《德拉姆》是田壮壮的第一部纪录片作品，也是我国第一部使用“高清”数字技术拍摄出来的影片，被电影界评价为“田壮壮一贯‘艺术影片’路线的一次延续”。据说，为了拍摄记录云南滇西北怒江流域原住居民的生活现状，田壮壮率拍摄队沿怒江而上，一路上风餐露宿，饮江水，沐天浴，屡历惊险，随马帮徒步至察瓦龙，再原途返回。这五十多天的古道之行，让田壮壮瘦了十几斤，该片被誉为“用生命换来的纪录片”。

不愧大师的田壮壮，拍摄创意的确别具匠心。他的《德拉姆》由两条线索组成，其一：马队的古道之行，其二：沿途的见与闻。在两条线索的交织里，影片真实地展现了怒江流域的美丽、壮观、贫穷，其为《德拉姆》之骨架；典型地展示了怒江大峡谷平凡居民们的生活故事，其为《德拉姆》之血和肉，由是，《德拉姆》成了诗一般的作品，成了永恒的历史教材。

自古以来，中国的云南省以马帮运输茶、盐、粮食的古道已有近千年的历史。马帮就像今日的汽车，在山路中将背上的货物运往各地。"茶马古道"因此而得名。“茶马古道”是：文明文化传播古道、中外交流通道、-民族迁徙走廊、宗教传播大道、-民族和平之路。

本纪录片的拍摄重点将位于云南、四川、西藏境内的横断山脉。它将青藏高原与云贵高原连接在一起，平均海拔为二千五百米以上，其中高黎贡山、碧罗雪山、梅里雪山三大山系形成三个峡谷，而且山巅终年积雪。因为南北山势，亚热带的季候风可以进入峡谷中。这里形成的独特自然气候，森林、水资源极大丰富，由亚洲的动、植物博物馆之称。在这片土地上，藏族、怒族、独龙族、纳西族、傈僳族已居住了上百年近千年。怒江、澜沧江、金沙江从峡谷中流过，源头是青藏高原的喜马拉雅山。这个神奇的地区被人称之为“香格里--拉”。而我们要拍摄的“茶马古道”在这个神奇的地方穿行。生活在这块神奇土地内的原住民族便是我们要拍摄的主人翁。

　　曾有3个古帝国先后定都跨越欧亚两洲的伊斯坦堡，原因在于博斯普鲁斯海峡是欧亚之间的重要贸易路线。如今每年仍有4万多艘大船通过这条海峡。不过这座海峡将伊斯坦堡一分为二，当地通勤族可以选择走桥梁，或是搭2分钟的渡轮。为了解决交通混乱的问题，土耳其政府决定建造连接欧亚两洲，穿越博斯普鲁斯海峡的铁路隧道。这条铁路隧道属于沉埋管式隧道，是由11节管段连接而成。管段是在陆地上建造，然后利用水托运到预定位置，再沉放到海底。不过，伊斯坦堡位在地球上最活跃的断层带上，而这座城市已有1百多年未遭地震直袭，但科学家认为地震早该发生。如果发生强烈地震，隧道管段会坍塌，工程师因而将隧道设计成会弯曲，但不会断裂。此外，工人在利用隧道钻掘机进行挖掘时，意外发现古代沉船遗址，致使工程作业停摆，须等考古学家完成挖掘工作，隧道工程作业才能复工。

在这一集的节目中，贝尔吉罗斯要挑战美国南部的沼泽区。美国最大的沼泽位在南部。这片面积广达数千平方哩的荒野，位在文明世界的最边缘，并经常遭龙卷风,雷暴和飓风等恶劣天候袭击。这片沼泽住著150万只短吻鳄，另外还有6种毒蛇，攻击性强的鳄龟和长达10尺的史前鱼类。 直升机在深水道放贝尔下去。由於担心遇上短吻鳄，贝尔快速离开深水道。由於沼泽中处处潜藏著危险，贝尔於是找了一根枝条帮助他行走。沼泽区内处处可见野生动物，这虽然表示沼泽内有很多食物，但要懂得分辨什么东西能吃，才不会害自己陷入危险。贝尔猎杀一只短吻鳄，将它的肉烤来吃，并利用鳄鱼皮当绳索，搭盖他过夜要用的棚子。通过沼泽区之後，他沿著卡崔娜飓风破坏的轨迹前进，然後终於抵达与直升机会合的地方。
