“Mavi Marmara you are approaching an area of hostility! If you ignore this order and attempt to enter the blockaded area the Israeli Navy will be forced to take all necessary measures to enforce this blockade!”

So begins the a tense stand-off 150 kilometres off the coast of Gaza and in the dark hours that followed nine of the ship’s passengers died and many more – including seven Israeli commandos – were injured.

The appalling, bloody and ultimately deadly events in late-May this year this year onboard the Mavi Marmara remain clouded in claim and counter-claim.

The ship’s mission – according to the organisers – was to lead a flotilla sailing a course to and through Israel’s blockade of Gaza, delivering much needed aid but as the erstwhile Turkish cruise-liner bore down on the coast it predictably encountered a naval patrol unwilling to yield passage to the activists.

So what happened next and why did so much seemingly go so wrong?

Collision Course is the most detailed and revealing investigation of the ill fated voyage so far assembled. It sheds a great deal more light on this murky incident. From the BBC’s highly regarded Panorama team, the program features never-before-seen video from on-board the Mavi Marmara, goes inside Israel’s hitherto covert navy teams and hears accounts - never before heard - from those on-board the Mavi Marmara as well as from key Israeli commandos who stormed the vessel.

We learn a great deal more about IHH - the Turkish humanitarian group that organised the voyage - and a lot more about Israel’s preparedness and intelligence.

Were the leaders aboard the Mavi Marmara itching for a showdown as the Israeli’s claim or were they simply defending themselves and their vessel from what Turkey described as an act of piracy?

Collision Course is an important investigative contribution to our understanding of a black moment in recent history.

In a major investigation, Foreign Correspondent has unearthed a dramatic account of the war-time activities of Australia citizen and former Serbian paramilitary commander Dragan Vasiljkovic that goes beyond the borders of Croatia where he’s accused of war crimes.

A Bosnian woman speaks openly for the first time about her treatment at the hands of Vasiljkovic and his men claiming she was systematically abused and raped by the commander.

Vasiljkovic – also known as Daniel Snedden – is currently in Sydney’s Silverwater Prison awaiting final ministerial determination on his extradition to Croatia where a war crimes case is being assembled.

After a series of legal rulings going all the way to the High Court - which cleared the way for his dispatch to Croatia - a decision from Home Affairs Minister Brendan O’Connor is expected soon.

But his many supporters in Australia and Serbia are vowing to fight on and defeat the extradition.

Foreign Correspondent’s assembled a major assessment of the case for and against the man held up by Serbia as a national hero and despised by Croatia as a brutal and callous war criminal.

In her first major interview Vasiljkovic’s Australian wife Nada Lukich-Bruce speaks expansively to reporter Trevor Bormann in passionate defence of the man she first met behind bars. Vasiljkovic’s brother Michael also participates in our program as does a former soldier under Captain Dragan’s command. Her Royal Highness Princess Linda of Serbia tells Bormann how she believes emphatically that he is an honourable soldier deserving of his national hero status and utterly incapable of war crimes.

Conversely, Croatians in Foreign Correspondent’s program paint a starkly different picture.

We hear from police officers who recall their appalling treatment allegedly at the hands of Captain Dragan. The two men recount their ordeal of imprisonment and torture. In the Croatian capital Zagreb, Foreign Correspondent talks to the legal team assembling the case against Vasiljkovic and the former Justice minister who’s been relentlessly pursuing him for trial.

But it’s the account of the Bosnian woman that expands the range of his alleged behaviour – crimes strongly denied by Vasiljkovic and his supporters.

Thousands of square kilometres of white salt - flat as a marble bench and as far as the eye can see.

What you can’t see is the epic wealth lurking below the crust. The world’s biggest reserves of a mysterious, and increasingly valuable metal. Lithium.

Until recently its uses were limited and obscure. Lithium has been used to treat mental illness and to build nuclear weapons. But mobile phones, miniaturisation and now the flight to hybrid and electric vehicles has seen its uses and value soar. Lithium is an important ingredient enabling batteries to store and expel power.

Giant catfish the size of family refrigerators hide in the depths with 1200 other species of exotic wildlife. Further downstream there are rare and mysterious freshwater dolphins. By the time the Amazon of Asia - the mighty Mekong River - reaches Laos it’s already been put to serious use by the Chinese and now the little landlocked communist nation wants to do the same. Big-time.

It’s planning to plug in for its part in Asia’s economic boom by building dozens of dams on the Mekong and its tributaries. They’d drive hydro power stations making electricity for export and that that would transform a struggling minnow into The Battery of Asia.

But can the Mekong sustain the scale of the development underway and on the drawing board?
