剧情简介
The People’s Century is a television documentary series examining the 20th century. It was a joint production of the BBC in the United Kingdom and PBS member station WGBH Boston in the United States. First shown on BBC in 1995, the 26 parts of one hour each deal with the socio-economic, political, and cultural movements that shaped the 20th century. The documentary won the International Emmy Award, the George Foster Peabody Award and several others.

As we enter the new millennium, People’s Century pauses to look back, inviting the people who participated in the great events of our century to reflect on what we’ve accomplished, where we’ve failed, how things have – and haven’t – changed, where we’ve been, how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go. From the front lines of war to the battle against racism, the fight for freedom to the struggle for equality: Those who where there tell the stories of our times as People’s Century celebrates the human spirit – and history on a human scale.

The twentieth century has been one of unrivaled extremes – from the height of human accomplishment to the greatest depths of inhumanity. It is also a history defined equally by unencumbered intellectual achievement and astonishing ignorance, war and peace, democracy and dictatorship, by individual resolution and mass revolution. People’s Century offers a powerful and personal new perspective on this past, making “history and television for citizens of the twentieth century,” says Dor-Ner, “and for the children of the twenty-first.”

A departure from other documentaries that observe history as the actions of great men, People’s Century tells the story of the century through interviews with people from all walks. It documents significant times with archive footage of events, combined with personal photographs. One memorable aspect is its title clip and music, a depiction of moments from the century - It consists of a tracking shot of a miniature landscape which resembles the events pictured, for example ruins of wars, streets from the Jazz Age, palm trees from Vietnam and a model of the Berlin Wall partly wrecked. The piece was made in Prague, in the Czech Republic. The theme music was by composer Zbigniew Preisner. Panoramic Images from World War I, the Russian Revolution, the Great Depression, the Holocaust, World War II, the Space Age, the May 1968 student revolution, the Iranian Revolution, the Cold War, and the fall of the Berlin Wall are also featured in the title clip.

The British version was narrated by Sean Barrett and Veronika Hyks, the American version by actors John Forsythe and Alfre Woodard.

People’s Century was coproduced by the BBC and WGBH with executive producers Peter Pagnamenta and Zvi Dor-Ner, respectively; along with producer David Espar.

剧情简介
Latin Music USA is a film about American music. Fusions of Latin sounds with Jazz, Rock, Country, Rhythm and Blues - music with deeper roots and broader reach than most people realize. It’s a fresh take on our musical history, reaching across five decades and across musical genres to portray the rich mix of sounds created by Latinos and embraced by all.

The series features the stories of an extraordinary range of artists, including Salsa greats Willie Colón and Marc Anthony; the Latin-inflected sounds found in much of sixties Rock and Roll, from the Drifters to Motown to the Rolling Stones; Jazz fused with Cuban rhythms from Mario Bauzá and Chano Pozo, the genius of Texas accordion player Flaco Jiménez; Carlos Santana; Linda Ronstadt; the legendary Chicano Rock band Los Lobos; megastars Gloria and Emilio Estefan; Ricky Martin and Juanes; Miami rapper Pitbull; Reggaetón performers Daddy Yankee and Tego Calderón; and Lin-Manuel Miranda from the Tony Award-winning musical In the Heights. The life experiences of these and many other unforgettable artists will reveal how Latinos have reinvented their music in the United States, while never losing sight of their own rich traditions.

In a word, they are tough. These jets are engineered quite differently from their American counterparts. They function well in adverse conditions, able to take off from open dirt fields, and their continuous operation doesn’t depend on regular maintenance. The U.S. jet is finely tuned, requiring more frequent upkeep, but definitely having a high-tech edge, particularly in the areas of radar and missile guidance.

剧情简介
It might be the greatest haul of treasure ever accumulated in one place – but does it exist? This documentary examines the legend of Yamashita’s Gold. Japanese imperial expansion across South East Asia during the 1930s and early 1940s saw an orgy of systematic looting across a dozen countries. Banks, government treasuries, temples and monasteries were all targeted and stripped bare. The spoils were intended to be shipped back to Japan, but this was effectively rendered impossible after 1942 as American naval superiority came to dominate the Pacific. According to legend, a huge proportion of the loot was hidden in the Philippines, using Filipino slave labour and Allied prisoners-of-war to dig tunnels to hide the spoils. Consisting of gemstones, platinum, priceless artefacts and at least 6,000 tonnes of gold, the value of the treasure is estimated at over 100 billion dollars. The architect of the scheme was the famous Japanese General Tomyuki Yamashita. Some claim that the treasure – or at least part of it – has been found, passing into the coffers of former Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos. How much of the story is true may never be known, for the one man who knew the secret took it to the grave with him. Tomyuki Yamashita was tried as a war criminal and executed in 1946.

剧情简介
FRONTLINE presents the story of the man behind the myth, probing Mandela’s character, leadership and life’s method through intimate recollections with friends, political allies, adversaries, and his fellow prisoners and jailers on Robben Island, where Mandela spent 18 of his 27 prison years, transforming himself in prison from an impetuous, risk-taking radical into a mature leader and statesman. Together with the many interviews, unique photos, and rare archival film, the program also interweaves analyses from Mandela’s biographers, Richard Stengel and Anthony Sampson, illuminating not only what separates Mandela from ordinary men–his singular pursuit of his life’s mission, his unwavering moral certitude, his own sense of his destiny–but also, what makes him like the rest of us: his vanity, his anger, his stubbornness. This two-hour biography is filled with insights from Mandela’s noble upbringing in the rural Transkei where his values and attitudes were shaped by tradition and royal prerogative–to old colleagues’ anecdotes about his self-discipline, guarded privacy and quite early sense of his own historic destiny. The program also examines Mandela’s electric relationship with Winnie Madikizela Mandela and chronicles Mandela’s negotiations with the increasingly embattled white rulers of South Africa.

剧情简介
A team of intrepid filmmakers provides an intimate look at the snowy owl, a bird made popular by Harry Potter’s faithful companion Hedwig. Though “snowies” naturally stand out for their beauty, intelligence and charm, in their eerie, bleak Arctic home it is their determination and survival skills that are truly magical. Throughout the long months of the Arctic winter the sun remains below the horizon while the darkness intensifies the cold. Life is difficult, if not impossible, for all but the toughest and most experienced of animals. Snowy owls are built for the challenge, their every sense and skill honed to take on their frozen world. And when the brief Arctic summer approaches, bringing light back to the tundra, they embark upon an even more daunting challenge than keeping themselves alive. They breed and attempt to raise young in one of the harshest environments on the planet. Once summer arrives, they will have just 82 days of sunlight to successfully raise a family of helpless owlets until they are ready and able to fly.

劇情簡介
Red Metal: The Copper Country Strike of 1913 explores an epic labor strike that devastated Michigan’s Copper Country-and haunts the American labor movement to this day. Produced and directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Jonathan Silvers, the program traces the Copper Country strike from its hopeful start to that tragic conclusion. Between those endpoints, the film explores the intensifying battle between organized labor and corporate power, as well as the strike’s cultural legacy, which influenced national discourse, music, and legislation during the Progressive Era and the New Deal. Among the notable elements of the strike was the death of seventy-three (60 of which were children) at a union Christmas Eve party, a tragedy immortalized by Woody Guthrie in his ballad “1913 Massacre” and performed by Steve Earle in the film. The event, known as the Italian Hall Disaster, remains the deadliest unsolved manslaughter in US history. As the centennial of the Italian Hall Disaster approaches, a new generation of Americans has begun paying tribute to the victims, while also deliberating the strike’s causes, outcomes, and legacy.
