Danny Wallace really wants a robot. He wants it to walk like him and talk like him. It’s what scientists have been promising us for generations but it’s a promise so far unfulfilled. Danny circumnavigates the globe searching for robot nirvana, trying to uncover how far away his dream is.

He discovers that the robotics world is as weird as it is insanely complicated. During his quest he meets a Japanese man who makes copies of himself and his daughter, an Italian who claims he’s found the key to human intelligence in a video game and a Singaporean whose unpromising-looking homage to Dusty Bin might just turn out to be the robot of Danny’s dreams.

A simple virus brewed in the belly of a dead bird is set to embark on a global killing spree. The likely culprit is H5N1 - a bird flu virus with the dangerous potential to mutate into the next pandemic flu virus.

In a feature-length special, we tell the story of what could happen if a flu pandemic hits. Experts predict the next pandemic will be more disruptive than any disease we’ve seen before. And they’re particularly worried that it will be most deadly for the young and otherwise healthy.

The last flu pandemic in 1918 killed an estimated 50 million people worldwide. Nowadays, with extensive global travel and movement, the virus will be able to spread even more easily. The estimates are that hundreds of millions could be infected and potentially die.

A remarkable find in the Northern Territory, Australia, has opened a fierce debate on the prehistory of humans. The date of the find, if correct, dramatically pushes back the date at which people began to create art and language, and triples the date of occupation of Australia. It is, however, strongly contended…

Enormous sculpted boulders, described by Australian scientists Richard Fullagar and Paul Tacon as similar in concept to Stonehenge, and thousands of detailed circular engravings have been dated by them at around 75,000 years old, with stone tools dating back to 176,000 years.

Fullagar and Tacon say that the engravings and sculptures are possibly the oldest rock art in the world - more than twice the age of the famous French rock art paintings at Chauvet and Cosquer. But the most extraordinary find, published in British Antiquity in December 1996, revealed that Australia may have been occupied for up to 176,000 years - more than 110,000 years longer than previously thought.

While excavating in sediments below the rock art, the scientists recovered ochre dating back between 116,000 and 176,000 years. If Aboriginals really have been in Australia for over 100,000 years it enormously changes the traditional view of pre-history in several ways.

It is little short of a revolution for those scholars who cling to the traditional assumptions that ‘art’ began with modern humans and the Upper Palaeolithic period (from about 40,000 years ago).

As for the colonisation of Australia, the previously accepted point of arrival was 60,000 years ago. The Jinmium art substantiates considerably the hypothesis that charcoal layers in sediment, from a marine core off the Queensland coast, were caused from agricultural burning under human occupation around 150,000 years ago. Genetic data from Dr Ros Harding in Oxford also support the contentious find, suggesting that modern humans first arose in Asia rather than Africa, and could well have moved down to Australia.

According to the ‘Out of Africa’ theory, modern humans arose in Africa and migrated from there about 100,000 years ago. If that is so then the Jinmium people could not be modern humans. But those who support the hypothesis of ‘multi-regional continuity’ argue that early humans left Africa about 2 million years ago, and have been evolving and spreading elsewhere since then, intermixing enough to explain the parallel evolution. Archaeological finds of Homo erectus in Indonesia support the idea that they were actually quite advanced - using stone tools and probably navigating boats. According to archaeologist Mike Morwood, who specialises in Indonesian fossils, there is no reason why they could not have travelled to Australia.

It seems that human evolution has many more unanswered questions than we previously thought…

For the last 50 years the world has lived in fear of radiation. Hiroshima, Nagasaki and accidents at nuclear power stations struck terror in people everywhere – but Horizon: Nuclear Nightmares has uncovered evidence to suggest these fears could be unfounded.

Horizon: Nuclear Nightmares (first aired on BBC TWO, Thursday 13 July 2006) speaks to a number of scientists who are asking whether we need to think again about the dangers of radiation as there is evidence to suggest that there is a threshold below which radiation may be harmless – or even beneficial.

The programme examines in detail the aftermath of the ultimate nuclear nightmare – the explosion and fire 20 years ago at Chernobyl Reactor number four. The results of the investigation are astonishing. In the aftermath of Chernobyl experts predicted tens of thousands of deaths from cancer.

Yet, when the authoritative UN Chernobyl Forum report - compiled by scientists from organisations such as the WHO - was published late last year it put the total death toll from the accident at just 59.

In 1978 Horizon broadcast a famous programme, Now The Chips Are Down, about the invention of the silicon chip. It predicted the death of the Swiss watch industry, permanent mass unemployment and showcased a new invention called a “word processor” that would see the end of the typing pool. It was a surprisingly negative view and was followed by a debate with a Government minister about what could be done to prevent a terrible future of mass unemployment. Cabinet members watched the programme to find out what the microprocessor was all about. VHS rip from UK Documentary. Has an onscreen dog, adverts edited out. Debate not included.

It all began in 1971 as a game of speculation - a bit of light relief from the rigours of tectonic and oceanographic investigation in the Mediterranean basin

American oceanographer Bill Ryan was on the scientific team which showed that the Mediterranean had been a vast desert basin until, 5 million years ago, the world’s oceans rose and burst through the Straits of Gibraltar to create the Mediterranean Sea.

Walter Pitman was helping to found the new science of plate tectonics. Ryan and Pitman’s British associate John Dewey (now Professor of Earth Sciences at Oxford) put up an ingenious idea - could a similar cataclysmic flooding of a massive basin account for the Biblical Flood - a catastrophe of such enormity that it would remain in human memory down the ages? If so, where might it have taken place?

The idea never went away and 20 years later, in 1991, Ryan and Pitman began their search. This year they will announce their findings to the scientific world. Richard Curson Smith’s film takes Pitman and Ryan back to the Black Sea, where they now believe that the Flood occurred in 5,600 BC.

Filmed on location in Turkey, Bulgaria, Russia and the United States, HORIZON tells the story of the discovery through the eyes and experiences of the two scientists. Like Laurel and Hardy, they swing from disappointment to despair, to euphoria, as they pursue their dramatic idea, working with geological evidence from the Turkish navy, drilling into the bed of the Black Sea alongside a team of Russian scientists (who were tracking fall-out from Chernobyl), building in all the data available from experts in climate and tree-ring dating, and finally testing their findings on their colleagues in the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University, and at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.

Bill Ryan and Walter Pitman may have a romantic streak in their natures, but there’s nothing eccentric about their ideas. They are, says Professor Dewey, “Two of the finest American earth scientists working in the field”. They have gathered a hoard of evidence to demonstrate that the Black Sea had fallen 120 metres below the level of the worlds oceans as a result of a sudden freezing of Northern Europe and Asia which dramatically reduced the flow of the great rivers which fed it.

The Black Sea became a vast fresh-water lake. The Earth warmed, the oceans rose again and smashed through the Bosphorus Straits with the force of a hundred Niagara Falls, filling the Black Sea basin to its present level with the salt water of the oceans.

The implications are enormous. Who lived by the Black Sea before the deluge? What may it tell us about the spread of Neolithic farming, culture and technology into Europe and beyond? Did this extraordinary event become the stuff of ancient storytelling, so that Noah and his Ark became a symbol for real people who were driven from their lands by a real flood?

A profile of the Scientist Richard Feynman. Originally broadcast in 2 parts, this file contains both episodes.

An intimate, moving, and funny account of the remarkable life and times of Richard Feynman—the most extraordinary scientist of his age.

With a unique combination of dazzling intellect and touching simplicity, Feynman had a passion for physics that was merely the Nobel Prize-winning part of an immense love of life and everything it could offer. He was hugely irreverent and always completely honest—with himself, with his colleagues, and with nature.

Nice Guys Finish First (BBC Horizon television series) is a 1987 documentary by Richard Dawkins which discusses selfishness and cooperation, arguing that evolution often favors co-operative behaviour, and focusing especially on the tit for tat strategy of the prisoner’s dilemma game. The film is approximately 45 minutes long and was produced by Jeremy Taylor.

The twelfth chapter in Dawkins’ book The Selfish Gene is also named Nice Guys Finish First and explores similar material.
