Scottish movie star Alan Cumming takes a tour of the locations of some classic Scottish movies. Film experts and actors, including Peter Mullen and David Hayman, compare Braveheart and Rob Roy, while Edinburgh’s contribution to Scottish cinema is celebrated by the contrasting films The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and Trainspotting. Director Bill Forsyth meets Cumming in Cumbernauld, the setting of Forsyth’s film Gregory’s Girl, and explains why the new town was such a fitting location.

Timeshift reveals the history of Antarctica, finding out why the most inhospitable place on the planet has exerted such a powerful hold on the imagination of explorers, scientists, writers and photographers. From the logbooks of Captain Cook to the diaries of Scott and Shackleton, from the Rime of the Ancient Mariner to HP Lovecraft, it’s a film about real and imaginary tales of adventure, romance and tragedy that have played out against a stark white backdrop. It relives the race to the Pole; finds out what it takes to survive the cold and ‘polar madness’; shows how Herbert Ponting’s photographs of the Scott expedition helped define our image of the continent; finds out why it witnessed a thaw in Russian and American relations during the Cold War; reveals who actually owns Antarctica; and shows how science is helping us re- imagine a frozen wasteland as something more precious.

Interviewees include Ranulph Fiennes, Francis Spufford, Huw Lewis-Jones, Sara Wheeler and Henry Worsley.

Under the blazing Idaho sun, he wears a Stetson and a t-shirt that reads ‘Smoke a Pack a Day’ but he’s no Marlboro Man. His pick-up offers up another hint - another slogan as he slams the tailgate shut and reveals a licence plate that reads ‘No Wolfs’.

Ron Gillette is one of a number of outspoken hunters taking aim at an animal that is returning in number to the wilds of his western state. The Canadian or Gray wolf.

“I think if the devil had an animal it would be the wolf - no question about it. In my thinking Bin Laden is a classic example of a foreign terrorist. The wolf is the wildlife terrorist.” RON GILLETTE, HUNTER & ANTI-WOLF CAMPAIGNER

The wolf all but disappeared from the spectacular countryside but a long stretch on the endangered species list offered protection from shooters and re-introduction and regeneration programs have meant that the wolf has once again become a significant predator in the forests.

For Ron it’s a menace growing out of control.

For others like Nancy Taylor it’s a magnificent creature that should be allowed to roam wild in the woods. Nancy runs a preservation project called Wolf People and breeds wolves in captivity.

“The Little Red Riding Hood stories from Europe really, really hurt the wolf and they’re still hurting him today. They make the wolf out to be a monster, a snarling evil creature which he isn’t.” NANCY TAYLOR ‘WOLF PEOPLE’

Nancy, conservationists, courts and the local Indian tribe the Nez Perce have all managed to stare down the hunters. After the wolf was dropped from the protected species list a hunting season was set and would have been well underway by now but an appeal relisted the wolf, the season suspended and hunters were forced to lower their sights.

In this breathtakingly beautiful Foreign Correspondent shot by cameraman Louie Eroglu and reported by Michael Brissenden all sides – ranchers, Indians, conservationists and hunters - square off, for and agin’ the wolf.

“You know if there was ever a time for civil disobedience its now and it’s over this wolf problem.” RON GILLETTE

“If somebody were to threaten my wolves I would step in front of them and take the bullet.” NANCY TAYLOR

It used to be nondescript parcels on the doorstep, cryptic phone calls at midnight or shadowy meetings in underground car parks.

Now explosive information is more likely to arrive - to the tune of a novelty sound effect - in an email.

But profound and important questions surround the transaction of secret, highly sensitive, classified material. Governments and big business are fiercely protective of their internal dynamics and increasingly are coming down hard on leakers and whistleblowers. The public though demand and defend their right to know when governments they’ve installed are making decisions on their behalf, or the actions of big business impact their lives.

And so a group of one-time hackers and activists are trying to build a global truth machine.

They call it WikiLeaks.

“We want to create a system where there is guaranteed free press across the world, the entire world….. that every individual in the world has the ability to publish material that is meaningful”. JULIAN ASSANGE – FOUNDER WIKILEAKS

A hesitant, quietly spoken Australian named Julian Assange has become the global face of a nebulous operation with secret computer servers in a number of countries and aspirations to build an information freedom zone – the leaker’s equivalent of a tax haven – in, where else – Iceland.

WikiLeaks exploded into prominence earlier this year when it released hitherto top secret video of a helicopter gunship strafing and killing more than a dozen people in Baghdad including media covering the war.

The Wiki-team spent some time stripping the video of any electronic fingerprints that would expose the insiders who leaked it and then launched it on-line under the banner ‘Collateral Murder’ replete with damning Orwellian quotes. Critics call this activism not journalism.

“They provided artificial agenda driven context . There was an operation underway in reaction to an ongoing war. Not that apache helicopters were circling looking for a bunch of guys to just shoot up and kill”. DAVID FINKEL – WASHINGTON POST

Foreign Correspondent’s Andrew Fowler enters the guarded, sometimes paranoid world of Wiki - talking extensively to Assange, supporters like Daniel Ellsberg who gave the world the Pentagon Papers as well as critics who see the operation as a reckless, potentially dangerous activist outpost.

As this intriguing Foreign Correspondent takes shape a military insider has been arrested on suspicion of leaking the Baghdad video and Assange has – according to colleagues – gone into hiding.

In a prison within a prison in central Java, some of Indonesia’s most dedicated and destructive terrorists are doing time for deadly crime.

There’s Abdul Ghoni who mixed the explosive cocktail that rocked Bali’s Kuta nightclub district in 2002 killing hundreds. Nearby, Anif Sochannudin wanders the prison courtyard. He volunteered to carry an explosive back-pack into a beachfront restaurant in Bali’s Jimabaran in the second wave of attacks in Bali. Someone else got the job and he got a prison term for his part in organising a bombing that killed 20. Abdul Aziz paces his cell anxiously awaiting parole and an end to his term for protecting terror king-pin, the late Noordin Mohammed Top.

They’re vehement Jihadis who have shown they’re prepared to take extreme action on behalf of Islam. Can they change? Well, many are changing for the worse.

Indonesia is discovering that many of its violent terrorist convicts are emerging from their prison punishment with a renewed zeal for jihad and are heading straight back into the terrorist fold.

“If I was still outside now it’s possible I would join the network again. Hate against the police has grown deep in my heart.” ANIF SOLCHANNUDIN – Terrorist

Indonesia Correspondent Matt Brown secured rare access to Java’s Kedungpane prison to examine why terrorism and recidivism are rusted together and what if anything Indonesian authorities are able to do about it. Worryingly - right now – that’s not much.

“What the police are doing today is just cutting the tip of the iceberg. We need to find out why this guy is going back to the network, there must be a problem. There must be a weakness.” Cdr. TITO KARNAVIAN - Counter terrorism Unit, Indonesia

With the sensational re-arrest of Jemaah Islamiyah father figure Abu Bakar Bashir and recidivists emerging in Aceh and from behind the smoking ruins of the Marriot in Jakarta, Brown discerns too little is being done by too few to address the problem.

“I think it’s extremely important for us to have de-radicalisation program, inside the prison and after because these people are driven by ideology. You can’t kill ideology by simply locking them in jail.” NOOR HUDA ISMAEL – Reform activist and author

They make Carrie Bradshaw and her gal pals look like stitched-up prudes and the Playboy Mansion a sleepy retirement home. They are Bonobos, the original swingers – frisky, fun loving apes and sex is never very far from their minds.

‘They have sex in all flavours. They’re bisexual; some people call them pansexual, female-female sex is actually the most common type of sex.’ Sally Coxe, Bonobo Conservation Initiative

In a remote corner of an isolated pocket of Africa, girl-power is proving to be a successful and cohesive community hierarchy. Bonobos have their spats but it rarely gets nasty. They care for each other and share with each other. It’s behaviour that’s in stark contrast to much of the human behaviour surrounding them and of course evident around the world.

The Bonobos are inhabitants of the Democratic Republic of Congo – a war torn, strife ridden, poverty struck nation that in recent decades has seen some of the very worst human behaviour possible.

Standing between the Bonobos and the encroaching human threat are a dedicated group of conservationists and aid workers trying to improve the often dire circumstances of locals and empower them to protect the Bonobos.

‘People are the threat to the bonobos and if we don’t take care of the people at the same time we’re not going to be taking care of the forest and the Bonobos.’ Sally Coxe, Bonobo Conservation Initiative

Eric Campbell ventures deep into the African jungle to see these extraordinary apes in the wild and to talk to the people trying to understand them and ensure that they prosper. Even now it’s incredibly difficult to reach the Bonobos’ jungle home. There are no commercial flights to the area, no roads - just bone-jarring tracks - and a couple of clapped out cars in the entire region. Locals walk or travel by dugout canoe. There’s no electricity or running water, and villagers still use drums to communicate.

Nevertheless it’s a fascinating and enthralling journey of discovery where we learn a great deal about the least understood of the Great Apes who make love not war.

China’s exponential growth took Australia along for the white-knuckled ride. It fuelled our resources boom and had economic optimists forecasting decades of good times. How things change.

Twenty million Chinese migrant workers have lost their jobs in the past six months as a result of the global recession. As demand for products made in China drops, so do the living standards of millions of Chinese who have been lifted out of poverty as a result of the market reforms of the past few decades.

China correspondent Stephen McDonell travels with some of the country’s blue collar factory workers as they leave their farms to look for work in the city.

They take an epic train journey from their remote village in the north of the country, to the industrial heartland of the south - the Pearl River delta, also known as the ‘world’s factory’.

Ironically, things had been looking up for the migrant workers until the financial tsunami hit late last year. Faced with a growing middle class and increasing worker unrest due to exploitation by unscrupulous employers, the Chinese government had introduced tougher labour laws giving workers greater rights.

Now employers are saying that in the current economic climate, they can’t afford to implement them. However, concerns about social unrest in the face of growing unemployment means the labour laws will probably remain in place.

There’s no question that China is experiencing a slow down - the big question is how slow, and how down? Australian workers are hoping that while twenty million Chinese have lost their jobs, some of ours will be saved by the fact that the world’s factory will continue to churn out products made in China.

In a small, grubby open shed a young woman picks a plastic piece from the pile in front of her, lights it, sniffs it to discern what sort of plastic it is and then consigns it to the appropriate recycling bin. Instantly the process is repeated and again, perhaps thousands of times during her shift. We can only guess at the cumulative damage she’s doing to herself.

In a small factory space workers apply a solvent to a well known computer logo before affixing them to laptops. They suffer chronic illness and end up in hospital with an uncertain future. Elsewhere we find workers from another much bigger factory convalescing from their protracted exposure to the same solvent used in their stage of the manufacturing process - cleaning the touch-screens of new generation devices. Some of these workers have been in hospital many months as their central nervous systems slowly repaired as best they could.

“I am back at work but my symptoms are still with me. My legs still hurt. This will accompany me for the rest of my life. It’s very painful.” COMPUTER ASSEMBLY WORKER

These are just a small grab-bag of scenes from a nation stunning the world with the scale and speed of its economic development and trying very hard to keep a lid on the grubby consequences. They’re scenes China’s authorities are not keen for you to see.

Nevertheless China Correspondent Stephen McDonell perseveres, taking us into remarkable, revealing and ultimately disturbing territory.

Rivers turned black and toxic, skies turned black and suffocating, there’s a big price being paid for the endless array of technological gadgetry and it’s not at western cash registers.

On this assignment, Stephen finds himself in the middle of an extraordinary melee. Orchardists in the beautiful hills above Minhou in the Fujian Province have grown frustrated and angry at the fallout from an incinerator burning spent hospital supplies even human organs discarded after surgeries.

No sooner does Stephen sit down to hear their complaints – including claims that the fallout has spiked cancer rates in the area – than government officials arrive to grill him about who tipped him off and to try to break up the gathering and shut down the interviews.

Remarkably the villagers protest and kick up such a storm the officials retreat.

If you’re reading this from a new generation touch-screen tablet you should not miss ‘Dirty Secrets’.

The River Wye runs through some of Britain’s most beautiful and varied countryside, from the mountain tops of mid Wales to the wide open spaces of the Severn Estuary. This film is a lyrical portrait of the valley through the eyes of four characters who make their living from the land: a cider maker, a salmon fisherman, a sheep farmer and a beekeeper. It might seem idyllic, but when you live this close to nature a change in the weather can make all the difference between success and failure.

Documentary following the lives of the members of the world’s largest wolf pack in Yellowstone National Park. Daughters plot behind their father’s back, sister slays sister and steals her lover, and a family is torn apart.

Produced in 2002 by Bob Landis for National Geographic
