Ninety years ago, one of the bloodiest days in the history of Britain was captured on film. But this shocking footage has never been shown as it was actually filmed. It was combined with staged sequences to create ‘The Battle of the Somme’, a propaganda film designed to rally a grieving nation. In the months and years following the brutal battle, the film was seen by around twenty million people. A cameraman called Geoffrey Malins had been allowed to the front lines on The Somme by the British generals. Along with fellow official cinematographer John McDowell, Malins created a graphic portrayal of trench warfare that showed dying British and German soldiers.

Although the British army had been anticipating a great victory - and were happy to see it commemorated on film – the battle did not go as planned. Malins had been filming the build up to the battle; he thought that he would go on the enemy being decimated. But it all went wrong. By the end of that first day almost 20,000 Allied soldiers were dead - the heaviest battlefield casualties ever inflicted on the British army in a single day. Since then, the film's iconic images have defined the Great War. But, the real story hidden in its footage has remained a mystery.

On that same day, 1st July 1916, men from the First Newfoundland Regiment fighting for Britain went over the top and into history. They were virtually wiped out. Now, as their descendants march back in time to find out what they went through, the silent film shot on The Somme surrenders its secrets. A team of investigators using forensic science work to determine the truth. They identify what is probably the first footage of men falling in battle ever captured on film, putting names to the faces of soldiers frozen in time that lead to their descendants, and releasing words spoken by soldiers on that fateful day, words that have never been heard…until now.

During World War I, trenches and barbed wire ran across the entire continent of Europe from the Mediterranean to the North Sea.The Battle of the Somme was one of the largest battles of the First World War, with more than one million casualties. At 7.30am on July 1st, 1916, after a devastating artillery bombardment lasting more than a week, 100,000 British soldiers waited in their trenches ready to advance on the German lines. They’d been told to expect minimal resistance, but as they picked their way slowly across no-man’s-land, guns opened fire. Shells burst overhead, and waves of men were machine-gunned down. The British and French forces attempted to break through the German lines along a 25-mile (40 km) front north and south of the River Somme in northern France.

One purpose of the battle was to draw German forces away from the battle of Verdun; however, by its end the losses on the Somme had exceeded those at Verdun. It was a military catastrophe of unprecedented proportions. In just one day the British suffered 57,470 casualties, including 19,240 dead - the bloodiest day in the history of the British Army.

On December 13th 1939, the first great naval battle of World War Two exploded into action off the coast of South America. Against overwhelming firepower, three British ships took on the pride of the German fleet, the pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee.

It would become known as the battle of the River Plate and pit two great naval officers against each other in a deadly duel. The Graf Spee was commanded by Captain Hans Langsdorff, a decorated hero from the First World War. Facing him was Commodore Henry Harwood, a brilliant naval tactician.

A deadly game of cat and mouse at sea, culminated in a bloody naval fight. As the world watched, the battle moved ashore in a gripping story of deception, and one of the biggest bluffs of the Second World War.

By the end of this story, one of the two captains would be declared a hero, the other branded a coward and lose his ship, his reputation and eventually his life.

The Battle of the River Plate tells the full story of this epic battle through the families and crews of the two commanders. Exclusive access to the personal archives of the two captains and interviews with their children bring a new understanding of the men behind the uniforms. Interviewed for the first time on television, Captain Langsdorff daughter gives a unique insight into Langsdorff the man and reads from his poignant final letter home. Even her children have never seen this letter which she has kept hidden away for 66 years.

Commodore Harwood's two sons bring a personal understanding of their father's motivation and character. There are hitherto unseen home movies and footage shot by the Commodore himself whilst on patrol in the South Atlantic, and his letters home written during the battle.

Survivors from both sides give powerful personal accounts describing the terror of the battle and its bloody aftermath Dr Eric Grove - eminent naval historian and author of a recent definitive history of the battle, re-examines how the cat and mouse battle at sea turned into an intriguing cloak and dagger battle of wits ashore, culminating in the first great media event of the war.
