Julia Bradbury heads for Iceland to embark on the toughest walk of her life. Her challenge is to walk the 60 kilometres of Iceland’s most famous hiking route, a trail that just happens to end at the unpronounceable volcano that brought air traffic across Europe to a standstill in 2010 . With the help of Icelandic mountain guide Hanna, Julia faces daunting mountain climbs, red hot lava fields, freezing river crossings, deadly clouds of sulphuric gas, swirling ash deserts and sinister Nordic ghost stories as she attempts to reach the huge volcanic crater at the centre of the Eyjafjallajökull glacier.

Evan Davis looks at the British economy and asks what our country is good at and how it can pay its way in the world. For Evan Davis, the economy’s move into more lucrative sectors was unquestionably the right direction for Britain to have taken. Economic transition has not been easy. Britain lost thousands of manufacturing jobs every month for many years as low value manufacturing journeyed off-shore. The manufacturing that stayed behind though has been on a journey too – towards smaller, higher value sectors. Discover more about how Britain pays its way in the world.

Who says we don’t make anything any more? In the first of a three-part series on how Britain pays its way in the world, Evan Davis busts the myths that we were wrong to let so much of our manufacturing go abroad, and that we have become a nation of shopkeepers, bankers and estate agents. As he flies in the world’s most revolutionary jet and drives one of the world’s fastest supercars, he discovers Britain still makes a lot it can be proud of. But post crash, he asks is it enough to meet the country’s bills.

How can Britain stay ahead of its competitors in the global economy? In the second part of his investigation into what we do and make in Britain, Evan Davis argues it’s right for Britain to concentrate on excelling in the knowledge economy. Industries such as pharmaceuticals and technology, which rely on innovation creativity and invention, can contribute greatly to the nation’s bank balance. Evan travels to Silicon Fen outside Cambridge to see the high-tech company worth billions after designing chips for mobile phones, and tells the story of how one invention transformed the fortunes of glass makers Pilkington. He also visits China to investigate how British branding and marketing expertise is faring in this new and booming market.

Evan Davis looks at the explosive growth of Britain’s services economy in the third and final part of the series. Modern Britain has undergone a remarkable change in recent years: shifting from manufacturing to services. But is this good or bad news? Evan travels to Dubai to explore how our service expertise has been successfully exported around the world and, back home, sees how British services make a fortune by attracting wealthy customers to the UK. Evan shows how architects, communication specialists, universities and even estate agents together contribute billions of pounds to the economy. But can we entirely rely on services to help us pay our way in the world? And what have been the social consequences of our great services experiment?

Alan Yentob visits Egypt’s National Museum, possibly the most precious museum in the world, with its dust-covered collection of thousands upon thousands of priceless ancient antiquities. The museum was caught up in the revolution on Cairo’s Tahrir Square, standing right at the centre of the action. Its precious cargo was looted, and young revolutionaries formed a cordon around it to protect it. The museum is the heart of Egypt, containing the key not just to the country’s past but to its future, offering inspiration and hope. Alan discovers that the pharaohs were not the slave-drivers of Hollywood legend, and that 4,000 years ago there was another revolution, foreshadowing today’s, and even a goddess of social justice.

Viewers are transported to the Sub-Antarctic as the SEDNA IV sails across the Polar Front, an area where cold turbulent Antarctic waters meet warmer water from the north. This area represents one of the earth’s last great refuges for wildlife, with tens of millions of birds, fur seals and elephant seals returning each spring to breed after a winter at sea. The exceptional wealth of the Southern Ocean has always provided for amazing populations of unique species, but for how much longer?

A revelatory look at the often subtle and unexpected impacts of our changing climate. Antarctica is still very much a mythical continent—a place that we have known for less than 200 years. Understanding the mechanisms that led to the slow break-up of ancient ice shelves takes both ingenuity and a huge icebreaker, but the changes underway here are not only written in the ice. Antarctica’s inhabitants are telling us that their world is changing in complex and subtle ways. The once successful colonies of diminutive Adelie penguins, on the Antarctic Peninsula just south of the Antarctic Circle, have shrunk by 80 per cent. Although it seems ridiculous, their decline is due in large part to increased snowfall—one of the unexpected consequences of a warmer climate.

Beneath SEDNA’s hull lies a cold and mysterious world that is home to some of the toughest and most unusual creatures on the planet: giant ribbon worms, dragon fish, and ancient sponges. For millions of years, these fantastical creatures have enjoyed a stable world, but now that is changing as the seawater starts to warm. This episode shares the team’s incredible adventure underwater and follows them as they endure the long, dark austral winter living onboard SEDNA IV. And unfortunately, they discover the hard way that a warmer winter does not necessarily make their work any easier. A harbinger of our changing world, Antarctica is sending us all an alarming message.

Viewers will meet a daring, close-knit Canadian crew aboard the SEDNA IV, who set out to observe climate change and its consequences up close in the icy grip of Antarctica. This episode follows the crew as they embark on this spectacular adventure. Taking his lead from some of the world’s greatest explorers, mission leader Jean Lemire and his crew endured 17 months on the expedition to measure the threat posed by global warming in the Antarctic—a place where the Earth is particularly vulnerable.

Series going inside the multi-billion-dollar global perfume industry, following the stories of perfumers, scientists and marketing gurus on their quest to win over the next generation of consumers

Today, all perfumers face the same challenge: how to make their fragrance stand out in a market crowded with product. We spend a year with two very different perfume houses as they attempt to win over the next generation of consumer.

In Paris, the ancient house of Guerlain looks outside the family for the first time for its next perfumer-in-chief. But Thierry Wasser has to tread carefully

  • adapting the iconic fragrance Shalimar for the 21st century without upsetting the old guard. When esteemed head of the family Jean-Paul Guerlain lands himself in hot water with a racist remark, the slow transfer of power is dramatically accelerated.

Meanwhile at Estee Lauder in New York, executives are devising a mass-market fragrance for designer Tommy Hilfiger. Getting the concept and packaging right is as important as important as the smell. But will buyers get this liquid rendition of rock and roll?

Perfumers are molecular chemists and sensual creatives who seek to trigger pleasurable memories and associations through our most primitive sense. We follow three different types of perfumer - or nose - to find out how they do it and what it takes to become one.

Jean Claude Ellena is in-house nose at French brand Hermes. We spend time with him in his studio in the woods, musing, sniffing and then creating a fragrance inspired by a secret garden. American Christopher Brosius is the Proust of perfume, a punk star with a mission to create scents that that can speak to us of times past - whether through the smell of tomato leaves or musty books. Jean Guichard is the principal of the Parisian school for noses. There are more astronauts than there are perfumers - so how does he spot the right stuff in students who may not be aware they have it?

The fragrance industry used to cater for the tastes of London, Paris and New York, but times are changing. New economies are the future, but what we like in a smell changes with time and location, and perfumers have to a lot of homework to do.

The fastest-growing market of all is Brazil, where citizens are obsessed with everything fragranced. We’re with perfumers as they peer into bathroom cabinets to monitor minute shifts in taste, and with an American scent guru who has to get up the noses of Latin adolescents in order to define the smell of the next version of a bodyspray.

An ancient English perfume house remakes Oriental fragrances that amused Queen Victoria. The tastes of modern Britain have moved on, but in the Gulf States they like these hot and heavy scents and we follow them as they as they try to make it big in Bahrain.

Icelandic film which tells the story of Britain and Iceland’s struggle over the once-plentiful cod fishing grounds in the North Atlantic from both sides.

During the 1950s and 1960’s Britain consumed 430,000 tons of cod each year, but as the stocks started to diminish the livelihoods of fishing communities in both countries were at stake. Iceland took steps to protect their fishing industry - the mainstay of their economy - resulting in the three so-called Cod Wars. This was a David and Goliath struggle, where the small fleet of Icelandic gunboats were pitted against the British trawlers and the Royal Navy.

The Santana Story: Angels and Demons Carlos Santana, the legendary Mexican- American guitarist and songwriter, reveals his turbulent life story with astonishing intimacy, accompanied by previously unseen archive performances of many of his best-known tunes. These range from Evil Ways and Black Magic Woman to the massive hits from his later Supernatural album. Santana recounts to director Jeremy Marre the abuse and struggle of his early years, the invention of Latin rock in San Francisco, his triumph at Woodstock, his involvement with jealous guru Sri Chinmoy and guitarist John McLaughlin, and the rollercoaster years that followed. This frank and very personal depiction of a remarkable forty-year career, fuelled by his ‘angels and demons’, is illustrated with behind-the-scenes footage uncovered for the first time, interviews with former members of the band, producers and musicians, and many performances from the early 70s that depict his unmistakable guitar style. Contributors include members of the Santana band, music industry executive Clive Davis, producer David Rubinson, guitarist John McLaughlin, Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, Santana family members and other musical collaborators.
