin to come home to them. Elsewhere, retired gangster Harry Hayward feels overwhelmed by the changes, and Lol Gilbert’s drug use continues as his friend Nicky plans his escape.

The Tower is now fully occupied. For the residents this is a new beginning, but it is the end of an era for Deptford. The most expensive penthouse has been bought by 27-year-old millionaire property developer Guy Bullerwell whose company buys up, on average, a house a day in south east London. The ex- council houses are rented out to young professionals who work across the river in Canary Wharf. Retired gangster Harry Hayward and his band of Deptford pensioners don’t recognise their part of town now, so with his best friend fighting for his life in hospital and his funding drying up the future is not bright for the reformed villain. For Lol Gilbert the prospect of a life of lonely drug abuse without his friend Nicky is finally sinking in. But Nicky has one last surprise for his friend.

Armando Iannucci examines the work of Charles Dickens. Through the prism of the author’s most autobiographical novel, David Copperfield, Armando looks beyond Dickens - the national institution - and instead explores the qualities of Dickens’s work which make him one of the best British writers. While Dickens is often celebrated for his powerful depictions of Victorian England and his role as a social reformer, this programme foregrounds the elements of his writing which make him worth reading, as much for what he tells us about ourselves in the twenty-first century as our ancestors in the nineteenth. Armando argues that Dickens’s remarkable use of language and his extraordinary gift for creating characters make him a startlingly experimental and psychologically penetrating writer who demands not just to be adapted for television but to be read and read again.

Charles Rangeley Wilson, author, journalist and BBC 2’s Accidental Angler, travels to Japan to explore the Japanese people’s passionate relationship to fish. Of all the island nations on Earth, there is, perhaps, none quite as obsessed by fish as Japan. Whether for food or entertainment, fish are at the very core of Japanese identity. From their reverential love of jewel-like koi to the seemingly barbaric world of scientific whaling via the submarine ballet of the drive hunt, there are few corners of Japanese culture that have not been shaped by reference to fish. Trying to comprehend this ‘alien’ culture, Charles embarks on a six-week odyssey through Japan, determined to use his love of fish and fishing as the common point of interest between himself and those he meets along the way. Since he loves fish possibly even more than the Japanese, they must have plenty in common…

Alan Titchmarsh presents a stunning series that reveals the amazing secrets behind Britain’s great gardens, examining how they continue to influence gardeners, including himself, today.

In the first episode, Alan visits Hatfield House in Hertfordshire to look at the key design features of the gardens of this 17th-century stately home. This was a time when horticulture and architecture worked seamlessly together and Hatfield reflects this new love of the aesthetic. Alan examines the famous parterres which are some of the first examples of Britain’s affection for formal gardening, and shows how the parterre has been brought into the 21st century by designer Tom Stuart-Smith with his designs at Broughton Grange in Oxfordshire. Alan also looks at the use of perspective, which at Hatfield makes the driveways seem bigger and changes how the garden is seen from different points of view. He look at a French import, espaliers, that have been used to stunning effect in Hatfield and show how these have changed the way we contort trees in our garden, including his own tip on stepover apple trees. Plus, he reveals how our affection for topiary began in gardens such as this where they were originally seen as architectural forms, complementing the design of the house. Alan shows in his own garden that you don’t need to plant hedges to achieve this, creating a portable sedum cube.

Few gardening movements can match the impact of the 18th-century landscape movement, and Stowe in Buckinghamshire is one of the most important examples of their revolutionary designs. Here we find a rejection of the rigid formality of the previous century and an embracing of nature, no matter what the ecological cost. Alan demonstrates how they ‘borrowed’ views, manipulating the landscape to draw the eye to certain features. Creating a focal point is now a staple of modern garden design and Alan shows how it can accentuate a garden’s best bits and also be used to hide things. Designers such as Bridgeman at Stowe were the first to sculpt huge areas of lawn, and Alan meets Kim Wilkie who is creating his own modern version of this type of lawn at Boughton Park. And Alan shows how the landscape movement pioneered the meandering path and placed statues and buildings in key places, aging them deliberately to fit with the landscape. Alan shares his own tips on aging, and how to recreate this type of ‘set dressing’ in a garden.

The Victorians gave us a taste for exotic plants from around the world, a thirst for technology in the garden and a love of bold statements. Biddulph Grange, in Staffordshire, is a classic example of all these elements. The Victorians were transforming the garden from the natural landscapes of the 18th century to a new manufactured style. Alan comments how Biddulph is ‘a world in one garden’ made up of separate highly stylized designs inspired by China, Italy, Egypt and Scotland. These gardens are a setting for plant life from around the world and Alan explains how the Victorians were passionate plant hunters, particularly for orchids. He also shows us how to plant and care for exotics in our own garden. The Victorians also invented ways to transport and care for these rare plants. Alan demonstrates how they revolutionized growing under glass, building some of the biggest glasshouses in the world. There was also a passion for elaborate and gaudy display at this time with the creation of the carpet bed - a true symbol of Victorian knowledge and power. Alan shows us how to create one that will complement our own modern garden. A passion for technology was also transforming the kitchen garden and the Victorians established practices for produce growing that survive today. Alan reveals the key things to remember when growing vegetables.

Alan reveals how Sissinghurst gardens in Kent is one of the most influential of the 20th century. Created by two passionate gardeners, Vita Sackville-West and her husband, Sir Harold Nicholson, its development coincided with key social changes in the British garden. There was a pre- and post-war boom in surburban housing, creating a generation of domestic gardeners. Despite its size, Sissinghurst appealed to the public because it was a warm and intimate garden and had been designed with a great many practical uses. Alan reveals that it was one of the first lifestyle gardens, made up of different ‘rooms’ designed for eating, relaxing and entertaining. Ideas that would lead to today’s barbecue areas and daybed chillout zones in the garden began here. Alan shows his own take on the garden room, designing an outdoor dining table filled with herb and fruit plants. Vita Sackville West was also hugely influential in her use of colour. She used many colours to create a single hue and Alan reveals the myriad of colours in her famous purple border. She was also the first to create an all white garden. Sissinghurst is also famous for its naturalistic planting and Alan discusses how it works with head gardener Alexis Data. He also shows us how to create a wild flower meadow. And finally we learn that one part of Sissinghurst, the nuttery, would become famous as one of the first wild gardens. This new philosopohy would ultimately lead to todays perma culture gardens. Alan shows you how to create one in your own garden.

The most famous aerial fighting group of World War II, the Black Sheep Squadron officially shot down 100 planes and may have unofficially shot down another 100. Led by Major Gregory “Pappy” Boyington, the self-proclaimed “bad boy” of the Marines, in point of fact, the only so-called “screw-up” in the famed unit. The Black Sheep were a motley group of fly boys who rallied around their commander who inspired them where it counted most in combat.

David Suchet boards the world’s most iconic train to unravel the mystery of the Orient Express, for a brand new ITV1 documentary. David Suchet on the Orient Express features the actor immersing himself in the romance and escapism of a train immortalised in the Agatha Christie novel, Murder on the Orient Express, whose protagonist, detective Hercule Poirot, he has so memorably portrayed on screen. David resolves to uncover why the Orient Express has been the world’s most talked about train for over a century and why Agatha Christie, the world’s most celebrated crime author, chose the train for her most ingenious murder mystery. On a journey that takes him from London Victoria, through Venice and Austria and onto Prague, David experiences the glamour, history and luxury of the train, while making new friends along the way. David meets the train’s staff to discover how they keep the train on track and mingles with his fellow passengers to experience the ups and downs of 1920’s style luxury as 21st century travellers sacrifice speed and space for charm and elegance. The film draws on archive material to conjure up the rich history surrounding the Orient Express, from its inaugural ‘Express d’Orient’ journey across Europe on October 4th 1883, its glamorous heyday in the early 20th century when it was a magnet for royalty as well as spies including Mata Hari and Robert Baden Powell, to its fascinating role in both World Wars. David also traces its post-war decline, describing how competition from cheap air travel led to its closure in the late 1970s before its current revival.

Dinosaur Wars, from producer Mark Davis, is the story of two talented scientists, O.C. Marsh and Edward Cope, whose once professional rivalry soured into a bitter personal feud. Together, Marsh and Cope were responsible for identifying more than 142 different species and for introducing dinosaurs into the American imagination, but their legacy would be forever marred by two decades of ruthless infighting, espionage, and sabotage. In 1870, America’s untamed West was dry, sparsely vegetated, and constantly eroding. But beneath the surface lay a treasure unlike any in the world: the bones of countless prehistoric creatures. For the emerging field of American paleontology, this discovery offered an opportunity to piece together and explain nothing less than the history of life on Earth, and to prove Darwin’s hotly disputed theory of evolution.

In northern New Mexico, a mountain range rises more than a mile above the surrounding desert, a wild, rugged land of the Faraway Nearby. The volcanic Jemez Mountains are isolated from all other ranges - an island in the sky, surrounded by a desert sea. In Sky Island, environmental filmmaker John Grabowska (Ribbon of Sand, Crown of the Continent) profiles this enchanting landscape and our place within it, with dramatic climate change effects already transforming the desert and alpine ecosystem.

The famed Outer Banks of North Carolina are a slim and moving line of sand in the open Atlantic. Many travelers think they know these islands. But south of Ocracoke Inlet rises a luminous bar of sand sixty miles in extent, with no roads, no bridges, no hotels – only the wild beaches of Cape Lookout, one of the few remaining natural barrier island systems in the world.
