On the Russian Front there were no rules; no code on honour; no decency or humanity. It was the largest and most brutal war in history, a barbaric struggle to the death. It contained the most immense tank battles ever fought and also recorded the most casualties, as whole armies were swallowed up by men, machines and Mother Nature. Enormous distances boggled the mind and the constantly changing seasons brought either mud and rain, heat and dust or ice and snow.
