Much of the history of New York City can be told through its bridges. These bridges, spanning the city's rivers, changed destinies. They linked some to opportunity, others to ruin. In the age of iron and steel they were architectural masterpieces--designed by engineers, but beloved as works of art. New York county, better known as Manhattan Island, is connected to its neighbors by 18 bridges. Each bridge has a story to tell.
