The Classic Motorist’s Way

David Heathcote uses two of the earliest Shell Guides to explore modern-day Britain. The 1930s Shell Guide to Dorset was compiled by Paul Nash, a leading contemporary war artist, while the Guide to Cornwall was edited by the young, ambitious John Betjeman. As he travels, Heathcote explores themes of development which the Guides raise. Betjeman declared that traffic had spoilt everything by the 1960s, but Heathcote discovers a more optimistic view of the changes in Cornwall.

Jeremy is with the Wolfhound crew as they take part in an evacuation exercise at the Defence School of Transport in Leconfield, East Yorkshire. He also finds out how raw recruits such as Private Connie Johnson are getting on.

Eagles Challenge

The commanding officer of the squadron, Major John McBride, is due to leave Leconfield but he still manages to find the time to supervise the trainees as they take part in the monthly in-house competition called Eagles Challenge. Jeremy gets the chance to ride a quad bike and finds out how they are used on the front line for supplying ammunition and evacuating the hurt.

Meet the Husky

Jeremy gets the chance to get behind the wheel of tactical support vehicle the Husky. The trainees are tested for drugs. Stephen Shine recremebers the day he was badly injured by a roadside bomb whilst serving in Iraq.

The Day of the Jackal

The trainees start their final stages of the training and find out how to use the vehicles in combat situations. Jeremy gets the chance to get behind the wheel of a Jackal.

Remembrance Day

Jeremy gets the chance to join one of the specialist instructors at Leconfield to learn how to drive on a skidpan. He also gets the chance to drive a 26-tonne Oshkosh. He meets with trainees as the come to the end of their courses.
