Food, water, and shelter are all necessary to man’s survival. But there’s another powerful need that has transformed history, silently steering us at every turn… sex. HOW SEX CHANGED THE WORLD spans thousands of years and sheds light on how sex has changed history: from Genghis Khan using it to expand the Mongol Empire to the Roman Catholic Church profiting from prostitution and even how Hoover used it to blackmail top level politicians.

From America’s earliest days, sex has shaped and defined our country. From the Puritan “mandatory sex” rule for married couples to Ben Franklin’s racy newspapers and even car design, these are the stories behind America’s sex pioneers.

The world’s oldest profession turns up in the places you’d least expect it: as a major source of revenue for the Catholic Church and the driving force behind America’s first racially integrated neighborhood.

From Ancient Rome to Washington DC and everywhere in-between, discover how the world changes when powerful people shamelessly shatter boundaries and break rules. In this episode, a Roman empress turns to prostitution for fun.

Sex is powerful force of nature and for some; it’s like the end of world. These are the unbelievably true stories behind what happens when people treat sex like doomsday.

These are the surprisingly true stories about how the sex lives of the powerful have shaken up history: from Warren G. Harding’s days as a playboy, to one women’s time in a prince’s modern day harem, to Rasputin’s legendary status as a ladies man.

Throughout history, there have been fearless men and women who have risked everything to reveal the mysteries behind our favorite subject: sex.

Nothing unleashes sex like war–after all, if you were going to die tomorrow, what would you want to do tonight? From Ancient Roman battalions to seductive spies to how soldiers spent their down time in the Civil War.

These unbelievably true stories reveal what happens when people take sex to the extreme: from Emperor Nero’s now famous sex parties to Teddy Roosevelt’s crusades against sex-ridden New York City.

Sex is one of the most powerful human needs and many people have tried to harness its power for their own gain. But those attempts often backfire.

These are the surprising stories behind how scientists, the government and even the judicial system have harnessed sex to change world history: from covert experimental CIA orgies to the Middle Ages’ “honest woman” test to verify bedroom activity.

MIRACLE RISING®: SOUTH AFRICA is the epic legacy of South Africa’s political transformation that culminated in the first free and fair elections in April 1994. Narrated through personal and intimate accounts from world leaders, politicians, celebrities and journalists, this thought-provoking documentary reflects on South Africa’s very own ‘Miracle’ – the inspiring story of a journey from apartheid to democracy.

MIRACLE RISING®: SOUTH AFRICA is a moving testament to the choices of people, both ordinary and iconic, where the human capacity to find compassion enabled a nation to avoid civil war and reach forgiveness for the greater good. From Nelson Mandela’s decision to learn Afrikaans while in prison, to the amnesty hearings of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission, it explores the difficult decisions that were taken enabling enemies to achieve peace. From the evil legacy of apartheid, to the triumphant first democratic elections, the documentary moves beyond mere chronology, into the hearts and minds of the leaders and people of South Africa, culminating in the electrifying behind- the-scenes events of the elections.

Offering valuable lessons in peace-making, MIRACLE RISING®: SOUTH AFRICA focuses on the visionary leadership and negotiations that brought about transition of the nationalist regime to a system of one-person, one-vote. Told through simple, intimate portraits of key players, it weaves an epic story of a nation into an intimate history of men and women determined to change the country for the best for all who live there.

He fired cannon on his own countrymen, wooed the mistress of a formidable opponent and even threatened the Pope. He was Napoleon, one of the most brilliant and complex figures in history. This absorbing appraisal of his life offers a new perspective of the little man from Corsica, who rose to new heights of power by seizing every brutal, outrageous opportunity in his path.In 1804, Napoleon Bonaparte, a native of Corsica, crowned himself emperor of France, an audacious gesture that illustrated his overweening pride and ruthless ambition. Despite his diminutive stature, “the little corporal” loomed large over much of Europe for two decades-as an adroit statesman, military strategist and ruthless conqueror. This sweeping documentary reveals the private tribulations as well as the public triumphs of a complex historical legend. From the glory of his empire to his defeat at Waterloo and miserable exile on Elba, here is an entertaining and complete portrait of an extraordinary life.

From his birth in the Corsican capital of Ajaccio in August 1769, Napoleon Bonaparte seems to have been earmarked for greatness. There was little during his early years to suggest as much however, for he came from an ordinary if well-to-do family and had a difficult schooling in France. But joining the military was the making of him and he soon discovered a remarkable gift for impressing influential people. This episode covers the all-important early years of Napoleon’s life up to his capture of Toulon in 1793 and the infamous ‘whiff of grapeshot’, when he fired upon and killed over 200 rebellious French citizens to protect the Government.

Marriage to Josephine de Beauharnais did little to quell Napoleon’s vaulting ambition. Now he had the opportunity to display his burgeoning military talents, which he showed to full effect during his stunning first Italian campaign. It saw Napoleon win the respect of his officers and gain the love of his men merely by ensuring that, for the first time in years, they were paid properly. After his triumphant return to Paris in 1797, Napoleon was already planning his invasion of Europe. This episode covers all these events plus the invasion of Egypt and the battle of the Pyramids, ending with Napoleon’s rise to First Consul in 1799.

By the year 1800, Napoleon’s political career was in full swing but as First Consul he was hardly a man of the people - by a stroke of outrageous good fortune he even survived an assassination attempt on Christmas Eve 1800. This gave him the perfect excuse to eliminate several political enemies and tighten his grip on a tumultuous nation. This episode covers Napoleon’s golden era; his rise to Emperor in 1804 and his remarkable military victories at Austerlitz, Eylau and Ulm. By 1808 the Emperor of France was just a short step away from becoming the Emperor of Europe.

Up until 1807, Napoleon’s life and career had been an almost uninterrupted tale of success, but things were beginning to unravel. The Emperor’s determination to impose the ‘Continental System’ on the whole of Europe was the driving force behind the decision to invade Spain and Portugal, known to posterity as the Peninsular War. A further headache presented itself in the form of a revitalised and remodelled Austrian army, a force that was to inflict Napoleon’s first decisive defeat on the battlefield. Family matters both home and aboard were also starting to cause Napoleon some problems, as his fortunes slowly began to wane.

With the Peninsular War still raging, Napoleon made a fateful decision in 1812 when he turned his attentions east and the Grand Army began an invasion of Russia. Nothing could have prepared them for what lay ahead as they marched slowly towards Moscow. Little did they know that of the half a million men who crossed the Russian border, fewer than fifty thousand would ever see their homeland again. This episode tells the story of Napoleon’s greatest mistake his ill-fated Russian adventure that spelt the beginning of the end for the Emperor. The episode includes the story of the bloody Battle of Borodino and the appalling horrors of the French retreat from Moscow.

This is the final chapter of Napoleon Bonaparte’s extraordinary life. A chapter that begins with his enforced exile on the island of Elba. He busied himself building forts and bridges, winning the support of the local population and making plans for a return to France. When he did return, it was to an ecstatic welcome from his former troops and it was not long before he was reinstated as Emperor and at war once again. But there was to be no glorious ending to the tale. Instead it ended in spectacular and bloody failure in June 1815 on the famous battlefield of Waterloo. Napoleon’s old enemy the Duke of Wellington once again beat his forces and this time there was no way back. Napoleon died in exile on St. Helena just six years later, but the legend of his military genius had only just begun.

From prison and street gang marks to U.S. military tattoos, Marked unravels the meanings behind these secret symbols. Travel to some of the most menacing places in the world for an inside look at modern-day societies whose ultimate symbols of acceptance are tattoos earned through unique rites of passage. From outlaw bikers to hardcore prison gangs, HISTORY™ uncovers the culture and customs of these fringe societies, delving into the minds of its members as they explain what the mysterious ink decorating their bodies means on the streets, inside prisons and to them personally. Tattoo artists and cultural experts explain the technique and history behind these “marks” and the groups they adorn, putting the experiences of the main characters into perspective and detailing a world in which initiation rites, turf wars and the fierce pride of belonging to an outlaw family are all part of the territory. From prison and street gang marks to U.S. military tattoos, Marked unravels the meanings behind these secret symbols.

• This documentary series explores in depth the history of the tattoo worldwide.

In prison, tattoos represent self-identification and belonging. To those who have them, they represent the rejection of straight society and membership in the outlaw class. Marked goes deep into the culture of prison tattoos, discovering how these illegal marks are secretly created behind bars, and decoding the meaning of the strange symbols that cover many prisoners’ bodies. We explore the secrets behind the marks through the experiences of current and former prisoners, and examine the bloody ways that these initiation marks are earned.

For outlaw motorcycle gangs, tattoos prove dedication and mark alliances. The bikers who wear them live by their own set of rules. Marked goes inside the clubhouses of three of these underground organisations to examine how ink separates these riders from the pack. Witness rituals never before seen on television, as members get permanently branded with tattoos rife with dark, devilish iconography. The engines roar as we decode the hidden meanings of some of the most popular biker images and learn what it takes to live the rough and tumble biker lifestyle.

In Southern California, black and grey tattoos connect a culture that started in the barrios of Los Angeles in the 1940s and survives on today’s rough streets. Amid the sun and palm trees, ink marks territory and serves as a reminder of blood spilled on neighbourhood streets. Marked dives into the origins of this distinctive tattoo style, born in the violent, gang-saturated California prisons and refined on the streets of LA. Artist Freddy Negrete, one of the originators of the Chicano style, takes us on an exclusive journey, deep into this unknown world, where we decode the ink that decorates the bodies of current and former Chicano gang members.

In Russian prisons, tattoos tell all. From crimes committed to time served and even ranking within the strict hierarchy, these dark and detailed works of art are a secret language that contains all vital information and can mean the difference between power and subjugation. Marked goes deep inside the world of Russia’s infamous prisons, revealing how these illegal images are controlled by the ruthless Thieves in Law, the notorious gang that rules the prisons with an iron fist. We decode the mysteries and meanings behind the ink through the accounts of violent ex-cons and career criminals who reveal their terrifying deeds and the brutal conditions inside Russian prisons.

The warriors of the United States military use ink to symbolize their secret lives, lived on the edge. Coded symbols indicate membership in elite, highly trained units. Tattoos memorialize battles fought and friends lost. From the shores of France and the jungles of Vietnam, to the treacherous mountains of Afghanistan and dusty streets of Iraq, soldiers, sailors, and Marines have been willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for their country. In this episode of Marked, we explore the origins of military tattoos, from the ancient warriors of the Roman Empire to the Western sailors who brought ink to these shores. We hear from veterans and men currently serving, as they share their stories of combat and survival and decode the ink that decorates their bodies.

No criminal group in the world is more closely identified with tattoos than the largest: Japan’s Yakuza, 80,000 strong. In this episode of Marked, we go deep into Japan’s underground for an exclusive look at the stunning full body- suits of ink thatmark the skin of today’s yakuza. Hidden within the layers of spectacular imagery are secret codes that reach back far into Japan’s bloody samurai history: violent warriors, images of hell, prostitutes, and a range of predators from tigers to dragons. Wehear from yakuza as they share stories of their criminal pasts, the significance of their tattoos, and the pain they experienced in getting most of their bodies tattooed the old fashioned way: by getting poked over and over again with needles fastened tothe ends of sticks. Master tattoo artist and former yakuza boss Horizen guides us through the intricate process of creating a traditional Japanese tattoo, or tebori, from scratch, demystifying this ancient craft in which everything, from making the inkto sharpening the needles, is done by hand.
