[edit]Information

The Weimar Republic came to bear for many the humiliation of World War I and the blame for all its accompanying hardships. Despite a few years of stability, the Weimar Republic faced issues such as hyperinflation and the Great Depression, which drove many Germans into the arms of radical and extremist political parties and the rise of Adolf Hitler. Weimar is remembered not only for its economic and political chaos, but also for its explosive cultural outpourings: in film and theatre, in the galleries and in its enduring portrait of the world following the Great War. Established in 1918–19, in the wake of Germany's catastrophic defeat in the First World War and the revolution that followed swiftly on its heels, the Weimar Republic ushered in widespread social reform, a radical cultural flowering and the most democratic conditions the German people had ever known. At its beginning, Weimar held out the hope that democracy, stability and prosperity would take root in Germany, but it was beset by frequent changes of government, waves of economic upheaval and spasms of violence of increasing intensity between the forces of left and right. Agitation and assassination by rightwing nationalists – enraged by the severity of the Treaty of Versailles and the acceptance of its terms by liberal German politicians – formed a threatening descant to the conciliatory efforts of successive coalition governments. Ultimately, the instabilities of Weimar would lead to the appointment as German Chancellor of the Nazi Fuhrer Adolf Hitler, who created a one-party dictatorship that abandoned the rule of law, democracy and civil rights. In the words of Gustav Stresemann, Germany’s Nobel Peace Prize-winning Foreign Minister from 1923 to 1929, Weimar democracy was 'dancing on a volcano'. From this political uncertainty rose a demigod, an unexpected leader who promised to revive Germany to the powerful country it once was. Adolf Hitler converted democracy into a dictatorship, causing the fall of the Weimar Republic. Written & Directed by Danielle Winter ; EM Entertain Me Productions Ltd.

At first glance, the 1933 Dymaxion looks more like a blimp than a car, but it goes fast. The 1955 LaSalle Roadster and Sedan didn’t look like much of anything when they were found in the Warhoops junkyard.

A documentary exploring the causes of the 1929 Wall Street Crash.

Over six terrifying, desperate days in October 1929, shares crashed by a third on the New York Stock Exchange. More than $25 billion in individual wealth was lost. Later, three thousand banks failed, taking people's savings with them. Surviving eyewitnesses describe the biggest financial catastrophe in history.

In 1919, the US had emerged victorious and dominant from World War One. Britain and its European allies were exhausted financially from the war. In contrast, the US economy was thriving and the world danced to the American tune.

Easy credit and mass production set the tone in the roaring twenties for an era of consumption like none that had ever been seen before. The stock market rose and investors piled in, borrowing money to cash in on the bubble. In 1928, the market went up by 50 per cent in just 12 months. The crash was followed by a devastating worldwide depression that lasted until the Second World War. Shares did not regain their pre-crash values until 1954.

This is the story of a financial disaster that we hoped could never happen again.

Songshan Shaolin Temple, Henan Province in China, is the world-renowned home of the Shaolin school of kung fu and the birthplace of the Buddhist sect founded by Damo. As famous as it is, the true story of Shaolin Temple is virtually unknown, embellished by countless action movies and comic books over the years. Films, shows and publications that purported to reveal ¡°the real Shaolin martial arts¡± were created by students of the Shaolin discipline, not its monks. This movie brings the real tale of Shaolin to the outside world for the first time, told from the viewpoint of the monks who rule it. To make this documentary video, Gen Takahashi, the producer, concluded an official contract with Songshan Shaolin Temple, Henan Province¡ªthe only such contract ever signed. The film includes never-before-seen footage of Shaolin breathing exercises, one of the keys to this mysterious discipline; and some of the secret techniques of the Shaolin Martial Monks Troupe, the highest authority of the temple.

[edit]Information

From the makers of Walking With Dinosaurs comes an epic and entertaining new exploration of early life on Earth, revealing that before the age dinosaurs, a succession of fantastical animals and plants ruled the planet.

Using state of the art visual effects, Walking With Monsters recreates a time when a two-ton predatory fish came on land to hunt, when four-metre sea scorpions sliced sushi in the shallows and when just one species of lumbering reptile represented 80 per cent of all life. For the first time, this special two-hour presentation uncovers and recreates these creatures and the bizarre world they inhabited.

Drawing on the knowledge of more than 600 scientists, state-of-the-art technology and animation, this special spans more than five million years and brings to life the weird, wonderful and sometimes terrifying creatures that roamed before the dinosaurs with amazing realism.

Using real footage plus innovative morphing technology, this special goes inside the body of our monster ancestors for the first time to learn what creature gave humanity our very first limb, our heart and even our brain. Witness the struggle for the fittest as it has never been seen before - a war between animals more strange, savage and successful than any dinosaur that would follow.

[edit]Cambrian period

550 million years ago: With life still concentrated in the water, this was a time when predators began to evolve with the emergence of teeth, claws, hooks and other "weapons." A period marked by great variety, all manner of life swam, stalked and shuffled in the water, including the Trilobite which gave rise to crabs and insects, and the Pikaia from which everything with a back bone - sharks to man - can be traced back to.

[edit]Silurian period

Fast forward to the Silurian period, 410 million years ago, as creatures from the sea make the first forays onto land, including the scorpion - an evolutionary success story. In a world dominated by scorpions, our distant fishy ancestor, the Alaspis, was making the first journey from sea to lake to spawn.

[edit]Devonian period

Moving into the Devonian period 360 million years ago, the scorpions were overtaken by fish as top predators - some growing to 10-metres long. Some of these fantastical fish ventured onto land and found the environment so appealing that fins grew firm and digits developed at the end of these early limbs. This new creature was the Acanthostega, ancestor to all birds, reptiles and frogs.

[edit]Carboniferous period

Great forests took root and swamps dominated the Carboniferous period, 300 million years ago, giving rise to metre-long dragonflies and huge spiders with leg-spans of nearly a metre. But most deadly of all was the Arthropleura, an animal that looked like a three-metre long bug but moved like an anaconda.

[edit]Early Permian

After an ice age wiped out the swamps and the giant insects, new group of animals and plants took over during the Early Permian period, 280 million years ago. Reptiles resilient enough to cope with the dry, cold conditions would survive - and the king of these reptiles was the giant, sail-finned Dimetrodon.

[edit]Late Permian

Forty million years later, during the Late Permian period 240 million years ago, Earth had turned into a desert planet and precipitated the largest mass extinction ever.Only five per cent of life survived and the herbivorous, lumbering Lystrosaurus - a precursor to dinosaurs and the earliest ancestor of all mammals - represented much of our planet's animal life.

For the sixty-five million years folllowing, the bones of the last king of the dinosaurs lay hidden. Then, at the turn of the 20th Century, scientists began to coax the first fragments from the badlands of western North America.
