Building a Runway at Night
While the world sleeps, the engineering crew at the Frankfurt Airport is gearing up for an adrenaline-filled action-packed night. Meticulously orchestrated, this project has no margin for error. With the last plane lifting off at 10 p.m. - and with an incoming landing scheduled for 6 a.m. - a massive construction crew will race against the clock to peel back the entire runway and completely resurface it… in just eight hours!
Putting the breaks on A Super Fast Jet
For a fighter jet, super speed is usually among its top assets, but how fast is too fast? And what’s the process to slow a speeding super jet that can reach Mach 2? German engineers are testing a new model of the Eurofighter that uses a whole new breaking system. Go behind the scenes with one of Europe’s best fighter pilots, Chris Warning, as engineers work to harness super speed.
The Mine Wolf
Remnants of war are found all over the world, especially deadly landmines that often injure people long after the battles have ended. One young German inventor has a solution…and it’s a very big one. Christoph Frehsee has made a machine that can withstand the devastating blasts of undetonated landmines. Converted forestry machines have been crossed with incredible air displacing baskets, and like tanks, these mega-machines can drive over the worst mine field digging up hidden explosives - even with a human driver sitting at the controls all the while cushioned from the powerful blasts.
Nurburgring Race Track

At the legendary Nurburgring race track, once the professionals leave, anyone with a car can buy a ticket and let their inner speed demon put the pedal to the metal and tackle the turns. It’s an incredible adrenaline rush for most. The Nurburgring is not for the faint of heart - its wicked design has cost many lives, but it’s this track that is the inspiration for Herman Tilke’s professional passion. Tilke has been inspired by Nurburgring for his design of the world’s best race tracks, from Shanghai to Mexico.
Queen Mary 2 Comes Into Port
Every year, millions of Germans party on the shores of Hamburg in a celebration that rivals Oktoberfest. The party is held to celebrate the birthday of the port of Hamburg. This year, there was a special surprise guest in port: the Queen Mary 2, one of the biggest and most luxurious cruise ships in the world. She arrived in the only port in the world that could handle some very delicate repairs to her engines. Hamburg port is one of the only places in the world that can fit the massive ship - a vessel that’s too wide to fit through the Panama Canal. Positioning the Queen Mary 2 into the dry dock is a dramatic, precision manoeuver, with just inches between her hull and the dry dock below.
World’s Most Automated Port
Hamburg is one of the busiest sea hubs in the world, with ships lining up to off-load their cargo. But at the bustling Hamburg port, it appears that something is missing… the port workers. Here it takes only one man to unload a ship with 9,000 containers the size of trucks. His “co-workers” are all robots in this futuristic automated port where intelligent machines rule.

Future Volkswagen owners can get to know their new car from the moment it begins assembly by watching the process at Dresden’s transparent Volkswagen factory. All glass, this building is a technological and engineering marvel.
