During World War Two, Britain was absolutely reliant on maritime trade for its survival. The protection of its merchant fleet, therefore became an issue of paramount importance. After June 1940 however, German U-Boats began to operate in the Atlantic and appalling losses were inflicted on Allied merchant shipping. Arctic convoys were twice suspended in 1942 as German aircraft and submarines wrought havoc on the waves. The trip to the Russian port of Murmansk soon became known as the death trip because so few ships returned. Featuring powerful filmed memories of veterans from both sides of the conflict, this is an account of one of World War Two s most pitiless theatres of operations, where men lived in constant fear of the unseen dangers of the deep. This DVD features 3-D graphics and animation to show the realities of a submarine attack and the mechanics of a ship s defences, with in-depth analysis from Dr Tim Bean of the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.

There are many weapons of war; fighter planes, heavy tanks and skilled infantrymen but it could be argued that none is more powerful than the power of suggestion. Propaganda and the war of words played an undoubtedly vital role in both the successes and failures of World War Two. Governments struggled to gain the upper hand in the war away from the battlefield, but one man proved to have a deft talent for spin. Joseph Goebbels honed the art of mass communication until, in the early days at least, it became one of Germany’s most effective weapons.

This DVD features rare examples of propaganda posters and campaigns, and insight from Chris Read and Robin Lenman both of Warwick University into the huge part propaganda had to play within World War Two.

From 1940 until war’s end, German industry produced a plethora of self- propelled weapons for the German Army. Whilst some of these were purposely designed, others were extemporary affairs developed rapidly using available weapons and chassis to serve the immediate need of the German Army in the field. Those covered in this programme fall mainly into the categories of tank destroyers and self-propelled artillery. This unique compilation of combat footage of these vehicles will allow the viewer to gain an insight into the variety and importance of such weapons to the German Army, up to its defeat.

One of the most common images of German Armour in the combat footage taken by Goebbel’s propaganda cameramen in the second half of the war in Europe, was the Assault Gun or ‘Sturmgeschutz’ (abbr. Stug). From 1942 onwards it was increasingly employed as a tank destroyer, but its origin lay not in that role but in a 1936 order for an armoured infantry support vehicle. The frequency with which assault guns are filmed in action from 1944 onwards, illustrates the manner to which this vehicle was employed as a substitute for the Panzers. By the war’s end assault gun units claimed the destruction of no less than 20,000 allied tanks.

This is a comprehensive documentary about the German Panzer V Panther Tank (Panzerkampfwagen V Panther).

Serving Germany from mid-1943 to the end of World War II in 1945, the Panzer V “Panther” tanks were intended as a counter to the T-34, and to replace the Panzer IV and III, although they served along side them and other heavy tanks until the end of the war. The Panther’s excellent combination of firepower, mobility, and protection served as a benchmark for other nations’ late war and immediate post-war tank designs and it is frequently regarded (along with the Soviet T-34 Tank) as the best tank design of World War II

The documentary runs about an hour, with good quality footages and combat scenes. The audio narration is information-intensive, providing details about its development, production, units and main battles.
