He visits town halls, concert halls, libraries, schools and galleries in Liverpool, Leeds, Bradford, Manchester and Todmorden in an unlikely story of rivalry, ambition and power in the service of social responsibility.

　Neo-Classical

Neo-classicism harked back to Rome, democratic Athens and the Greek city-state. The regular proportion, geometry and symmetry of classical temple-style architecture suggested order in chaotically-expanding urban environments and served to associate towns regarded as squalid and unruly with the cultured ancient civilisations of antiquity. These were buildings constructed with the aim of elevating the towns in which they stood.

　The Gothic Revival

Two men are primarily responsible for this medieval style's adoption by the Victorians. Augustus Pugin associated gothic with godliness and harmony and believed that architecture could influence morality. John Ruskin's influential book The Stones of Venice looked at the gothic architecture of the Italian renaissance mercantile republics and associated it with freedom. When Ruskin untethered gothic architecture from ecclesiastical building it went on to flourish in the hands of a generation of young, idealistic architects seeking to assert the cultural credentials of the north and exert an improving influence over the citizens of the burgeoning industrial towns.

Living amongst the colony of 200,000 King penguins near the Antarctic ice-cap and during 40 days of live-action filming, Nigel explores the real-life drama and experiences the day-to-day soap opera of their lives. He also witnesses extraordinary sights from the other main inhabitants of this area - the 6,000 Southern Elephant seals. This week-long series was filmed over forty days during October and November, the Antarctic spring, amongst the spectacular wildlife and jaw-dropping scenery of the island of South Georgia. I became friendly with the penguin stars and a supporting cast of other animal characters, as they spent the short spring courting, breeding, laying eggs, bickering and eventually feeding their newborn babies!

In the summer, space becomes dear on the beaches of the Sub-Antartic islands. There, penguins and sea elephants live jumbled up together, caught in the throes of breeding and bringing up the little ones. Such overpopulation leads to tensions between species and individuals. The crowds of penguins and elephant seals attract many scavengers as well as dangerous predators like giant petrels, the vultures of those icy climes, and killer whales full of hunting tactics. More agile, the fur seals and the wandering albatrosses, those indefatiguable gliders, seem to escape the chaotic throng. Like the other animals, however, they are dependent on the ocean,their only source of food in these isolated lands. When winter comes, this cohabitation ends. Their breeding duties finished, the different animals return to the waters they are used to wander in.
