A documentary special that explores the social, historical and health impact of being slaves to sweets. Written and Directed by Brian McKenna.

Big Sugar explores the dark history and modern power of the world’s reigning sugar cartels. Using dramatic reenactments, it reveals how sugar was at the heart of slavery in the West Indies in the 18th century, while showing how present-day consumers are slaves to a sugar-based diet. A lost chapter of Canadian history is discovered, illustrating how 18th century sugar lobbyists in England used blackmail and bribes to determine the fate of Canada.

India today has a middle class that is bigger than the total population of the United States, yet half her children go to bed hungry. While the Indian economic miracle powers on, corruption, pollution, water shortages, inequity, ethnic and religious strife, and cold war with Pakistan cloud the future. As India is poised to become the third biggest economy in the world and play a stronger role in international politics, this series will consider the challenges facing the next superpower.

Myth and Might is a front row seat at the birth of a new superpower. Explore India’s rich tapestry of myth – from the flames of the Gange’s ancient cremation pyres to the unforgettable Navrati festival with its tens of thousands of dancers. Experience the force of India’s might – in the jungles where a war for the country’s future is underway, and the concrete streets of the capital where millions demand justice. Restore yourself in the re- emergence of the healing art of ayurveda. Filled with charismatic characters, Myth and Might introduces you to a panoramic India as you have never seen it before.

Capture the excitement of life in cities pulsating with new wealth and a rising middle class. The Indian economy is a giant awakened and “the centre is moving east”. Onboard his private jet, meet a billionaire ringmaster of the good times economy; around the club pool, a power couple, returned from the U.S. In Calcutta, a determined young woman seeks a place in a surging economy that has not yet created enough jobs for this teeming nation. The countryside is rife with loss and longing. High tech and high hopes in this up close look at an economy on the move.

From Mumbai’s strobe-lit studios, to back-alley village sets, Manufacturing Dreams shines a spotlight on a society where rising prosperity has traditional values in turmoil. Seen through the colourful prism of Bollywood, our characters include a wealthy bride at her Bollywood-style wedding, a super- successful DJ on the prowl in Mumbai, a young “item girl” who hopes her sexy dances will catapult her to stardom. A popular actress wants her TV soap to take away the stigma of a dark complexion. Manufacturing Dreams pulls back the curtain on the new India, revealing a grand spectacle of bright profiles… and stark divisions

From the shimmering beauty of the Golden Temple in Amritsar to the desert barrenlands of Rajasthan, Mother India shows us how food unites and food still divides in today’s India.

A dignified Kabab King suffers in silence as a nephew steals his 100 year old recipe to peddle it in one of India’s fast food malls.

A celebrity chef introduces olive oil to adoring fans and a dailit cook returns to herding goats when higher-caste children refuse to eat her food.

Modernity and tradition collide and merge in a spicy episode set in “the land of a thousand dishes” at a time of unparalleled change.

One Ocean is an ambitious, provocative and stunning four-part documentary series that portrays the ocean more completely than ever before, revealing its awesome beauty and extraordinary power. The series explores how it is that the ocean holds the very key to all life within its silent and shadowy depths. In each breathtaking episode we bring to life a vast, interconnected ecosystem: from the diversity and significance of microscopic plankton, to the sleek power of the Ocean’s top predators.

One Ocean joins expeditions of discovery that take us to tropical coasts, to the deep, churning sea, and to meet strange and mysterious marine life that most of us will never get to see. We reveal a secret world beneath the water’s surface: energized with purpose, order, and the drama of survival. Complex environments inhabited by an astounding array of life forms, alternately splendid and graceful, are revealed like never before. Disarming, bizarre and plainly profound – One Ocean bears witness a world that is at once intricately beautiful and achingly vulnerable.

In The Birth of an Ocean we travel back to ancient time, telling the story of the ocean’s turbulent beginnings, and its successive incarnations. It’s a journey that introduces the enormity of the ocean over space and time – at four billion years old the ocean is nearly as old as the planet itself. In a remote part of Western Australia, we venture to the stunning, crystal blue waters that harbour the descendants of the first life on earth. These formations once covered the ancient seabed, and today they give scientists a remarkable window back in time. Traveling forward, we discover that almost 99.9% of species that ever lived on this planet are now extinct. On the lush and diverse Osprey Reef, we swim alongside scientists to learn why one remarkable creature – the nautilus – has survived, for millions of years, what countless other species could not. In The Birth of an Ocean we trace our own profound connections to the ocean with Tiktaalik , the “fish-a-pod” that scientists believe is the missing link between the ocean and all limbed creatures, including us.

In our second episode, Footprints in the Sand, we take measure of humanity’s impact on the sea since we first settled along its coasts over 150,000 years ago. We travel to the Mediterranean Sea with local Spanish fishermen in search of the magnificent bluefin tuna, the most prized fish in the ocean. It’s also one of the most overfished. As fishermen try to maintain their centuries-old method of fishing, conservation scientists are desperate to find hard evidence to support their side in the heated debate over quotas. Human activity through history – first overfishing, then over-development of the world’s coastlines, and the continuing pollution that we pour into the sea – have had unexpected consequences. But as Footprints in the Sand reveals, marine protected areas can have a huge impact on an ecosystem’s ability to recover. Zanzibar is a place where the people have always depended on fish for their survival. There, locals are finding ways to live in balance with the ocean by using more sustainable approaches to their harvests, and also by creating a sense of communal ownership and stewardship. In New Zealand, we discover that ocean areas which are now protected have experienced an extraordinary turn-around – where once sea urchins had taken over and destroyed the reefs and kelp forests, top predators have returned and the stunning reef has been restored to its full glory.

Episode Three of our series reveals the Mysteries of the Deep and takes us to the most beguiling parts of the sea, the very depths that we know so little about. As we improve our technological prowess, we are venturing deeper and deeper into the planet’s last frontier. What scientists are discovering is beyond our wildest imaginings. We join a team of scientists, ranging from biologists to vulcanologists, on an international expedition as they return to the Mariana Arc, on the Pacific Rim of Fire. As their submersible ROV plumbs the depths of the ocean, the thrill and excitement of peering into these extreme environments is palpable. Each day they make new discoveries about the outlandish deep-sea dwellers they find here. But at the same time that we begin to unravel their mysteries we’re also mining the sea of many species. Finally Mysteries of the Deep asks the question: can cutting-edge technologies allow us to truly experience, for the first time, the three-dimensional world of the deep ocean?

In our final episode, The Changing Sea , we discover that the ocean is sending us clear signals. Off the rugged and beautiful coast of British Columbia we meet scientists and fishermen who are shocked at the recent arrival of a voracious new creature – the Humboldt squid. This monster-sized squid native to the equatorial waters of Mexico has moved north and ushered in a cascade of changes to the ecosystem. Their arrival is part of a disturbing pattern that is emerging with species movement being tracked around the world. In The Changing Sea we illustrate how the ocean’s chemistry and systems are being compromised by increased acidity, less oxygen and warming temperatures. The changes to the timeless rhythms of birth and renewal are being felt everywhere – even on coral reefs. In the idyllic waters of the Bay of Naples, we get a glimpse of our future ocean, thanks to the mythic Mount Vesuvius. As scientists swim through lush green seagrass beds, they collect creatures whose shells are dissolving, and we discover that this amazing place has a terrible secret. It has been naturally acidified for millennia – could this be our ocean’s future?

Our guides to the hidden depths of the sea are some of the planet’s most innovative and charismatic marine scientists, and the people who live and die by the sea. Fast-paced and engaging, the series is visually stunning, and gives viewers a deeper understanding of the Ocean’s unbelievable complexity. Our telling of the journey mixes powerful animation, special effects and striking pictures shot in HD. The visual beauty and style of this series gives audiences an emotional connection to the past, present, and future of the ocean. Compelling experiences shared with dedicated and passionate scientists connect audiences intellectually to the beautiful symmetry that exists within its depths.

The Jungle Prescription is the tale of two doctors treating their addicted patients with a mysterious Amazonian medicine rumored to reveal one’s deepest self. Dr. Gabor Mat has a revolutionary idea: to treat addicts with compassion. His work as the resident doctor in Vancouver’s Portland Hotel - a last-chance destination for lifelong drug abusers - has been courageous, but incredibly frustrating. Mat hears of an ancient medicine beyond his imaginings: one that could provide his patients with a solution. Its name is ayahuasca: the vine of the souls. Deep in the Amazon jungle, French doctor Jacques Mabit is using this medicine to treat hardcore addicts. Mabit runs a detox centre in the Amazon (Takiwasi or “The House That Sings”), using the plants and methods of traditional medicine. Ayahuasca is a visionary formula that unlocks emotional memory; causing life-changing catharsis in those who drink it. The reported success rates for curing addicts at Dr. Mabit’s detox centre are quadruple the average.

Dr Mate returns to Canada with a plan to work with a group of healers to treat patients struggling with various types of addiction. At these sessions they will serve ayahuasca: the acrid tea that occupies a grey area of Canadian law. But without a detox centre or support structure for his patients, will it work?

Since the publication of his award-winning book, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts, Dr. Gabor Mate has been one of Canada’s leading thinkers on addiction and its deeper causes. The experience of making the film has had a profound impact on him: “As a physician all too aware of the limitations and narrowness of Western medicine, I have learned much from working with this plant. The Jungle Prescription took me far physically, but even further in the spiritual realm where our deepest humanity resides. The plant, and the experience with the plant, is no panacea. There are no panaceas. But as an opening to human possibility, even in the face of lifelong trauma and desperation, it offers much. Seeing people open to themselves, even temporarily, has been a teaching and an inspiration.”

The Downside of High, directed and written by Bruce Mohun, tells the stories of three young people from British Columbia who believe - along with their doctors - that their mental illness was triggered by marijuana use. All three spent months in hospital psychiatric wards, and still wage a battle with their illness. Today’s super-potent pot may be a big part of the problem. Modern growing techniques have dramatically increased the amount of THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana - ramping up the threat to the developing teenage brain. But there’s an intriguing twist to the story: in the process of cultivating more potent strains of pot, growers have also been breeding out a little-known ingredient called cannabidiol that seems to buffer the effects of THC. So today’s high-octane pot actually contains a double-whammy - more psychosis-producing THC, and less of the protective CBD or cannabidiol. For many people, smoking marijuana is not a big deal - it is, after all, the most widely-used illegal drug in the world. The Downside of High provides a scientific perspective on some of the little-known and little discussed risks of marijuana, particularly for teenagers.

The earth has two North poles, the geographic and the magnetic. The magnetic pole is the one that attracts the needles of our compasses. It’s always moving, but could it be about to flip? What will be the impact? Paleomagnetism has taught us that the magnetic pole flips regularly, going from north to south and vice versa, once every 250,000 years on average. However, the last inversion occurred 780,000 years ago! Are we on the eve of such a major event? When North Goes South follows Canadian geophysicist Larry Newitt and French geologist Jean-Jacques Orgeval as they meet astronauts, marine biologists, paleo and archeomagneticians, in an attempt to understand, measure and explain the consequences of a pole inversion.

What do Al Gore, the Tower of Babel, science fiction, gothic cathedrals, artichokes and roller coasters have in common? All come together in Malls R US, a feature documentary with a multiplex of critical reflections and revelations on one of North America’s most popular suburban institutions - the enclosed shopping center.

Mixing nostalgia, architectural ambition, pop culture and politics, Malls R US travels from North America, the mall’s origins, to some of its newer hosts - Poland, Japan, India and Dubai. Along the way, the film meets Dead Mall activists mourning the loss of their crumbling hangouts, Sci-Fi guru Ray Bradbury extolling the virtues of getting lost in a mall, a popular mass uprising against malls by shopkeepers in India, and a church gathering contemplating the sacredness of shopping centers.

A new mall in Japan. Some of the world’s most renowned contemporary retail architects and developers explain how malls are the medium through which the 21st century will rebirth decaying cities, inspire monument building, unite mankind, and even help the planet grow green. We’ll see Mother Earth - pushed over to make way for the mall - reconfigured in air-conditioned splendor, through babbling fountains, evergreen trees, and glass ceilings. Religious, environmental and labour critics gaze past security cameras onto the shrinking public space, to ask whether community can ever be born out of food courts and superstores.

Walking among shoppers and workers of many tongues and cultures, Malls R US wonders, “is there only one true language at the mall - the one where money talks?” Ironic, sobering and visually stunning, this surprising documentary offers a trip to the mall like no other.
